. Volume 49 1984 Hazel Park High School 23400 Hughes Hazel Park, Michigan 2 3 4 5 THESE YEARS 6 1984 DEDICATION PRESENTED TO MARK GAUZE. FOR OUR APPRECIATION! The 1984 Viking was dedicated to Mark Gauze, and presented to him at the 1984 Senior Banquet. Mark is an all- around terrific person and cares so much for the students and school. When you have forgotten something in the school, Mark is always happy to open a locked classroom or closed gate. During the year, Mark was present at every athletic event. Making sure everything was running smoothly. He has been helpful with the yearbook staff, constantly opening this door or that door, and also helping out Vikettes and B.O.D. So, in appreciation, we dedicate the 1984 Viking yearbook to you, Mark Gauze, for being such a great friend and caring about our high school. Thank You! 8 A little surprised? The styles range from anywhere to short mini- skirts to cropped jeans for the girls and the guys were as much on the fashion trend wearing dyed jeans, blue jean jackets, and parachut pants. Hair styles have changed with bobbed hair cuts and perms for the girls while the guys were into spiked on top. Everyone wore the wet look with mousse. Accessories were also in this year with everyone wearing punk glasses with the strings. Many different kinds of earrings were also popular and not to mention the plastic shoes. Sayings were also in this year with everyone asking WHERE’S THE BEEF, or I DON’T SEE IT, and the ever so popular PSYCH. Songs also made a big impression this year starting with the popular Micheal Jackson and his big hits this year starting with Thriller which also turned out to be a big TV video hit. Also were Beat It, Billie Jean, to only mention a few. Other popular Hello, Rebal Yell, Jump, and Hold songs this year were FootLoose, Me Now. Many of these songs we heard for the first time at some of the best movies of the year starting with FootLoose, Against All Odds, Friday The 13 The Final Chapter, Silkwood, and Police Academy. There were many things happening around the world starting right here in Hazel Park with the school district having its 10Oth birthday. The Presidental elections were also this year with our first black candidate Rev. Jesse Jackson. We also crowned our first Miss Black America, Venesa Williams. We all watched the summer Olypics in Los Angeles. While the Russian Communist Nations boycotted. Our Marines lost their lives in Labanon when they were bombed while trying to keep peace, while in Grenanda we were invading the country. As the year draws to an end we will not forget our memories in and out of school, and also the events around the world. SPIRIT WEEK Fun, Excitement and Spirit Highlight the Week Spirit week was one of the most fun and crazy things we did during Homecoming. Competition was strong during the week between sophomores, juniors and seniors, but in the end we came together as Vikings. Each day everyone dressed differently. Monday was Nerd Day, Tuesday, Inside Out - backwards Day. On Wednesday the halls looked like 1950, as the girls borrowed from their mom’s closet and the guys got out the Bryl Creme. Thursday, was Sweats Day, and this was the most comfortable day all week! Finally Friday came and everyone showed their spirit by wearing the schools colors, maroon and gray. 61 V Martina Holstine, Debbie Allen, Grace Craighton, and Amy Bailey in deep concentration. Each class had participants in a variety of events. These games included the four-legged race, tricycle race, dress your partner, shaving cream dress, tug-o-war, and the drinking contest. Finally the events were over with, seniors again the victors, sophomores second, and juniors in third place. Everyone anxiously awaited the announcement of the king and queen, but not before the mock court showed us a little of what the candidates were like. After each court member was introduced, the big moment came - the introduction of this year’s king and queen, Dante Burchi and Sheila Byrd. 1983 king and queen Dante Burchi and Sheila Byrd. 19B3 Homecoming Court. 64 Grace Craighton and Brian Krupa. l n -J -J Hurry up” screams Vicki Walmer to Davida Ahlfield. Tina LeBlanc and Diane Ignatius. w King Queen Dante Burchi and Sheila Byrd Dante Burchi has a very well liked personality and could get along with just about anyone. He is a three-year member of the basketball team, of which he is captain this year. He also participates in cross country and track. Dante is very busy during the school hours as well. He is a member of Board of Directors, National Honor Society, and is co editor of the yearbook. Sheila Byrd is a person that everyone likes to be around or just to know. When you think of Sheila the first thing that might enter your mind is that she was this year’s homecoming queen, but she is much more. Her activities include being president of BOD, being a member of the basket- ball team for three years and also captain of it this year. She also runs track. With a busy senior year Dante and Sheila still find time for friends and homework. • Nice personality • Friendly • Active in school • Outgoing YEARBOOK STAFF Keeping Your Memories Alive Chris Wright and John Kuck working on the undergrads Ellen Webster asking some valuable information from advisor Mr. Silvasi. Under the leadership of Dante Burchi and Sue Smith the staff also consisted of Dawn Borowicz and Trish Trantham selling ads. Helen Gurnicz and Keith Inglehart let you know the teachers and the people who work around you. Ellen Webster created the Homecoming section helping you to remember a special of the year. It was probably due to the