New-made friendships, like new wine, Age will mellow and refine. Friendships that have stood the test- Time and change-are surely best: Brow may wrinkle, hair grow gray, Friendship never knows decay. For 'mid old friends, tried and true, Once more we our youth renew. But old friends, alas! may die, New friends must their place supply. Cherish friendship in your breast- New is good, but old is best: Make new friends, but keep the old: Those are silver, these are gold. With our various fund raising activities, we were able to call our Junior year a huge success. Throughout the summer and fall we focused our energies on fund raising activities such as car washes, dances and coupon book selling. During the winter we planned for the major project of our Junior year, Spring Prom. lt was a night to be remembered! l'd like to take this time to thank each of the Juniors who made this year possible. Thanks to you, we were one of the richest classes Hazen has ever known. Your enthusiasm and support throughout the year was the key to our success. Every Junior in the Class of 1983 can look back and be proud of what we have accomplished! Thanks! The renovation was quarterback Steve Brown who was finally allowed to throw. Brown took advantage of the new dimension by leading the league in pass completion percentage and finishing 2nd in the league in the overall quarterback statistics. Brown's primary receivers were: Tony Coe, 2nd in the league in receptions: Pete Dohrn, 4th in the league in receptions: and the deep threat Pat Nangle who averaged 17.5 yds per reception. In the backfield Hazen boast- ed 3 excellent running backs led by Desmond Petty's 6.63 yds per carry followed by John Van Geystel's 6.55 yds per carry and Marcus Wroten's 4.5 yds per carry. Using a balanced offense and a tough defense the Highland- ers came within one game of making the playoffs. In the Homecoming game against the Kent Meridian Royals Hazen was battling for a division title but a last second defeat cost them the title and a playoff berth. At the awards banquet special recognition was given to: John Van Geystel, Hazen's Most Valuable Player, NPSL 2nd team defensive back and Honorable Mention running back: Tony Coe, NPSL 1st team wide receiver, 1st team defensive back: Curt Mosier, Hazen Lineman of the year, NPSL 2nd team offensive tackle and NPSL Honorable Mention defensive tackle: Desmond Petty, NPSL 2nd team running back: and Dave Cur- ley, NPSL 2nd team guard. When the 1981-82 cross country season started, the Hazen runners ' had a few hopes for the outcome of the season. The boys' team, a perennial power and the defending NPSL champs, hoped to continue the tradition while the girls' team hoped to start a powerful traditon of their own. The boys fought adversity through most ofthe season as they finished the regular season with a 5-4 record. The girls, during the regular season, found little if any adversity as they broke Kennedy's girls' cross country dominance as they beat the Lancers and finished the regular season in a tie for 1st place. When the boys' and girls' teams went to the NPSL meet both were predicted to do well. With the impressive regular season record the girls were picked to finish no worse than 3rd but injuries allowed only a 4th place finish. The boys, led by Paul Keire's 6th place finish, took Ord place and like the girls advanced tothe WCD meet. At the WCD meet both teams had a tough time as unexpected illness to Cathy and Theresa Goeddeke caused them to drop out and with them the girls' team's state meet hopes. Though neither team qualified for the state meet the boys' team succeeded in keeping up the winning tradition and the girls' team began their quest as a cross country power. .W -'141pg.3S5,:Vg SX I iigg ' . 5- .. -0 - .. On the surface, it might seem that Hazen's four-victory wres- I tling season was a total disappointment. However, factors of transition point to a fine future for Highlander wrestling. Arriv- ing at the school for his second head-coaching position, Mike Sanford is fostering the youth movement at Hazen. And there have been a lot of youth with whom to work. Next year's most promising wrestlers were also this season's most successful. Juniors Dan Kyes C7-SJ and Jim Wurst C13-8-1 including 3rd place finishes in the NPSL and State Regional Tournamentsj both return to a solid underclass nucleus next season. Joining the two Seniors-to-be will be the promising Sophomores-Gregs, Allen and Denny-and a very fine Fresh- man crop spearheaded by Tino Velasquez, Gary McGinnis, Eric Granberg, and Pete Van Nortwick. If the Highlander Frosh teams, maturing this year, are any indication of things to come in wrestling, better days are in store for Hazen. In their final match of the 81-82 season, the freshman grapplers avenged an earlier season loss by thrash- ing the cross town rival, the Renton Indians, 31-6, leaving no doubt that there is wrestling talent in them thare hills. The 1982 Softball program did not possess a long string of wins but it had a suc- cessful program in respect to the growth of the individual athlete and the program in general. It is one of the most important groups at Hazen: the result of the time and hard work it spends is seen by virtually everyone in the school as a yearbook that has it's own character and that reflects the character of the people at Hazen. Cooperation is essential among the members of the staff. When everyone works together they can expect to put together a good annual. A person who is a member must be a person with initiative and perserverance who will give his or her best effort when helping to put together the many pieces of the book into its final form: a good looking book that everyone will appreciate and enjoy. I can look out the window and see a leaf float softly to the ground. As it falls the wind grabs a hold of it and whips it to the other side of the tree. My attention shifts to the wind as it starts hissing through the trees. The grass ripples like little waves of the ocean. Paper, leaves and anything loose the wind takes hold of swirls around and around, first to the left and then to the right like a wild animal clawing in a cage. I can watch the wind for hours and feel the shivers go up and down my spine. As I watch, it slowly dies until nothing moves but a leaf falling slowly to the ground without making a sound. Silence returns. -Joanne Crawford Friendship is, , . Friendship is like a rainbow, bright, beautiful and bold. Friendship is like snow, it comes and it goes. Friendship is like the sun, it's bright and warm. Friendship is like a mountain, it has its peaks. Friendships are like cherries, They have their pits.
