It was no different than any other building made of brick and stone and mortarg and frankly, we didn't even notice the classicism of the Ionic pillars which graced the entrance. To us arriving it was a symbol of frustration. Our activities would be curtailed for a long time. Could we ever get to love it? Never! And so time went on and on and on. We acquainted our- selves with our cells and cellmates, sort of condoled ourselves, our fate was alike. We were inmates of the same institution. And time wore on and on, now faster in its pace, ever faster- one year, two years, three years, and with the speed of jet propulsion we were hurled headlong into our fourth and iinal year. Yes, you guessed itg we lost our prejudices, our little nonsensical hatreds. The turnabout is complete. Today this brick and mortar is no longer a heap of rubble. Each brick, each niche and cranny has become a hal- lowed, almost sacred shrine, and we love each and every single iota of it. T his is our Alma Mater. S 3 W. A Foreword The purpose of the 1954 ANCORA is to record the deeds of the Senior Class. In the years ahead it will keep alive the memories of our four years in H.T.H.S. Although each suc- ceeding year will bring new faces and new experiences to the school scene, this will be a record of friends they knew, things they did, and memories that will always be near to them. 1 Contents . ,f ' ,'i Alma Mater ............ N X X , if X gi ' an! I4 Reminiscing Our Past As the close of our Senior year draws nearer and nearer, we pause to reflect upon the four glorious and enchanted years we've spent within the hal- lowed walls of H.T.H.S. Memories Hash through our minds-some distinct, others a blurred mass. Let us record those memories so that when Hazle Township becomes Alma Mater, and our high school days grow dimmer and dimmer, we may turn to these pages and relive them again. It was a bright sunny day in September, 1950. Buses from Harwood, Cranberry, jeddo, Beaver Brook and a dozen other small but mighty towns delivered 123 excited Freshmen to this entirely un- familiar building which was to become our haven and our refuge. We wandered through the seem- ingly endless corridors trying to appear nonchalant and unpertrubed, but not really fooling anyone. It was one perplexing situation after another. Someone handed us schedule cards which might just as well have been written in Greek. We stopped to ask directions to a room and received a cool, snobbish reply. fWe thoughtj. Out of all the students we happened to ask His Highness, Sir Senior! Doesn't he remember that he was a fresh- man once? But as the days and weeks flew by, we gradually got acquainted with the school and its occupants- we got into the swing of things, so to speak-we soon learned that high school life was not all play and really dug into that stack of books piled on our thin arms . . . We were lucky to receive as Class Adviser Miss Joyce McLaughlin, also a new comer to Township. The year was climaxed with a roller skating party and a never-to-be-forgotten trip to Dorney Park. Oh, what bliss! Seated left to right: Theresa Chasar, Secretary-Treasurerg Mary Ann Suda, President, Standing: Thomas Sunder, Vice- President. N Left to Right: Leonard Kassick, Vice-Presidentg Mary Ellen Geffert, Secretary, Lucy Safko, Treasurerg Timmie Sunder, President. Back again, all too soon for some. Wie soon lost ourselves in the orderly confusion of our Sophomore year. It was not as eventful we might have liked, but then, those typing, history and algebra assignments were a bit stiffer than Freshman subjects. VVe held a few roller skating parties- Anyone have an extra pillow? . . . VVe chanced off a portable radio- 'fdoesn't anyone want to buy a chance? I've got three more books to sell . . . And oh yes, Freshmen asked us for directions that year. VVe tried not to lift our heads too high in giving them. Ah, revenge is sweet! Before we knew it our Junior year was upon us. We grew a few inches, our importance was increased as upper classmen, our subjects were tougher yet- Fundamentally, though, life was the same. Miss McLaughlin did not return to school that year and we were left without an adviser-orphans until Mr. Bobowski stepped into the position and saved the day. The following officers were elected: President, Joseph Tallaricog Vice-President, Teddy Hopeekg Secretary, Becky Schafferg Treasurer, Confident Sophomores Happy faces at Christmas Party Mary Yuhas. With their help, and that of Mr. Bobowski we really hit the top of the social ladder. VVhat a whirl-November, our first dance, Aristo- crats! VVe threw a few parties . . . received our beautiful class rings in time for Christmas . . . strained our lungs cheering at pep-rallies . . . we planned, practiced, and practiced more for our first production-junior Day. And what a program it was! Our highest hopes and dreams materialized. Two more major events took place: A trip to New York to watch the United Nations at work and to see many other famous landmarks, the climaxing event of the year-a wonderful trip to Hershey Park. Then the beads of perspiration dropped from our brows-maybe because it was a hot day in june- or maybe because those final exams were really stiff! Man! I A The Climax Mixed emotions overcame us as the inevitable Senior year approached. We started right in and tackled our responsibilities squarely. Our problems doubled, our rewards tripled, and our expenses quadrupled. In order to finance every Seniors' dream, a yearbook, we mapped out a plan of attack against the merchants of the city and sur- rounding area. They resisted but we had them con- quered! The only alternative was to sign the treaty -a check entitling them to an advertisement in the Ancora . . . we sold Christmas cards, writing paper, wrapping paper, magazine subscriptions until we became veteran salesmen . . . we induced our parents to become sponsors and we threatened the under- classmen into buying books. After the Shipper eleven won their first football game against McAdoo, we celebrated with a Vic- tory Dance . . . when Christmas rolled around, we decorated two Christmas trees, . . . held homeroom parties, enjoyed Mistletoe Day, and helped put on a Christmas program which included a Christmas Dragnet . As this Ancora goes to press we are looking fore- ward to the fulfilment of our Senior year . . . a few more dances . . . a four day trip to the Nation's Capital . . . Senior Day production . . . Senior Day Dance . . . the Prom . . . and ultimately-Graduaf tion. With these memories safely tucked within our hearts we look toward the future. What it holds for each of us no one knows, but we ferventlypray that the powers that guided us in the past will continue to guide us in the future. The past four years that we have spent at Hazle Township have been good years, happy years, but all good things must come to an end. And so, to our friends, our teachers and our well-wishers, and especially to you, Alma Mater, we say Farewell. Our days with you have ended. F ini! A , .- -:E - A f 54, if 4' ef , On the morning of June 2, 1975 we set out for the Interplanetary Testing Grounds from which we were to leave on our journey into space. Heading this expedition were the famous scientists, Norbert Lucash and Mary Yuhas. The calculations of our journey were figured by the world's famed mathematician, Robert Fetch, assisted by Andrew Woytek. As we approached the testing grounds, our Rocketship was being fueled by Albert Pangrac, Thomas Mulligan, and Edward Boyle. Looking over the list of expeditionists, we observed the names of Mary Galatha, the famous Congress- woman, accompanied by her secretaries, Mary Ellen Gejert, Theresa Chasar, and Patricia Fedor. Other notable personalities included Patricia Alexander, famous actressg Rebecca Schafer, ballet dancerg Alice Gregory, Metropolitan Opera star, and Thomas Sander, All-American football hero. Theodore Hopeck, Bernard Zawatsky, and Patrick Bonner concluded our list of outstanding passen- gers. The pilots, John Oscovitch and James Slebodnick, assisted by the crew mem- bers, Elizabeth Dinsmore, Pearl Gavinski, John Gazick, and Fred Holland, were briefed by General Vincent Serock. At 10:45 A. M. we had a swift take-off to our destination-Mars. Traveling at tremendous speed, we realized we would be at Mars in a short time. At 10:00 P. M. our Rocket landed on the planet Mars. Thinking our Hight was the first to Mars, we were shocked to notice that other individuals with whom we were acquainted on earth had already inhabited this planet. As we climbed from the Rocket, the crew was greeted by the following re- porters of the Mars Times : Amelia Russell, Gloria Keller, and Sally Generose. They had mentioned that Monica Daniels and Martha Kaminsky edited the newspaper. Walking down Space Street, we noticed Leo Parofs Photo Shop and Joseph Ciochon's Sporting Goods Store. Turning the corner, we saw Betty Chehovich painting a portrait of the famous model, Elizabeth Hirko. By that time we were famished: therefore, we decided to eat at Joseph Matz's Restaurant. Upon entering the restaurant, we observed that the cashier was Mary Ann Suda. Our order was taken by Marian Tarapchak, a lovely blonde waitress. While conversing we learned that the head chef of the restaurant was William Generose. After dinner we went to the Hotel Planitary owned and operated by James McGarry. When we entered the hotel we were greeted by the manager, Francis Resuta, who informed us that Leonard Kassick, the famous crooner, was cur- rently appearing at the Hotel's Martian Room. Other celebrities appearing here as chorus girls were Bernice Nahay, Sylvia Surochak, Mary Seaman, Marian McMonigle, Geraldine Wycheck and Loretta Stamm. While attending this show, we happened to meet a few more of our old friends. Among the most prominent were Doctors Henry Buzanowicz and Robert Barkocy with their nurses, Ruth Hebal.and Grace Dedngelo, and the attorneys-at-law, Peter Kovalick, Joseph Fedor, and Michael Sarosky. 