Our society depends upon individuals hav- ing the ability to work cooperatively and effec- tively with others. Although this concept points up the necessity for competence in vocational training, there is also involved the matter of human relations. At the present time there is considerable literature dealing with our lack of scientists and mathematicians. It is important that we have adequately prepared youth to care for America's needs in these fields. However, it is also imperative that our countryls citizens are prepared to deal humanly with people in other lands to solve problems common to many. The secondary schools of today are training youth to fulfill these objectives. This yearbook repre- sents, on a minor scale, a segment of that train- ing. Congratulations to the yearbook stafif and sponsor for a job well done. Mr. C. O. McDonald Hazelwood Schools are concerned with providing opportunity 'for effective learning along lines believed desirable by the supporting community. The primary responsibility is to en- able young men and women to build on the heritage of the past. This means our school is concerned with developing not only the skills of learning and communication, but also the abilities to define and solve problems and to exercise discrimi- nating judgment in choosing goals and means of attaining goals. Persons so educated will value their free institutions, and will look critically upon their operation and seek constantly to make them more effective for the realization of aspirations. Mr. Clifford R. Kirby

The School' Board is typical of the form of government of many institutions in the United States - churches, hospitals, schools, libraries, welfare and character-building agencies as well as business and commercial organizations. It is American tradition to forma govering board when the affairs of an organization get too complicated for the membership to operate. The American School Board has served to keep the public schools an immediate possession of the people rather than of gen- eral government or of professional educators or of private corpo- rations. It has also served as a prime protection against the domination of schools by an ism or any centralized pattern for remolding society. OUR SCHOOLS BEGAN AS LOCAL INSTITUTIONS, SCHOOL BOARDS KEEP THEM THAT WAY. -American Association of School Administrators. School Board- Superintendent Relationships. Thirty-Fourth Yearbook. 7
