DIANE CHASTEEN Junior Class Advisor, Swimm- ing Coach, hut more importantly a friend are a few reasons why this years Vihing Yearhooh is dedicated to Mrs. Diane Chasteen. Along with her joh as Phys. Ed. teacher, Chas” as she is affectionately called hy many students, is also coordinator of homecoming activities, such as king and queens and Field Day. She is also our former gymnastics coach and has also chaperoned many school dances. Chas has spent much of her personal time helping us enjoy our high school years even more. Becoming a new mother also has not stopped Mrs. Chasteen from her giving of time after regular school hours. Truly her unselfish devotion to being a teacher and friend is a labor of love, which, we hope is being returned in some small way on these pages. For all her extra time and dedication, for all the thankless jobs she has done, the 1983 Yearbook is dedicated to Mrs. Diane Chasteen. We also have dances, concerts and plays. Through our activities we learn qualities such as leadership, flexibility, self-confidence, responsibility and the ability to work with others. We build friendships and learn from our experiences. All of these activities help us grow together. 13 Popular Movies An Officer and a Gentleman Cheech and Ch on g Still SmokirP’ E.T. • The Extra Terrestrial Flashdance 48 Hours Gandhi Monty Pyth on’s The Meaning of Life’’ Return of the Jedi Rochy III Spring Breah The Verdict Tootsie Fads' n Fashions Year in In the fall of the 1982-83 school year, Hazel Park started off hy winning the homecoming game and naming Robert Morgan and Kim Craig as homcoming King and Queen. Later in the football season, we were able to watch our home games on the new city cable television system, We watched (now Hall-of-Fame members) Keith Bennett and Tim Ridinger make football history . The system features 3 movie channels, sports channels, city and school access channels, and the ever-popular MTV, a music video station. The video craze took hold in Hazel Park as well as in the rest of the world. For a quarter (or token) you could play arcade favorites like Pac-man, Ms. Pac-man, Defender, Tempest, Frogger or Donkey Kong. Due to the popularity of video games, restaurant arcades like Chuck E. Cheese Pizzatime Theatre, Major Magic's, and Showbiz Pizza Place opened. These restaurants featured video games, and animated characters and small rides for young children. With the accent on good health, many companies introduced caffine-free pops. Many popular people also got into the fitness craze hy writing their own hooks and recording their own aerohicize albums. 14 Viking Country On the national scene, Halloween was virtually ruined for the kids hy rumors and threats of food being tampered with. This scare came soon after the Tylenol epidemic, where someone had put poison in the capsules, resulting in numerous deaths. Automobile genius John DeLorean got busted on a drug charge for supposedly dealing with cocaine to save his car corporation form going bankrupt, and pop-singer Karen Carpenter died after unwillingly starving herself to death due to anorexia nervosa. On the lighter side of things, comedian Eddie Murphy made everyone laugh and Detroit’s Ghoul returned to television with overday,” Eroggie, and second-rate horror film classics late on Friday ni ghts. I he winter of 82-83 was one of the warmest in history, during which Miss Blakely, who taught here for 33 years, got married and retired, and California experienced a great deal of flooding and mudslides. In 1983, many things happened to alter the course of history forever, such as the first successful heart transplant. Barney Clark, the recipent of the heart, died after a significant number of days leaving the medical world with new hope. The economy became a hit more stable with inflation rates slowing for a short while, and the price of gas dipped below one dollar until onset of a tax per gallon which took affect in April. 15 Fads’ n Fashions This Year These Were in 7 Towards spring HPHS dances were temporarily cancelled (or disciplinary measures and the Varsity softball team brought home the regional title. Everyone was trying to he different by wearing bright colors and unusual designs. Among the most popular clothes were: anything ruffled, mini shirts, sweat clothes, tuxedo shirts, how ties, muscle shirts, baggy jeans, and the ever popular polo. Though many of the students at Hazel parb High School loved the absence of the snow, the members of the Shi Club were constantly looking out the window hoping for the snow to come so they could go on their weebly outing to one of the local sbi areas. TLe lack of snow didn't go over very well either with Mr. Richard Rood, advisor. He commented that this was the first time the Shi Club didn't go skiing within the first two weeks of the new year. The other two advisors are Mr. Andy Sikorski and Mr. Roger Snell. However, the Ski Club did get together once for a trip to Boyne Mountain, hut after that it was nothing hut warm, fair weather, so the skis, hoots, and laughs were put away for next year. Tbe Vile es scored two quick touchdowns and were off to a 15-0 lead when they let up and Andover scored two second quarter touchdowns to go ahead. I he Vikes came close so many times in the fourth quarter, hut just could not do it. Uc other was against Seaholm where they lost 27-25, hut outgained the Maples 287-63 yards in total offense and the defense was superb. I he flaws were in the punting game where three punts were blocked, and were turned into touchdowns. Girls Sivi mm i tig A Much Improved Team 76 If awards were given out for the most improved team, tlie girls swim team certainly deserves one. A win-loss record doesn’t accurately tell of all the success of a team. The record hoard was completely remodeled with 9 out of I 1 records broken. 1 hey had 16 girl s on the team, all of whom can tell you swimming is no easy joh, hut throughout the season the girls showed much enthusiasm in spite of their losses. This year’s team had an excellent year. They did not lose a meet and were ranked number one in the state class A polls all year. The Viking matmen placed first in every tournament including the SMA tournament for the eleventh straight year. The only tournament the Vikes did not win was the State Tournament in which they placed fifth. Champion team Redford Catholic Central took the tournament hy heating our team hy only 13 points. The loss of co- captain JoeFisher really hurt the Vikings for the title. Joe broke his foot and ended his season with a 33-1 record. Tim Ridinger, a sophomore, took All-State honors with a first place in the heavyweight division. Harold Brenizer, a senior, placed for the second straight year with a fourth place and Scott Bray, another sophomore, placed sixth. Mr. Jerry Wegner, first year varsity coach, and his Vikings lost 5 games in a row hy a total of 10 points. Their first victory was to Andover to whom they lost the first time hy one point. They won their next game against Seaholm for two in a row. Hustle and scrapping for the hall helped very much in their two wins hut it just wasn't enough to pull off another victory. The last and best year of high school brought us many memories. With Homecoming, came Spirit Weeb and Field Day, in which we defeated the undergrads by pulling together and showing spirit. Our Breabfast came in mid-November and it was at that time we chose our class Motto, Flower, Song, Colors, and for the first time in years, a Class Mascot. Senior Banquet rolled around in April and we recognized some of our classmate with the Mock Elections. Dancing, music, and dinner made that night one for Reminiscing. The elegance and romance of Prom came on May 13. Many of us attended and w'ith the Junior’s help, that night was special. Class Day brou ght laughter and tears, and everyone enjoyed the togetherness and the fun after the ceremony at Bald Mountain. The day we had long awaited came on June 16, when on cable T.V. , we traded in our hooks for a diploma, and we realized that we were Up Where We Belong ”. Although we had some rough times through high school, we will always treasure 1983 a6 our special Senior year. 205 Patrice Knox (president) with some inspiring words for the Class of 83 .
