Dear Audy, I've just lived over the happiest years of my life. Just imagine, a whole day with my friends from the Class of '41. I had a grand time. Most of us went to the grove in buses from Matteo's bus line. Rocco owns the line and some of the drivers were Johnny Sabia, Walter Davis and Melvin Levine. When we arrived there the place was crowded. Merle Fowbell and Regina Shigo were busy autographing boxes, hats, etc. Merle is starting in a new movie and can she tap dance! Regina is appearing in her grandest stage success, Victoria Regina. Then I went over to the swimming pool where Bud McGrory and Betty Charest were putting on an exhibition. Betty recently won a beauty contest. I went over to the lawn where Lois Ann Fairlie was sitting, watching the exhibition. She looked as lovely as ever and Fm sure her French pupils enjoy being taught by her. She told me Mary Ellen McLean wasn't at the reunion because she was too busy signing diplomas for the Luzerne High School seniors. She certainly is a competent principal. Over on the baseball diamond, George Andrejco was coaching one team and Bob Steckroth the other. Of course, they both are experienced so the game was good. George is coaching football at Fordham and Bob just received national recognition for his brilliant coaching at Princeton. His wife, Dorothy Tomasick Steckroth, was sitting on the sidelines, close by. The players were all flocking to the infirmary where nurses Janet Butterwick, Esther Brill, and Mary McElheney were in charge. But then, you certainly can't blame them. Our class has certainly contributed to the journalistic field. Mary Curilla's latest book has everyone talking. It seems as though every new one is better than the last. Norma Rothman was busy taking notes for her social page. The New York Times has certainly improved since Norma's on the staff. Of course, John Sharp's newspaper is still giving it plenty of competition. After all, it is the great, Philadelphia Recordu. Francis Fatsie, the Sports Editor for the Plain Speaker was very interested in the ball game. QQQEEEXEE 84 iixifffif A Agnes Golias, Anna Dulcey, and Stella Lash were sitting on the sidelines and munching popcorn. They were talking over business con- ditions and as private secretaries to prominent business men they are well versed. Betty Schaller is also in the business world. She is a sten- ographer in the P. P. Sz L. Mary Brill and Jean Bartol had to hurry off before noon, as they are working on the afternoon shift down at the Bell Telephone Switchboards. Salvador Mope and Billy Gissel were walking around smoking and passing out cigars to everyone. You can see the signs of successful business men all over them. The toastmaster at our banquet was Tommy Sweeney, our Class President. Tommy, has returned to his Alma Mater and is keeping up Hazleton's outstanding basketball record by his coaching at our High School. Anthony Chirico, the head chemist at the duPont Manufacturing Company was the main speaker. He had us all in awe with his records of new discoveries. Marie Keegan sat next to me at the table. Even though she is an important department store executive, she is still the same Marie. She told me that Peggy McCurley was taking a screen test next week. Peggy's Drill Corps is always in demand. She also said that Jean DeMarco, the child specialist is planning a lecture tour. The afternoon was soon over and then-the evening. We danced to the melodies of Anthony Clatch's orchestra. Lillian Scambia delighted us with a few solos. Her career with the Metropola- tian Operia Association is an outstanding one. Roy LaRock, our dashing army captain, was dancing with Mary Bachman, the famous dress de- signer. Florence Redelberger, Anthony Clatch's guest soloist, had us all humming the latest tunes out. Billy Smith, Yale's coach was in the stag line. Hels still the great romeo. Billy Thomas, Fred Gregor, William Hoffman and Jimmy Sauers were playing with Anthonyls orchestra for this special occasion. Of course, they are usually conducting their own on concert tours. Billy Muir was causing a mild riot, to say the least. He learned a lot of new tricks and jokes and he was telling them to everyone. The Jitterbug Contest was won by Dolores N alevancho and Dick Sager. Incidentally, I forgot to tell you who won the many contests we held during the day. Angeline Marrone, the typist champion, won the peanut- rolling race, and Josephine Long, the head nurse at the State Hospital won the pickle contest. QQXQQLQQG 85 l 059525555 The Fashion Show was also held in the evening. Some of the models were Rita Iiluri, Esther Fellin, Louise Slicker, and Irene Petruska. Janet Underwood, the stylist, described the latest fashions. Donald Cullen, was a scream, when he not only described the men's fashions but also modeled them. Byrnice Byorick was as witty as ever and she certainly kept the stag