La Resume 1979 Headland High School Vol. 27 __L J GOOD-BYE 1970's . . . This year's LaResume concentrates on the fads that made this school year unique. The photographs will depict the memorable year 1978-79, revealing these special occasions that are engraved in our memories. Even though HHS is considered a small school, our students always manage to keep up with the latest fashions and fads. T-shirts have become major components of the student wardrobe. Anything from campaign slogans to the names of record-artists can be stretched colorfully across T-shirt fronts. Hairstyles can change with the passing of each week. One style that seems to be the most popular is the crimped or permed hair. Boys, girls, and even teachers can go from straight to curly in a short period of time. The newest thing that has come to HHS is Disco. It has influenced our style of dress as well as our mode of dance. An old favorite that never seems to lose its popularity is Levi jeans. Even though Levi's have been around for some time they will continue to be a favorite among students. The movies Animal House and Grease also have made an impression on the HHS student body. Toga Party and Greased Lightenings have become part of the everyday conversation. The styles and fads of today are very important to us; without them every year would be the same. Although, the fads last only a short time, they will add the color to a remarkable memory-school days 1978-79. STUDENT GOVERNMENT The Student Government Association is an organization composed of students elected by a constituency of fellow students. Every student in the school has a voice in the student affairs through homeroom representatives. Since the first SGA was established in 1930, its goal has been to bring the SGA closer to the student body. Under the leadership of Charles Foster, President, and Mr. Clarance Peterman, Sponsor, we have moved closer to this goal than have any of the previous SGA groups. The officers are pictured at the right, and they are: left to right, Susanne Smith, Reporter; Bernestine Bradley, Secretary; Charles Foster, President; and Dathy May, Treasurer. 32 HONOR SOCIETY The National Honor Society is an organization composed of those students who possess the highest qualities of character, leadership, scholarship, and service. The Honor Society seeks to promote these qualities in its own members as well as in all of the students of H.H.S. This year the Honor Society has been involved in such projects as sponsoring a spelling bee and a tutoring service, putting up the school's Christmas tree as well as honoring those students who made the A honor roll. Officers are: Kevin Shelley, President; Lisa Jones, Vice President; Jan Hancock, Secretary; and Charles Foster, Reporter. 33 KEY CLUB OFFICERS: Seated left to right: Joel McCloud, Secretary; Lynda Lee Shelley, Sweetheart; Tom Brannon, Vice President; Kevin Shelley, President. Kneeling left to right: Jeff Adams, Treasurer; Mitch Rowland, Reporter; and Sammy Jones, Sergeant-at-Arms. 34 FRENCH CLUB The Headland High School French Club exists to encourage practical application of classroom experiences in French and to acquaint members with French history, geography, culture, and customs. Held monthly, the meetings often feature an introduction to popular French foods, a visiting speaker who has toured France, or an opportunity to sing in French. The officers pictured at the left are: (left to right) Elizabeth Johnson, Vice President; Jack Parsons, President; Sylvia McDaniel, Secretary Treasurer; and Babbie Lingo, Historian. It was a typical wild and wonderful year. The staff stayed quite busy with layouts, pictures, ad sales, yearbook sales, and deadlines that we always met one way or another. Though the staff is busy (most of the time), there is always time for fun. Playing spades until forbidden to do so, barricading the door against intruders, practicing cheers, and reading historical novels. All these things add up to a great annual?!!! The Naval Junior Reserve Officers Training Corps is an integral part of the curriculum in Headland High School. NJROTC cadets engage in exciting and challenging courses with a principle goal of developing citizenship, leadership, teamwork, and high standards of personal conduct and appearance. The program strongly stresses self-development. 