lack of experience of the young team, which was composed of more than 60° o juniors. They began the year with a strong 17-0 win against Warren Fitzgerald but proceeded to win only one more game for a 2 win, 7 loss record. Jon Thom and Tim Ridinger were both S.M.A. picks while Ed Ridinger received honorable mention. Our tri-captains this year were Terry Sloan, Jeff Clark, and Darrin Mackmin. They combined their efforts to help keep up the Viking's spirit throughout the entire season. The highlight of the year had to be the last game of the year; a rough, brutal match against HP's arch rival Ferndale. To add to the intensity of the game, these two teams met at the Pontiac Silverdome. Although the Viking's lost 18-6, they’ll never forget the thrilling Terry Saylor struggles for extra yardage. experience of doing battle in the Dome. 106 Another defensive man trampled by Chuck Ward. Coach Boughton said the team was on its second year of rebuilding, and if the improvement keeps up, they may have a good shot at being state champions next year. This year the varsity finished 15th in state and 3rd in SMA with a record of 8 wins and 2 losses. The J.V. team finished 1st in SMA with a record of 8 wins and 1 loss. They all had a great season!!! Cheryl Franks and Rose Warrick keeping pace. Cheryl Pratico running a great time. The girls cross country season was very exciting because they had one of their best seasons ever. Their record was 4 wins and 5 losses and they finished 6th in S.M.A. with outstanding performances by Karen Williamson, Brenda Mcleod, and Michelle Goodwin. 116 GIRLS TENNIS Best Season in a Long Time!!! The girls tennis team had an exciting season this year, in spite of their record of one win and six losses. They gained a lot of experience which will help them next year. Their team captain and co-captain were Leda Foster and Ellen Webster, who did a great job in keeping the team together in stressful times, such as switching coaches in the middle of the season. They did quite well for the size of the team, (eight people), and they plan to do much better next year. Ellen Webster playing tough. 118 Roberta McKirdle waiting for the serve. Under the leadership of co-captains Sheila Byrd and Vicki Walmer, the Vikings shot their way to a fine 14 win 5 loss record. They finished third in the S.M.A. which gave them the best year in Viking history! The team produced three all S.M.A. choices: Maria Ahlfield, Kathy Avery, and Jeanette Szydlowski with Vicki Walmer receiving honorable mention. The team was successful this year because of their overall balance. They had a strong offense, which was supplied by quick-thinking Maria Ahlfield and Kathy Avery, and a strong defense provided by Margaret McClatchey and Jeanette Szydlowski, and a great bench, some of which include Sheila Byrd and Linda Hitchcock. All S.M.A. Maria Ahlfield drives around a FomHoi. defender. 1P1 JV BASKETBALL Tough Year for the Coach Esler cheers on his team. Young Lady Vikings Being out-tipped is center Ronnie Sue Carpenter. GIRLS SWIMMING Swimmers Lack Quantity Not Quality The girls swim team started out having a great season but as time went on things changed. They were losing hope as well as meets, and they only won two of ten. They hope to do better in future years, hopefully next year. The girls team practiced hard this year by going to practice early in the morning. Another perfect dive. Mrs. Chasteen discussing important business with her swimmers. Annette Cowell getting set mentally and physically. 124 125 Veronica McCormick doing the breast stroke. BOYS GOLF Putting With Pride The golf team has had a very successful year. They're a small team and most of them are seniors that will be leaving this year. They hope to have a season as good or better than last years season. The wrestling team had another excellent season this year. They finished first in the S.M.A., Districts, and Regionals and then third in the state meet. The four place finishers in the state meet were, Paul Harris (5th), Joe Saferian (3rd), Ed Ridinger (3rd), and Tim Ridinger finished as heavyweight CHAMPION for the second straight year. The toughest meet of the year was against Bedford, when it went down to the very last seconds in the meet, and Tim Ridinger defeated his state ranked opponent C.J. Rimmer, 13-3, to win the meet. The team ended up a disappointing third in the state meet, but for most of the team there’s always next year! Struggling for a strong hold is Rich Pond. Don Agbay making a swift move. Tim Wilds contemplating his next move. 129 State Champ for 2nd Tim Ridinger made history at Hazel Park High School as the only wrestler to take a state championship as a sophomore and again as a junior. Tim has been wrestling for 13 years, and in that time he has acquired over 100 medals to go along with his trophies, plaques, state and national titles. Consecutive Year He owns an outstanding record of 120-7 since junior high and 77-4 since he joined the varsity ranks. Wrestling is not the only sport Tim is great in; he was varsity for football and track in his sophomore year. There’s no doubt about it, Tim is one of the best athletes to attend Hazel Park High School. Ed Ridinger was the only senior on the wrestling team to compete in the state meet. In the 165 pounds weight class he finished third. He was one of the highest scorers in the all important Bedford meet, when he went against Jeff Kaminski and scored 8-2 to help win the meet. Paul Harris also went to compete in the state meet; unfortunately, he didn’t do as well as he had planned. He finished fifth in the 98 pounds weight class. He’s also a junior and will have another shot at going to state next year. Joe Saferian, a junior, competed in the state meet. He finished third in the 105 pounds weight class. He’s been working hard at keeping his weight at 105 pounds for next year, so he can try to compete in the state meet next year and hopefully do better. 