English English Students Stud English for The main obiective ot the Language Arts Depart- ment is the teaching ot communication skills-reading, writing, listening, and speaking. Each skill has specitic goals. The student is encouraged to appreciate liter- ature and to develop a lite-long interest in reading. ln addition to reading, the spelling, punctuation, cap- italization, organization, and thinking skills are taught. The Language Arts otter l7lf2 units ot credit. These include courses in English, speech, drama, de- bate, journalism, reading, creative writing, and three toreign languages. This year, tor the tirst time, English IV is required. lt is thought that the student whose tormal education terminates with graduation needs as much training in mastering his language as the college-bound student. By taking tour years ot English, each student is given the opportunity to reach his potential in communica- tion. Two new' courses. creative writing and rapid read- ing, were added to the curriculum. The reading course teaches the student to retine all reading skills and to develop critical reading skills. Creative writing is a laboratory course in which the student creates, revises. edits, rewrites, and evaluates his writings. The library also has expanded to meet student needs. An additional room was added to the library, and more than 2200 books were purchased this year. GROUP DISCUSSION . . . Mrs. Tamarkin prefers a circular arrangement tor her English lll class.
