La Resume Headland High School Volume 22 Headland, Alabama ------------------------ Table of Contents Opening Thoughts...........................4 Activities................................30 Organizations.............................62 Feature...................................78 People....................................98 Advertisements...........................144 Epilogue.................................184 - ---------------------------■-------------- It was the best of times... The times? You know we had some times! Everything was exciting, everything was so much fun! Be it a football game, basketball game, dance, party, or just being together, we always made it special. We always had each other to laugh with, party with, and love. You have to make the good times yourself - take the little times and make them into big times. The times? Oh, we had some times! It was the worst of times. . . Now, pause to take a deeper look, but at a slower pace this time. Remember here the gent- ler moments, thrills and spills, heartache and sorrow. Many things in life seem so unfair. It makes us ask why,” and it's easy to become bitter. Then we realize there are things in life that we as youth have not yet learned to accept. But it's nice sometimes to open up the heart a little and let some hurt come in. It proves we're still alive. 6 It was the age of wisdom. . . Thank goodness for people who dare to make risks, for it is at their expense that we learn. It's only when we pause to wonder that we go beyond the limits of our little lives.” It the age of foolishness • • • Ah! Remember when we could just lose ourselves for a few moments and simply be whatever our spirit demanded. Not every- thing we did needed an explana- tion ! No, not a one of our silly, frivolous, inational adventures. Our follies were the result of act- ing on impulse . . . And we wouldn't trade them for any- thing! 10 the season of light. . This was a time of gaiety, mer- riment, and liveliness, as seen through the clear, fresh eyes of our youth. Our optimism was carried over into everything that touched our lives. The lighth- earted atmosphere in these brick walls set a mood of high spirits and bright days. Yes, this was a season for devotion, enchant- ment, infatution, yearning, and tender passion. the season of darkness No, not all of oui days were light. At times it seemed the darkness would obliterate the light forever. We could sense the settled peace-like silence as darkness shrouded our world. Bit- terness, discontent, misery, heartache, and woe walked the halls with us and threatened us with chronic cases of the blues. Oh, they were dark days, indeed! ■ b ft C V QUvp b ♦LA SMITH INSURANCE It the epoch of belief. . . This was a time for belief in our fellow students. We became as one, taking for granted our unity - searching, wishing, praying, understanding - and never doub- ting our ability to make the world a better place. 18 It was the epoch of incredulity. . . One sweep from the hand of Fate and our world was shattered. Such a blow to the calm, sheltered life of the residents of Headland usurped our security and bade us bend our knees to God in thanks for the sparing of our lives in the tornado of December 29,1973. It was the spring of hope. . . Along with spring came that ever-flowing surge of hope and untried faith which accompanies the season. For an exchange student like Cassio Crespo (left), a hope came true when he left Brazil to attend Headland High on an exchange program. To an underclassman, hope and a dream are one and the same. But to a senior, hope is . . . everything. 21 It was the winter of despair We've seen so many winters come and watched so many old years go and held so many hands . . . we never really got to know ...” 23 25 26 We had nothing before us. . rs $ Sometimes we actually felt there was nothing in the world except for these brick walls, and our only possession was a schedule and a locker. How wrong we were! If only we would take the time to stop and consider the countless possibilities of our future, we would STOP saying, Listen, I am what I am, and START saying, Listen, lam going to BE!! In short, the period was. . . 28 61 , juasajd am ayji ACTIVITIES Pam Flowers Crowned 32 1st Alternate Zelda Hardy Pam Flowers was crowned Miss Headland on August 23, 1973, after several weeks of preparation. The Blue Cavaliers under the field direction of Karen Shelley, left, truly lived up to their slogan!! GO BAND! ! ! Majorettes One, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight - a majorette's vocabu- lary. With the wisdom of head majorette Lynne Phillips, the major- ettes proved how good they could be. It takes a lot of hard work and practice in order to make a good majorette, and as anyone can see, that is exactly what we have!!! 40 Color and Honor Guard The H. H. S. band acquired a unique addition in 1973, the color and honor guard. Through many weeks of difficult and pain-taking practice, they became well respected and admired. Color guard captain is Lisa Kirkland. Honor guard cap- tain is Jane Bowen. 41 Football 1973 LEFT TO RIGHT: (1st row) R. Feggins, J. Nelson, G. Norton, R. Nelson, T. Pierce, C. Johnson, T. Smith, M. Watson HEAD COACH: FRED LEWIS ASSISTANT COACHES: STEVE WILLIAMS, FREDDIE BRANNON, WINSTON GRIGGS 42 To play a game like football requires much more than the ability; it demands time, prac- tice, sweat, dedication, and determination. For the players, it began in July - hot, humid July - the sprints, the push-ups, the scrimmage games . . . For the fans, it began in Sep- tember . Our season was marked with explosive spirit led by an enthusiastic and loyal student body. 43 Losing came a lot more often than we would like to have seen it; however, everyone stayed together till the very end. That pat on the back, courtesy to offi- cials and visiting schools some- times strained our pride. Most of all, the ability to hold our heads high even when we left the sta- dium with a big loss did not come easily. But it did come!! 44 45 Jr. Team Football Jr. Team Cheerleaders 46 Homecoming 1973 A fun-filled week was the prelude to a very special day here at Headland High School. There were activities for every day - color day, spirit day, the ghost walk, floats to build, and every- body's favorite '50's day! On Thursday night was the snake- walk and bonfire and pep rally. Here the announcement was made that the 1973 Homecoming Queens were Zelda Hardy and Renee Davenport. 47 49 1973-74 Varsity Cheerleaders 50 The inexhaustible spirit of Headland High School was led by the 1973-74 cheerleader squad, with Shelia Sowell as head cheer- leader and Martha Ellen Medley as the co-head. The school term beginning in September began in July for the cheerleaders with a trip to ICF's cheerleading clinic at Auburn University (pictures at right). With all of the evaluations, prac- tices, pulled muscles, achy bodies, and shin-splints, the cheerleaders made a lot of memories. But more important, they brought back new ideas, new cheers, and new chants to the stu- dent body. Planning pep rallies, sweating through practices, painting signs, planning activities for homecoming, preparing uniforms and so much more fills the hours of a cheerleader - and they love every minute of it! 51 Varsity Basketball A year of vivid expectations, the ecstasy of victory, the harsh reality of defeat, prac- tice, Move the Ball! , You stupid referee!!! All this and so much more molded our 1973-1974 basket- ball season. Under the leader- ship of Coach Steve Williams and an outstanding effort by the players, the season ended with our heads high - proud to say we were from Headland! 52 54 55 Jr. Team Basketball The 1973-74 season marked one of the best in the history of Headland High School. But then, they don’t have to, because everyone on the 1973-74 La Resume staff has worked out of individual concern. The hours of work, the bone-tiredness, the disap- pointments, the despair, and the worry, the struggle to break even financially, the writing and re-writing and re-writing of copy all are worth the effort. We are proud and pleased and filled with a sense of accomplishment. We’ve created a worth-while legacy of the past year for the here-and-now and for the future. 183 Epilogue Accept me for What lam What I have been What I will be. Give of yourself To you Tome To others. Learn from the past Live in the present Delve in the future. Love with respect Hate with apathy Not with vengeance. Believe in yourself In me In others in GOD. Autographs