131 BOYS SWIMMING Winning Isn’t Everything The boys swim team had an exciting season this year. They won and lost 8 meets, although all of their wins were non-league meets and all their losses were league meets. They are in one of the toughest leagues in Michigan and their record proves it. The team had two captains Dave Maciejewski and James G. Walton, both seniors. The coaches were Mr. Mark Brown and Mrs. Diane Chasteen. Bryan Blanton doing the butterfly. Coach: Mr. Mark Brown. Asst. The Lady Vikings proved to have a strong team this season. Although their record was only 7 wins and 8 losses, it was not reflected by their talent and aggression. The girl’s played in one of the toughest leagues ever and every match was a challenge. The team was led by tri-captains: Linda Hitchcock, Shari Doggins, and Nancy Petracich. Nancy was accopanied by junior Kathy Avery in receiving all S.M.A. honors along with Kris Porter who received honorable mention. Lisa Goodwin punches it over. 135 J.V. The opening tipoff does not display the outcome of this year's home match against H.P.'s arch rival Ferndale. 138 Steve Robbins up and over. Ripping them down is Mike Ellinger. Vikings Clip Eagles Wings! This year’s highlight definitely had to be the Viking’s destruction of their cross-town rivals, Ferndale. It was the first time that Hazel Park beat Ferndale in their past 19 attempts. This upset was a surprise to everyone, especially the Detroit Free Press, who said that Hazel Park wouldn’t be very tough. Of the many outstanding plays in this game, two stood out. The first was Dean Potter's, when he made a steal, and dribbled the length of the court for a Julius Erving-type fingerroll. This was matched only by Thomas Tobia’s swat of a Ferndale guard's attempt for two, which was followed by a standing ovation. The contest was close at halftime - H.P. led 31 -26 - but the Viking’s pulled away in the last half. After Ferndale’s Dellano Harris scored the first basket of the second half, the Vike's ran off 18 of the next 20 points, and the Eagles never recovered. All S.M.A. Jim Males led with 18 points and Steve Robbins was close behind with 17 points. Both Dean Potter and Steve Robbins contributed 5 rebounds to Hazel Park’s dominance under the boards. This year’s team also consisted of captain Dante Burchi and three all S.M.A. honorable mentions; junior center Jim Forsyth, senior forward Steve Robbins, and junior forward Mike Ellinger. 140 Coach Wegner designs a play in a clutch situation. The leaders of this year’s varsity squad were Paul Cervantes and Jeff Clark. They helped march this team through many tight games and close wins. The Viking s always seemed to have a little trouble with their opponents the first time around but came back the second match to regain their respect. Off all twenty-five games this year the Vike s managed to beat every team once, excluding Troy whose pitcher s seemed to elude the cracks of the Viking bats. Paul Cervantes captured all S.M.A. honors along with Jeff Clark and Darrin Tikkanen receiving honorable mention. The younger Viking s are looking forward to a strong team next year with the combination of this year’s J.V. team. 147 JV BASEBALL Big Scores Don’t Add Up... 9-9 Coach Pobursky intently watches. Players like Jim Watson, Domenic Sardo, and Charles Briley maintained our schools reputation of hard-working athletes, and all the juniors are looking forward to a much 151 productive season next year. VARSITY SOFTBALL So Close Yet So Far! Cara Crane's pitching leads the team to victory. 152 The girls softball team had an excellent season. They worked very hard and it paid off. They came so close to being state champions but close doesn't count. They tried hard under the coaching of Ms. Figas but it just didn’t happen. Luckily some of the team are juniors so they can have a second shot at it next year. But key players will be gone next year like Lisa Saferian, Vicki Walmer, and Cara Crane. With a lot of luck and a lot of practice they may have another shot at state next year. Coach: Ms. Figas Vicki Walmer watches the ball as she hits another home run 153 i 155 BOYS TRACK Small But Powerful i f Steve Robbins jumping as far as he can. The track team has improved greatly since last year. They had a record of four wins and four losses which is really great for the size of the team. Not many people came out for track, Ibut the people who did tried very hard under the coaching of Mr. Fulcher [head coach) and Mr. Boughton (asst, coach). The team captains were Karl Zubal and Scott Venable. Steve Robbins who jumped over six feet in the high jump came out for his first year and really helped the team. The team experienced some difficulties in injuries but all in all the team had a great season. 156 Dwayne Moore giving it everything he's got. Tim Ridinger practicing his throws. It was tragic that Tom's life ended before it really began. Tom was a well-known student whose involvements includ- ed: member of the Parker staff, drama, basketball and many other activities. On Class Day, he received many awards, two of which really meant so much, the Max Burchi award and the Quill and Scroll award. He had so much to accomplish, but we will always remember what he did achieve. 253 254 255 mWALS WORTH PUBLISHING COMPANY 256