38 Commander William F. Cole The NJROTC unit of HHS participates in numerous extra curricular activities. We have an organized drill team and rifle team that demonstrate skilled perfection in marching and rifle maneuvers. They also perform in pre-game shows of home football games and attend parades in the surrounding area. Some very interesting field trips were made by ROTC cadets this school term. They included orientation trips to: Ft. Rucker, Pensacola Navy Base, and Tyndall Air Force Base. It will hold a place of fond memories in the minds of many beautiful young ladies. The event was truly a highpoint of their school year. The chosen beauty from the Senior Class was Jill Fain, and from the Junior Class, Jennifer Bond. The Sophomore beauty is Clara Mims and the Freshmen beauty is Angerine Pope. Kellie McGriff was crowned as the top yearbook beauty. TOP BEAUTIES CHOSEN 52 IN MISS LA RESUME HOMECOMING 1978-79 Homecoming Day brought on a whole week of excitement. For four days the entire student body worked hard in order to make that particular day perfect. We found the football team sweating through practices, preparing themselves for one of the most important games, which they won decisively by a score of 56-16 over Daleville. The Varsity Cheerleaders planned activities for homecoming in order to bring about more spirit in everyone. Thursday night was the Snake Walk and the Bonfire Pep Rally, where the Queen was announced. Stephanie Murphy was crowned the 1978-79 Homecoming Queen. Her court consisted of the Senior attendants, Rita Fain, Robbie Cox, and Diane Rich; the Junior attendants, Denise Marr and Shannon May; the Sophomore attendants, Linda Whiddon and Janet McCloud; and the Freshmen attendents, Alicia Enfinger and Marcia Thornton. Homecoming came to an end with a big dance, where we continued to show spirit. 58 59 MR. IT WAS THE BEST OF TIMES; IT WAS THE WORST OF TIMES Being a Senior includes good times as well as bad Without them, every Senior year would be like the one before. There are many special things that make this year, 1978-79, OUR Senior year. Being the most spirited class at Headland High has aided us in the winning of the majority of the pep rallies. Showing our true spirit at Homecoming, we overwhelmed the judges with our creatively decorated Hall. Remnants of these decorations are still visible in our Hall. We participated in all sports, supporting our teams either actively or supportively Even though our hopes of going to State in football our last year fell through, we still showed pride in our teams and appreciated their efforts. We showed them just how much they mean to us by working dilligently on the Ram Country scene on the locker room and the Brick Wall scene in the gym. We hope that these things will always reflect the spirit of our class and show how much HHS really means to us. 123 LORA CHARLENE ADAMS Transfer from 71st High, Fayetteville, NC where Library Club II; AFJROTC III; FBLA IV SUZANNE ARMSTRONG SAFE III, IV; Honor Society III, IV; Annual Staff II, III; Top Twenty Senior; Who's Who IV; Miss HHS FBLA I, II, III, Officer III THERSA ARNETT WILLIAM WESTLEY BLOCKER III SGA II; SAFE III, IV, Mr. SAFE IV. I have mixed feelings about it, though. I feel an indescribable relief at being free from the responsibility that comes with being Editor of the La Resume. Vet, it's sad, because in working with the staff, I've had some of the best experiences of my life. The staff members have become very important to me, and they have taught me more than I could have ever learned through books alone. The production of the yearbook would be impossible without the help of fifteen very special people. I want to express my sincere thanks to the Seniors, Debbie, Mila and Jill, for giving their time, advice and support. Thanks also to Pam, Jack, Libbye, and Alicia for the willingness to work. The Sophomores, Linda, Sandy, Tina, and Jena, have aided me immeasurably with their dedication and sense of humor. To Ginger, Lydia, and Jennifer, thank you for your eagerness to learn and for showing such bright promise for the future. Special thanks goes to Dr. and Mrs. Roland Bridges, Mr. and Mrs. Norman Holman and Mr. and Mrs. Lig Solomon for the use of their beautiful homes. As you can see, the 1979 La Resume is a product of many minds. We have tried to compile the events of the year and the people that made them happen. Hopefully, we have been successful in relaying something of the spirit of Headland High. Only you, our fellow students, can judge how well we have succeeded. SAMMY Why did you go and leave us; You've gone so far away. Why cpuldn't you just stay awhile, Just a few more days. You took with you all but memories, And left us all in tears. Nothing to help cover up, All these terrible fears. But we're thankful for the time, That you were here. Because to everyone's heart, You became so very dear. So as you sit up above, Please remember this That we all love you dearly And you Sammy, we will forever miss. Written by J. Taylor in memory of Sammy Peacock on behalf of the student body of HHS.