42 The Future The following day we toured Rocketville, a city which is famous for its space equipment. We learned that this planet was owned by Leziash, McLaughlin 65 Washko, Inc. The head foreman was Jacob Yaskanich whose assistant was Steven Gladis. Another strange thing that we noticed about this planet was that its govern- ment was totally run by women. The president of their planetarian government was Joan Sweich. Members of the planetariat were Mary Ray, Janet Hauser, Emilie Smith, Merle Sims, Joan Smolen, and Patricia Clark. The Secret Service was headed by Agnes Barna and comprised of Margaret Bogwist, Agnes Chicalese, Regina Gasper, and Dolores Harascak. Being that our time allotment was short, we prepared for our journey home- ward. After a rapid take-off, we traveled for a few hours when we developed Rocket trouble. Suddenly we felt ourselves being drawn by a strange force of gravity. The force increased steadily until we found ourselves on another strange planet. With a great impact our Rocket hit ground. An oddly-shapedobject approached our Rocket from which came people clad in weird costumes. We recognized them as some of our earthly acquaintances. The first persons that we noticed coming out of the strange object were Nancy Pelley and Joseph T allarico followed by their companions, Anna M ae M ackanich, Theresa LaBuda, Bernadine Motel, and Lucy Safko. They informed us of their life on Venus. They also sug- gested a place where our Rocket could be repaired. When we got to the place, we noticed the mechanics were Victor Cortez, Eugene Lewis, George Velcko, and Michael Sisack. Making ready for our departure homeward, we made a last- minute check of our calculations and were on our way. A few minutes later, we discovered four stowaways, Marie Hoblyak, Patricia Martino, Irene Scavnicky, and Margaret Yurescko, who played on our sympathies with their tales of home- sickness. We arrived at the Interplanetary Testing Grounds at 7:20 P. M. We made our report and once more returned back to our own little cities of HazleTownship, in 5 K' vp Hg ill '. l 0 l till! Even before our football togs were checked in, we were dribbling basketballs in our gym and magnetizing our eyes on that ring through which our scores would register bigger and better. Mr. Sweeney became our head coa.ch. He made it clear that personal glory was a very improper attitude, and he would tolerate none of it. Under his tutelage we developed a conscious attitude of confidence. Of our opening games we won two out of eight starts. Then 'we went into league play. At this writing, january 30, 1954, the first half race has been completed. We ended up in a double tie for second place with a record of four wins and two losses. We are kind of proud of it. VVe are not so naive, though, as to think the job could have been done without the help of many people. VVe, the Ancora Staff and the class of 1954 owe a great debt of gratitude to Mr. Hellings for his profound interest in our plightg to Mr. Boyle for his saintly patience in tolerating our many anticsg to Mr. Urosevich for preparing his footballers for photography and later identify- ing themg to Mr. Sweeney for his part not only in making ar- rangements for photographing his basketeers and identifying them, but likewise for planning our advertising campaigng and to Mr. Frank Dushanko for his catering so unselfishly to our every whim and fancy, and for the many really professional pic- tures. VVere we to enumerate all who lent so generously of their time and effort to this book we would go on without end. However, to them we offer our hand in sin- cere gratitude. You are wonder- ful. ep.. They drew up a constitution, selected officers, and staged their first play. The F.H.A. was organized last year by the members of the Home Econo- mics classes. It is part of a state and national organization. The members have held a bake sale, sold cosmetics, and held a dance in order to raise money for a trip to the Pocono Mts. where the annual convention of Home- makers was held this year. rgfvwvmw C CFC while in Chemistry he-men don aprons while Miss Hanley teaches the system- atic touch of typewriting.