line moving. While I was dancing I noticed Robert Roth- acker, the manager of the New York X ankees enjoying himself. Both he and Frank DeI+'luri, the manager of the Philadelphia Athletics, were getting along together Cfor a changeb. The decorations in the hall were beautiful. Genevieve Lettiere and Phyllis Korba, the famous artist and interior decorators, were responsible for them. The Blue and White scheme was carried out, and you couldn't help remembering the Basket- ball games. Charles Sherry and his wife, Beatrice McCoy Sherry were dancing together when John Bove, the movie idol, cut in. John hasn't married yet, he would rather keep all the girls guessing. Mr. and Mrs. Mike Hazara Qshe was Helen Minnichb were having a grand time trying out the latest steps. Mike is the superintendent of the Duplan Knitting Mills and has proved to be an outstanding executive. Shat Gallagher and Joe Grega, mine foremen, were dancing the polka and the Irish Jig when I glanced over in their direction. You can just imagine how they looked, dancing together, but each one doing a different dance. Mary Grace Cauley, Marian Crease, and Isabelle Engard, were acting as hostesses to the out of town guests and doing a good job of it. Gosh, Audy, I'm so sorry you couldn't come to the reunion. You missed all of the actual gaiety but I hope I've helped you to relive some memories. After the dance was over, we all gathered around and sang the Alma Materg it certainly was a stirring scene. Finally we pulled down the blue and white decorations to take home as souvenirs, memories of the finest class that ever graduated from the Hazleton Senior High School. Once again we crowded into the buses, and drove homeward, singing the grand victory songs of the old school days. It was an unforgettable day for everyone of us. QQXQKQQQ A To T he Sophomores When the Sophomore Class entered High School last September it was the largest class to do so in the history of the school. lt Was made up of nine hundred and sixteen pupils. In the group there Were four hun- dred and twelve boys and five hundred and four girls. The class Was so large that there Wasn't enough room for them in the Senior High School. The Sophomore Commercials had to be sent over to the Arthur Street building. This plan has Worked out splendidly, and those pupils in the Annex have spent a happy and profitable year there. The Sophomores have contributed immensely to the success of our athletic teams, clubs, productions, and other activities. Some of them have become outstanding in their first year in High School, While a good many others are gaining the experience and poise that will enable them to become finished performers in their respective fields. The Sophomores established a record when they elected a girl, Gladys Snyder, for Class President. This is the first time that this has happened in the history of our High School. The experiment worked very Well, as the class has had a very successful year under the guidance of its president. To the Sophomores, We the Senior Class offer our congratulations for a successful year, and hope that you may go on to greater glory in the future. 055525 Eb 100 Who? All of the veterans of the previous year had graduated. The team started slowly, but gained momentum' as the season progressed, and really surprised their followers by capturing the first half Eastern League title. The fact that they did not repeat in the second half, and lost in the playoff for the 1940-41 title, did not dim the remarkable accomplishments of this year's squad. Coach Hugh McGeehan and his aides, Frank Serany and Vernard Fegley, are to be commended for the exceptionally fine job they have performed. A brief resume of the season is presented for your enjoyment. December 6 Hazleton 25 Northampton 18 ln the opening tilt of the season the H. H. S. Basketecrs showed that they were a team with possibilities. They came through in the latter periods of the game to score a victory. Moran and Smith sparked the H. H. S. team, while Jacoby and Yanik starred for the opposition. December 10 Hazleton 41 Bloomsburg 12 In this game the Mountaineers seemed to be rounding into form, and they showed signs of a speedier and more aggressive attack. The Sweeney, Smith, Steckroth, Polmounter, Hospidor, combination showed signs of developing into a real pennant contender. December 13 Hazleton 36 Milton 23 Again the Mountaineers came through, this time for a 36-23 victory over Milton High. Milton, being the toughest team met so far, played a smart game, but they were no match for the improved Mountaineers. Sweeney and Moran starred for the Blue and White. December 17 Hazleton 17 Williamsport 20 On December 17 the Billports brought forth a veteran team of deadshots, and defeated the Mountaineers on their home court. Our opponents played good basketball, and the sharpshooting ace, Brenner, led