Assemblies There are many assemblies throughout the year here at Hazen. The majority of these are pep assemblies, but occasionally there are other types, such as the Bi- centennial Assembly and the Home- coming Coronation Assembly. Attendence Office In keeping- with our goal of including everybody in the yearbook, we on the Lonach staff asked a random sampling of students this interesting question: what is your opinion of Hazen,s attend- ance office? I think they're doing a very goodjobf' I wish I could get hold of some of their admit to class slips. They always tell me I was there when I wasn't or Iwasn't when I was. It's an alphabetical conspiracy to destroy the student body of Hazen. I think the ladies in there are doing the best they can at a very hardjobf' Bicentennial I976 is, as most people know, the year ,of the American Bicentennial celebration. It has also been the year of what could be called the Great Bicentennial Rip- Off. Various manufacturers have tried to sell us Bicentennial T-shirts, light bulbs, pens, and other gimmicks nobody really wants but feels compelled to buy in the name of patriotism. But is this refigy patriotism-are there any patriots C t. A patriot is defined as one who defends or is zealous for his country's rights or freedoms. For some people this can mean fighting and perhaps losing their life in war. There are radicals f dreamers, people laughed at and scorned for want- ing to be different, But these people are patriotic in their own way, by daring to hope for better things for their country. And there are other patriotsfthose ordinary citizens who help their country by obeying laws and trying to live up to the ideals set by the writers of the Con- stitution 200 years ago. So maybe patriotism isn't dead, and won't die as long as there are people to whom patriotism means more than listening to a Bicentennial minute. Student Life I I

Student Life OI' Alphabetized Atrocities Apathy The New Party Once upon a year, ln a land not far from here, A wise old man formed a political party, And Apathy is what he called this party. No cares is what he promised the folk And the crowd trembled as he spoke, He started, Dearest people of the nation My party will mean world salvation, All you have to dare Is to say that you don't care, And then never again a concern will you share. Then he hit them with his slogan, Be a friend to your fellow man, Never help him, even when you can, Then he exclaimed, Don't get involved, And all your problems will be solved, Don't care ifyour brother lives with famine, Don't reach to fill his plate oftin, Why should you as long as you are living, There's no reason for you to keep on giving. Black Student Union The Black Student Union provides an opportunity for black students to find out and learn more about their background and culture. This is their sixth year in existence at Hazen. A lot of credit goes to this year's advisor, Ms. Harris. This year's president was Katrina Freeman, vice president, Susan Talley, Secretary, Mary Oli- phant and Historian, Teri Proctor. lj The members ol' the Black Student Union: FRONT ROW: Teri Proctor, Susan Talley. It was held on No- vember 5, 1975, and 123 pints were donated. The P.T.A. mothers helped out, as they do every year, by assisting the nurses in various ways SL reassur- ing those students who had second thoughts about giving blood. The stu- dents who gave blood had the satis- faction of knowing that they were helping someone else. 25 Ted waits apprehensively while the nurse gets ready to drain his blood.
