They found out that garbage cans were not for trash, but for frosh. As a part of their initiation, the upper gym doors were closed on them. Slowly they learned the Highlander ways and by the time they were sophomores they had their own school spirit and pride. As a fund raiser T-shirts and spirit buttons were sold. Then came the time all sophomores wait for: passing traffic safety and cruising around on their own. As ju- niors, in '78, a Leap Frog-Athon was sponsored and they had their picture in the paper leaping around Seattle Center. Spring Prom was the highlight ofjunior year. As seniors, they finally found out what it was like to rule the school. The leadership of Mer Walkama, a slave day, Carnation sales, and other fund raisers highlighted their last year at Hazen. Senior Ball, Graduation, and Senior Party brought their final year to a close. FIFTY WIDE XI MMU if II 'C Tenor-Bass Chorus This year the tenor-bass chorus accom- plished many things. They bettered their understanding of music both theo- retically and vocally. They also per- formed at the fall, winter, and spring concerts. Something new for the group was the NPSL contest. This was the second year the tenor-bass chorus had competed in the contest and they did quite well. They also sang at a grade- school in the spring. Soprano-Alto Chorus This year's soprano-alto chorus was a fine group of musicians. Their objective was to learn and understand music. With the help of Mr. McManus they not only learned, but had an enjoyable time doing so. Their accomplishments this year were performing at the fall, winter, and spring concerts. This was not only an enjoyable time for the girls, but for the audience also. The soprano- alto chorus also participated in the NPSL contest, where they competed against other high schools and did well in their ratings. -. .,. ri' f R. Atto, J. Alex, R. Becker, D. Each squad attended Washington State Cheerleading Camp in Ellensbcrg for one week, each returning with new ideas and full of enthusiasm! The 1978-79 Highlander cheer staff had a unique structure. Two squads of six girls each, were elected to positions on the blue and gold squads. Together, with the help of four yell kings, they cheered for each of Hazen's varsity sports. The blue squads responsibilities included boy's and girl's soccer, football, boy's and girl's basketball, and track. Gold squad cheerleaders had volleyball, cross country, boy's and girl's swimming, wrestling, gymnastics, baseball, softball, and tennis. The yell kings helped out both squads with their enthusiasm and support. Pep assemblies were a co-operative effort between the three squads. Together they organized some of Hazen's most spirited assemblies, including such attractions as visiting cheerleaders, paper airplanes, sitting on ice, and spirit shirts for the fall coaches. The thirty members of the class particpated in and initiated many activities for their school, community, and their citie's morale. The class gath- ered old toys for Toys for Tots, ap- peared on a local television show, held a dance, and had numerous fund raisers. Two of the more important fund raisers were the sale of Almond Roca and their participation in a dance marathon, both were for muscular dystrophy, the offi- cial charity of the Distributive Educa- tion Clubs of America. SEVENTY-EIGHT Art Club ' ,,. ,J This year for the first time the National Art Education Association is sponsoring an Art honor society for high school students. Membership is open only to students of National Art Ed. members. Ha7en is evidently the 3rd school in the nation to begin a local chapter. This means there will be less competition for the national awards and scholarships which will be available, this first year. We are hoping Ha7en students will win some of these awards. Besides working for the national awards the students created a Christmas display for the Renton Shopping Mall and earned 550.00 for their treasury. Part ofthe money will be used for society field trips to museums and gallerys. Greg Warzecha is the president. T 1 an ,I ,f Y so 'e ' gl The Diversified Occupations Club this year started off with a fundraiser by selling Almond Roca. The big . - event of the club, though. was their visit to the Childrens Orthopedic Hospital, just before Christmas. The Y . group dressed in holiday costumes as Santa and his helpers, then set out to spread some Christmas cheer, with the patients. The children enjoyed the company and it gave the D.O.
