He transferred to the High School in the fall of 1974 and has taught Government, Consumer Economics, and History since then. Being advisor to the Senior Class and the Board of Directors, and also being in charge of student activities has made the face of Mr. Grant well known to the entire student body. Some of his responsibilities concerning the Senior Class include the planning of the Senior Breakfast, Banquet, and Variety Show, Class Day, and Commencement. Mr. Grant’s time spent at school goes beyond the normal school hours. Announcing for J.V. football games and track meets, working concession stand, supervising dances and other after school activities are some of the many things he does. He works tirelessly for the betterment of the entire student body. For all of the time and effort, the unselfishness and the dedication to the students of Hazel Park High School, we thank Mr. Grant with sincere appreciation foran often thankless job. 12 Sports As athletes, we will always remember our competitive league-the S.M.A. With the likes of Kimball, Ferndale, Southfield, Berkley, and Seaholm, who needs new teams like Troy and Andover? Recall: the boys cross country team, who were nudged out for the league title; Sue Paquette once again an All-Stater; and wrestling sends five to State. We’ll try to forget: ‘‘The Kimball Choke”; the long rides to Andover; the absence of the gymnastics team; and our cold Homecoming. Most of all, we will never forget the feeling of accomplishment when big wins came. 14 15 Varsity Football Facing the enemy! Ciaravino breaks into the open adding to his 7.2 rushing average. 16 John Koczak carries the ball and ends the season with 140 yards and 20 points. Glen Sallee, still part of the team. This year’s varsity football team put up a gallant fight to the finish. Starting the season with thirteen returning players, they were definitely lacking in experience. The year started off slow, but as the season progressed, more team experience was gained. The highlight of the season was the upset win over Dondero, with a score of 22-18. This was the first time in eight years the Vikings had beat the Oaks. The team came on strong at the end of the season, winning two straight which gave them a 3-4 record in the SMA and a 4-5 record overall. Said Coach Dave Eldred, “The value of this season's experiences cannot be measured by the number of wins and losses.” Mike Lynch and Dave Potter show who's Randy Weston out-runs his opponent to add to his 851 yards and boss! 66 points 17 18 Norm Young, escorted by Randy Weston, moves downfield. “What do you expect me to do. Mr. Stagg. catch it with my hands?” asks Brad Sayyae. Tri-caps: D. Saferian. J. Koczak. and R. Weston Mike Warrick helps out Dan Saferian with the tackle. Alright you guys, who’s got the ball? J.V. Footbal Quarterback Billy Connell turns to deliver the hand-off. Chris Lynch and Lyle Hollenbeck move for the ball while Tim Owens watches for the enemy. Coach Otterbacher talks strategy with Harold Brenizer. Doug Gillespie runs for one of six TD’s as Harold Brenizer provides a key block. Robert Morgan finds an open hole against Seaholm. Starting with an opening game against Fitzgerald, the Vikes swept through the SMA, defeating all and losing only one to the Dondero Oaks, 38-14. When asked for a comment, Coach Wegner replied, A lot of dedi- cation and hard work paid off with a league championship.” Chuck Kendzierski looks for the end zone. 21 Girls Varsity Basketball Terri Cotter gets ready to shoot. The 1980 Girls Basketball season could be best explained by saying “effort makes playing rewarding but does not always produce vic- tories.” With five seniors returning, the team played hard throughout the season. All of the players had games where they played well but did not get the consistency to be a big winner. The effort of the players made them aware of the value of atheletics even without stardom. 22 Jean Gibson pulls up as Sandee Wakefield says she's open. Michelle Botaletto stretches for the ball as Shari Elkins and Fran Capps move to help. Annette Sayyae. an All-SMA selection, takes a shot against Oak Park. J.V. Captains Don Tuski and Mark Ernatt. the foundation of a strong team. 26 Ken Trypus This year’s Cross Country team did a fine job upholding their winning reputation. As explained by Coach Boughton, “It was a very exciting cross country season!! We were but a tenth of a second away from an undefeated dual meet season.” Not only were there individual improvement but also the team’s effort became stronger; building the “cream of the crop” to be the best persons they can be. Coaches Boughton and Fulcher are glad to see the team’s improvement. Steve Zervas. Scot Clave. John McCann. Girls Cross Country Coach Boughton timing his runners. Belinda Westergaard, Rhonda Krassa, and Robin Warnez working hard at practice. After last year’s state per- formance, this year’s girls cross country team had a difficult task ahead of them. Losing three valuable seniors didn’t help matters though the girls did their best. As Coach Fulcher explains, We had Captains Linda Gemmell and both a young inexperienced and experienced squad. Basically, three veterans led the way. Our attitude was honest. It was an exciting and challenging year-tradition is being established.” Sue Paquette with a victory smile. Above: Diane Coronado, Jill Wyatt and Lisa Thompson practicing on improving. Lett: All-State Runner Sue Paquette. Below: Lynda Brown and Lisa Gregory 30 Golf The Viking Golf team had its successes during the season with victories over both Highland Park and Oak Park and a win over Pontiac Northern. Within the team there were the new members and the experienced players who produced a well-rounded team, which also builds a strong team for next year. Earl Thom, one of the more experienced players, had the lowest average score and shot the lowest score in 7 of the season’s matches with a 36 against both Clawson and Oak Park. Without players like Earl the team would not have been as competitive. Below: I know that '@ ! ball is in here somewhere! says Ken Mcllvride. Girls Tennis Lett: Patty Murphy. This year was a learning and growing season for the girls on the tennis team. New members and the lack of members were ; major factors of an unproductive season. Adjusting to a new coach also added to the difficulties although the girls held tough, showing courage and class in every situation, to prove they were true Vikings. The 1980 girls swimming season was fun