HINKLE QDeceased April 13, 19603 DR HENRY PATERSON JR s Prmclpal George Shanno greeting new Supermtendent of School Dr Henry Paterson Jr 10 1 7? r f X n en e, G jg DR HENRYF PATERSON JR Dr Henry F Paterson Jr a native of Quincy Massachusetts was unan lmously elected Superintendent of the Hazleton Cltv School District by the Hazleton Clty School Board December 7 1959 to succeed Thomas L Hlnkle retired December 31 1959 Dr Paterson formerly was a supervising principal in the Qumcy Public Schools The new superintendent received his early education ln his home city H secured a Bachelor of Science degree at Bridgewater Teachers College and his Master s degree from Columbia and Boston UHlV6TS1lLl9S In 19.57 Dr Paterson was awarded a Doctor of Education degree from Boston University taught English and history He also acted as J umor High School basketball coach and varsity track coach Inducted into the U S Army ln 1941 he served five years in the armed forces part of which was spent in the European Theatre Operations where he held the position of Headquarters Commandant He was honorably dlscharged from the servlce in 1946 holding the rank of major in the U S Army Infantry Dr Paterson IS a member of the Kiwanis Club and American Legion Post He IS affiliated with the Hazleton Teachers Association PSEA NEA and Phi Delta Kappa a professional fraternity for men ln education He IS married to Jean Schatz a former Hazleton resident and teacher They have a daughter Denise The Janus Staff extends a hearty welcome to Dr Paterson and his famlly We hope he enjoys many years as superintendent of our school system 11 l a . 7 ' . . . . . . . . e His teaching experience began at North Quincy High School where he School Baan! This year, as in previous years, the Mountaineer, the newspaper published monthly at H.H.S., has carried out its tradition of bringing the school news to the students. Of great interest to the students are its four pages of editorials, columns, features, humor, and news about 'the club activities, the sporting events, and the various other news- worthy items. Each year members of the staff attend the Penn State Journalism Clinic to learn how to publish a better and more informative and entertaining newspaper. Selecting the Athlete of the Year is one of its annual features. Participation in at least one of the school's various sports makes a senior boy eligible for this award. Name the Newsboy contest was a new addition to its activities this year. Being a member of the Columbia School Press Association, the Mountaineer is eval- uated on a national level with other high school and college newspapers. Under the supervision of Miss Ruth Bergstresser, adviser, and Mr. Leonard Deitch, business manager, the well-qualified staff of editors and reporters produce the newspaper. The winter semi-spring dance, and hayrides highlight some of the social events, a drive to raise funds for muscular dystrophy is one of the civic functions. This club gives all girls at H .H.S. an opportunity to meet new people by attend- ing either a winter or a summer conference. Many fun-filled evenings are spent at Cadettes. . Student Council, the advisory government body of Hazleton High School, was responsible for conducting many activities of the school. To start the year's program, the council held a two day sophomore orientation, during which new students be- came acquainted with the layout of the school. Student Council was aided by five committees. The Social Activities Commit- tee carried on the dances, such as the Sophomore Welcome Dance, the Pre-Thanks- giving Day dance, the Senior Day dance, and the Senior Prom. To brighten up the winter noontimes, this committee als held noontime canteen. The Projects Com- mittee made posters for athletic even3s and dances. The Constitution and By-Laws Committee was responsible for deciding upon the rules for council and for making amendments to the constitution. The Nominating and Contact Committee pre- sented slates of candidates for various offices. This committee was responsible for informing the homerooms of the council's meetings. The Publicity Committee publicized all the activities carried on by Council. The capable directors of Student Council this year were Mr. Lawrence Evan- gelista and Mr. Francis Kender. 4 Front Row-L. Benjamin. The Advanced Chorus, under the direction of Mr. Burton E. Hall, added their special touch to many of our school activities. They began their year of successes by presenting the first assembly program. The chorus again exhibited their ability when they participated in the annual Christmas program. Five senior members of the choruswere honored by being selected to attend Regional Chorus, which was held in Kingston. The five who participated were: Lorraine D'Angelo, Judy Gavert, Dick Probert, George Meiss, and Charles Parsons. On February 24th, the Advanced Chorus entertained for the Hazleton Rotary Club. The program was recorded and replayed for the general public to hear on Sunday, February 28. They complete assignments on such lessons as parts of a book, the card catalog, and the classification of books. The Katherine Helen Longshore Future Teachers of America Club of the Hazleton Senior High School was chartered by the National Education Association April 9, 1957 as F.T.A. Club 283. The purpose of this club is to recruit the finest type of young people for the teaching profession by enabling high school students to explore the field of education by means of a club program. This year the F.T.A. gave a smorgasbord dinner at the Altamont honoring teachers newly elected to the Hazleton Senior High School. Education Week was observed by an Apple Day honoring teachers with apples. A Christmas project was carried out for the United Charities' children when the F.T.A. gave them gifts and a party at the Home. Special slides were prepared by the F.T.A. Club and sent to the P.S.E.A. to be part of a P.F.T.A. film strip to recruit F.T.A. members throughout the United States. Observation in grade schools was supervised by a grade-school principal in the spring. Regional and state conventions were at- tended by our F.T.A. members. The first meeting included a lecture on Claude Debussy, composer of such works as Afternoon of a Faun, and Claire de Lune. DER DEUTSCHE VEREIN CGERMAN CLUBJ The purpose of the German Club is to enrich the study of the language, people, and customs, of the country of Germany. Through these studies, the members of the club hope to improve this understanding of and relations with people from an- other country. Regular meetings are held, during which everyone participates in songs, reports, games, quiz programs, and writing letters to German pen pals. Dietrich. This course is composed of Seniors. In the morning these students attend school and are instructed in methods of salesmanship. They are taught