their attack. Poor foul shooting was the main cause for the Moun- taineers initial defeat. December 20 Hazleton 17 Reading 22 Reaching the end of their pre-season exhibition tilts, the Moun- taineers bowed to Reading. Many weaknesses were still evident that needed mending in preparation for the tougher games yet to come. Although much improved from the last game, the Mountaineers could not defeat the powerful Reading Quintet. January 3 Hazleton 34 Bethlehem 23 Before a capacity crowd, the Mountaineers beat Bethlehem in one of the season's most interesting games. The McGeehanites put on a 133 -55555555 wonderful exhibition of team work. Each member played like a veteran and it would be impossible to single out one or two as the stars of the game. January 7 Hazleton 26 Williamsport 29 A large crowd of Hazleton. fans flocked to Williamsport to see one of the most exciting games of the season. With good teamwork the Mountaineers were able to secure a 13-12 lead on the Billports at half time, but were unable to keep it. They were finally conquered by a veteran Billport quintet. Bresnock played a remarkable game, scoring several baskets at opportune moments. January 10 Hazleton 31 Pottsville 17 Profiting by their loss to Williamsport, the Mountaineers came through for a victory over the Potters. The defensive work of the Hazle- ton team was outstanding. Hospidor, Polmounter, and Smith starred for the locals. Sonny Boyer was the best for a potentially strong Pottsville team. January 17 Hazleton 31 Allentown 25 On January 17 the Mountaineers subdued their most important opponent to the tune of 31-25. The first quarter ended 5-4 in favor of H. H. S., and at the end of the second quarter, the Blue and White in full stride, led 17-8. It was in the second half of the game that the excitement became intense. Allentown started to creep up on the Moun- taineers, but they were stopped by a fighting H. H. S. Quintet. Each member of the team played an excep ionally fine defensive and offensive game. Smith came through for three brilliant shots in the last quarter which really decided the game in Hazleton's favor. January 21 Hazleton 39 Easton 30 H. H. S. fans were pleased with the excellent defensive and aggressive teamwork exhibited by the Mountaineers in defeating Easton by a score of 39 to 30. Steckroth, playing his usual good game at center, was outstanding in retrieving the ball for H. H. S., while Smith was the outstanding scorer. Easton was an aggressive and smooth functioning team. They put up a determined battle before bowing in defeat. January 24 Hazleton 38 Tamaqua 29 Hazleton journeyed to Tamaqua for the final game of the first half league race. The two teams met before a packed house, and thrilled their fans with a beautiful exhibition of basketball. The superior team play and shooting of Hazleton enabled them to emerge victorious. They had successfully gone through the first half campaign without a defeat and were the first half champions of the Eastern League. 134 QQXQQKQGA A January 28 Hazleton 45 Shenandoah 22 Hazleton made short work of a weak Shenandoah team. The final score was 45 to 22 in the local team's favor. Many varsity hopefuls of next year were given a chance to display their ability. February 4 Hazleton 16 Behtlehem 32 Tragedy marked the opening game of the second half. The Moun- taineers were upset to the tune of 32-16 by Bethlehem. Our opponents played a brilliant game, and their sharpshooting ace, Venninger, could not be halted. In contrast our team had shots that rolled around and then dropped out. February 7 Hazleton 28 Pottsville 27 Hazleton started by scoring a number of baskets with ease. It appeared at the beginning as though the game would be an easy conquest for the home team. In the second half Pottsville came to life, and by the end of the regulation game had tied the score. In the overtime period some brilliant work by Bresnock and Hospidor saved the day for Hazleton. February 14 Hazleton 22 Allentown 29 A fighting Hazleton team was defeated by Allentown at Allentown, by a score of 29-22. The Mountaineers displayed their best form of the year, but the superior reserve strength of the Canaries was too great an obstacle to overcome. The game was very close throughout, the score being tied at 14-14 at half time. Each member of the Mountaineer team played a hard, consistent game. February 21 Hazleton 30 Easton 31 Hazleton lost a heart breaker to Easton by a one point margin. The Red Rovers started fast, and soon had gained a sizable lead. The Mountaineers finally tied the score, and then went one point ahead with seconds remaining. Easton was not to be denied though, and a long shot by Rothenhausler settled the game in their favor. February 28 Hazleton 36 Tamaqua 23 With Moran running wild, the Mountaineers succeeded in trouncing the Tammies by a score of 36-23. Bresnock, Smith, Hospidor, and Moran played in championship form. March 4 Hazleton 24 Allentown 32 Before a record crowd of 7,500 rabid fans in the University of Penn- sylvania Palestra, Hazleton met Allentown to determine the league champion. The game was close and exciting until the final minutes when the superior reserve strength of Allentown decided it in their favor. The whole Mountaineer team performed capably, and they were not disgraced, even in defeat. 