world eco- nomics, market merchandise, sales etiquette, and how to meet and deal with different types of customers. In the afternoon the Distributive Education students report to their respective jobs. There they put their instructions into active use., These students are guar- enteed their jobs following graduation. At the end of each year two awards are presented. The two categories are non- selling and selling. A committee of local merchants selects the winners with three things in mindg academic achievement, general knowledge, and all-around leadership. This organization, under Miss Elsie Hochella's capable super- vision deserves and has received the support and commendatlon of the student body. Some services rendered by our band are playing the fight songs, providing half-time shows with the majorettes and flagtwirlers, and aiding the cheerleader in arousing school spirit. Their hard work and effort have also brought them recogni- tion throughout the community, such as their winning a second place award in the Mummers Parade. Our 1959-1960 jazz band has had another successful year. As in the past they gave performances at the Welcome Sophomore Dance, the Pre-Thanksgiving Day Dance, and the Senior Day Dance. Under Bobby Snyder's capable supervision these fine musicians appear at most Thespian productions and often entertain at Cadette meetings. The squad, pushed i'nto the dirt in its season's opener, later roared back to capture the Southern division title of the Eastern Conference. The Mountain- eers' never-say-die attitude gained them the respect of everyone they encountered. It was a campaign of numerous satisfactionseupsetting Old Forge, steamrolling Berwick, jolting Shamokin, and completely swarnping the Wildcats from West Hazleton. Everyone who saw these games knows that our boys put forth their best effort, and only the coaches and players themselves know the grueling hours it required to achieve such per- fection. Another thing that undoubtedly aided our team was the fine spirit shown by the student body throughout the season. As the final tally shows, the team really gave them something to cheer about. The Mountaineer squad this year exhibited great teamwork. The forward wall was spearheaded by boys like Bob Koch, Mike Esposito, and Jim Winters. The backfield was likewise sparked by Frank Hill, Dale Stewart, Gene Kapes, and Dan Golden. Congratulations to Coach Serany and his mighty Mountaineer team members who were the pride 'of Hazleton and the entire Anthracite region this season. Enroute to a 24-3 season and the East Penn League Championship the boys from Hazleton displayed some of the finest basketball seen in this region for a long time. Also, the Mounts captured the District 11 playoff games from Lansford and Mahoney Area before bowing out to Catasaqua in a closely contended battle for the District Championship. Most sports fans agree that the Hazleton-Mahanoy Area game was one of the finest high school games ever played in this region. The 1960 edition of H.H.S. cagers further imprinted their names in the books by setting a new record for total points scored in a season. Charlie Unger set a new free throw accuracy record and was named to the All State third team, while Dale Stewart attained the honorable mention list. Likewise Unger, Stewart, Piehota, were named to the first team in the East Penn Conference. For these boys and the entire team the years of hard work really brought dividends. Thanks again from the class of 1960 for a thrilling basketball season. We haven't yet heard the last from these boys who have displayed such spirit and ability this year. Congratulations to Coach Charlie Murrin's Junior Varsity team on the completion of a highly successful season. The high-caliber basketball displayed by the Jay Vees promises another fine team to represent H.H.S. next year. Stellar backcourt play was shown throughout the year by Joe Greco, Billy Nance, and Russ Wagner. Likewise, Tom Pugliese, Denny Koslowski, and Bruce Carcia performed exceptionally well under the boards. Undoubtedly, the high point of the year for the Jay Vees came when they defeated the previously unbeaten Bethlehem team at the H.H.S. court. These boys, together with Frank Zack, will form the nucleus of next year's Varsity. With the fine fighting spirit displayed by these boys this year, H.H.S. can't miss having another highly successful season next year. Since Jay Vee ball provides an opportunity for sophomores and juniors to learn the tricks of the trade, it is an essential part of any high school basketball program. Unaware that it would be his last season at H.H.S., Coach Ed Brominski turned in a terrific finale by coaching last year's Mountaineers to the Hughie McGeehan League Championship and to district playoffs where the Mounts finally stumbled. With the arrival of a new coach, Mr. Francis Kender, and a new season, only one thing remains primarily unchanged-our championship team. Our returning lettermen, too numerous to mention here, combined with competent coaching all but insure us of a fine season. Spearheaded by a group of senior boys, the team posted a T - 1 record which, when added to last year's 10 - 1 mark, comprises the finest two seasons in Hazleton High's history. The one loss, sustained away at the hands of Bethlehem by the margin of two points, was later proved a fluke when the Mounts trounced the Hurricanes soundly at home. The Seniors rewrote the H.H.S. record book in practically every event. Len Buchman tied the 50-yard free style record and greatly lowered the time for the 100-yard butterfly stroke. Billy Russell broke the 100-yard back stroke record while Tim Barthalamus and Francis Cannon cracked the 100-yard breast stroke and 250-yard individual medley marks respectively. Finally Billy Russell, Tim Barthalamus, Len Buchman, and Jackie Galada climaxed a glorious season by setting a new record in the 150-yard medley relay at the District 11 meet at Stroudsburg. Undoubtedly it will be quite some time before these records are broken. The Coach Kushmider and the team this season was a dream come true after three years of ceaseless practice, and they deserved every bit ot' the honor bestowed upon them. No team could have wished for a finer coach than Mr. Kush- mider, who builds character, as well as champions, in boys. Congratulations on a job well done. Because it lacked overall depth and versatility. last year's squad posted a losing season. However, eleven of our present seniors formed the nucleus of that squad, and they gained invaluable experience during the process. Some of the lettermen from whom better things are expected include Fran Cannon in the mile, Len Buchman in the javelin, and Bob Kock in the discus. Track, one of the finest body building sports and also one of the most demanding is probably the oldest competitive sport known to man.