135 i Q .1 .uv 'N- n 4 .23-.. 'O 1 aj , I a Y' '- xo X ' , X 1 N Mk 5 ,N PQ 5- ' . N Q l X'- 'ff 'Q 45. May they leave with us many of those qualities they possessed, above all their courage and their determination to improve day by day. They suffered bitter disappointment, yet al- ways smiling like the true champions they were, they gave us their best. S. J. Oleniczak, Head Football Coach September 20 Hazleton 6 McAdoo O The Mountaineer's season got off to an auspicious start when they defeated a strong McAdoo team at the Harman-Geist Stadium. The game was hard fought throughout, but the Mountaineers smashed through for six points in the first quarter. This was the extent of the scoring for the game, although both teams threatened several times. September 28 Hazleton 0 Williamsport 14 A very strong Williamsport team subdued a fighting Hazleton team in the second game of the season. The Mountaineers were able to hold the visitors at bay most of the game, but two quick thrusts by the veteran Williamsport aggregation decided the encounter in their favor. October 4 Hazleton 0 Shenandoah 13 The Blue Devils of Shenandoah finally broke the jinx held over them by Hazleton. The Blue and White held the upper hand for most of the game, but several costly fumbles spoiled their scoring chances. Finally the superior strength of Shenandoah enabled them to score twice in the final quarter. October 12 Hazleton 0 Steelton 20 Hazleton journeyed to Steelton for their second conference game, and suffered their third consecutive defeat. The Steelers displayed a varied attack and mixed up their plays nicely. The Mountaineers again suffered on the attack by fumbling at crucial moments. October 18 Hazleton 12 Hazle Township 0 The Mountaineers returned to the win column by defeating a stub- born Township eleven under the lights at Harman-Geist Stadium. The game was hard fought throughout, but the excellent team play of the Blue and White carried them to victory. October 25 Hazleton 46 Freeland 7 On a wet, muddy field the Mountaineers ran up their biggest score of the year. The Blue and White team clicked beautifully, and they presented a varied attack. Most of the squad were given an opportunity to show their ability. November 2 Hazleton 0 Bethlehem 15 The mighty Bethlehem team, and ultimate conference champions, needed the breaks they received to defeat a gallant Blue and White team. Hazleton outplayed and out fought the Red and Blue for three quarters of the game, yet due to costly misplays were behind 8-0. Finally the Red Hurricane, in the final quarter, were able to push across another touchdown. November 9 Hazleton 7 Shamokin 21 The Shamokin Greyhounds were easily the best drilled and smart- est team to meet Hazleton at home all season. They played smart, hard football. The Mountaineers played a good game, and came out of the tussle with the distinction of being the first team to cross Shamokin's goal line this season. November 15 Hazleton 12 Pottsville 7 Hazleton registered their first conference win by beating Potts- ville on a rain soaked field. The Mountaineers were an aggressive, hard charging team in this game, and really dominated the play more than the score would indicate. November 28 Hazleton 18 Sunbury 0 On a snow covered field the Mountaineers defeated Sunbury in the final game of the season. Poor playing conditions limited both teams, when on the offense, to straight football. Sunbury was completely outclassed by the Hghting Blue and White of Hazleton. Winning the final game enabled Hazleton to finish the season with five wins and five losses. This is really a tribute to the excellent coach- ing of Stanley Oleniczak and Paul Shaw. They started the season with an almost entirely new squad. Starting out with very little the coach- ing staff developed the boys into a fighting well drilled team. With a few good breaks they might have been one of the best in the conference. ,.1 HARRY LEWIS-FACULTY ADXISI R HAZLICTON HIGH SCHOOL CHETR LI -XDIINC' SQI XD VLA, Dx W .44 Q W4 X MW C-Ui ' X Q , H w 5 'Aff-4 . We've been busy practicing up on our strokes and dives for our annual Water Follies, presented on April 29. Our assembly program, a thrilling one-act play entitled, The Spider was a big success. Another outstanding event was our swimming party held during the winter. Of course, the one event looked forward to by each and every member of this organization is the Spring Dinner Dance .