for the girls even though they had a bad season. It was the first year back after last year’s layoff. Mindy Park displays her ace serving form. The Viking Volleyball team was full of enthusiastic players who brought on exciting moments of play throughout the season. They all worked to improve on basic skills and use their talents to learn new plays. As they did this, they began to learn what it really takes to be a winning team; to dig deep inside yourself and bring out that will to win; to do your best for yourself, your teammates, your coach and school. Sometimes the scores didn’t always show it, Shari Elkins plays the ball as Annette Sayyae assists her. though every match developed them as volleyball players. After each match they went over mistakes and continued to improve as competitive athletes. They learned from the losses just as much as the wins, as they drilled together as a team. They built up their confidence in themselves and in the team. Watch out for the coming volleyball teams; they have what it takes and they’re ready for fast aggressive play. The varsity basket- bail team had all it takes to be a winner this year, effort and dedication, but they just could'nt seem to get it all to- gether. The boys opening game was against Belle- ville, and although there was a lot of good ball handling and team work, they lost 57-49. On February 24 the Vikes fought a tough battle with Troy and came out victorious with one- point win over the Colts, 58-57. They ended the season on a winning note by defeating the Kimball Knights, 55-48. Paul Thompson shows his winning form. Scott Marvin sets up for 2! Don Tuski drives hard around his opponent. The J.V. basketball team had its ups and downs this year. Starting the season off with a loss to Belleville, they came back strong with a win against Warren Fitzgerald in double over-time. Things were looking good for the Vikes until their encounter with Andover. They lost a heart-breaking game to the Barons by a score of 61-56, which by the way, also went into double OT. But later in the season the Vikes avenged their first loss to Andover by beating the Barons, 59-50. Reach for that ball. Bill Tucker! Boys Swimming The boys swim team had a tough time this past season, but in the end much progress was made. Their improvement was the result of hard individual work and continuous team effort. The season started slowly but they all pulled together, encouraging one another. Coach Brown’s instructions also helped greatly as the swimmers developed their skills, which showed in the meets. By the end of the season the swimmers were really giving it their all. Look for more good things from this talented team in the up-coming seasons. Kent Takacs. The Vikettes were again state champs and fifth in the nationals. They were always around to entertain us at sporting events, along with the band, majorettes, and flag girls. The cheerleaders and Pep Club helped support our teams. We were entertained by the professionalized theatrics, symphonic bands, and harmonious choirs. Don’t forget the dances sponsored by BOD and other organizations that brought us all together. 84 85 This year... ...there was an assassination attempt made on the Pope and were released after 444 days of captivity...John Lennon was killed in Atlanta, GA...Bobby Sands and followers starved oil in the Mideast. More and more this year, girls were wearing dresses. President Ronald Reagan...the 52 American hostages in Iran murdered...at least 28 black children have been abducted and themselves to death for the IRA cause...there was a surplus of With every passing year, we all expect changes and this year was no different. It seems as if Calvin Klein, Jordache, Bon Jour, Gloria Vanderbilt, Sassoon and Chardon made millions off of students who rushed out for their $40 designer jeans. If our pants weren’t skin tight, they were baggy”. If we weren’t dressing preppie with straight legs and pointed shoes, cowboy boots, fringed shirts and hats converted us to the western look which was a nationwide fad. Hairstyles varied from the feathered look to perms. Some girls dressed their hair up a bit with French braids, but most kept it simple. Guys mostly kept their hair cut just above the collar. After school activities were pretty common. We were either rushing home to see what would happen to Luke and Laura on General Hospital or we’d be at a sports event. We were so caught up on daytime soap operas that they started having them at night. It was wondered nationwide, “Who Shot J.R.?” from the series Dallas. What will happen now that Jock Ewing (Jim Davis) died? Other popular television programs that we watched were 87 I---------------------------- Taxi, M A S H, Benny Hill, Real People and That’s Incredible. Full run movies such as The Muppet Movie, Close Encounters of the Third Kind, Superman, The Shining, and Smokey And The Bandit II were offered on HBO and IT, but ON topped them all with Fright Night. For those who weren’t into TV or movies, there was always WLLZ, WABX, or WRIF. Disco was definitely fading as country music began hitting the top of the charts. Eddie Rabbit’s I Love a Rainy Night” remained the number one hit for several weeks and everyone liked the Rovers’ “Wasn’t That a Party.” Changes in government came when Ronald Reagan was elected as president over Jimmy Carter. His proposed economic plans will hopefully work out since the nation’s inflation was at 12% at one time. The economy has been so bad that the automobile industry recorded all-time low sales and in Michigan, unemployment was very high. Gasoline was around $1.35 a gallon for unleaded gas but recently OPEC put a freeze on their prices for six months. Although the economy was suffering so, we were still able to pay Tiger Steve Kemp $600,00 for a season. The Lion’s Billy Sims wasn’t exactly getting peanuts since he was our star player and hope for the future. This year, the New York Islanders won the Stanley Cup, the Boston Celtics won the NBA, the University of Michigan won the Rose Bowl and the Oakland Raiders won the Super Bowl. Although our lives were changing steadily, our stomaches weren’t. We still ate at McDonalds, Burger King, Arby’s and Taco Bell Favorite lingos of the year included sped, zero, lowlife and twit. Field Day was full of excitement as the competition between classes began. Each class battled their way through the tug-o’-war, the tunnel race, the pie eating contest and the barrel dress. Everyone was full of spirit, but the juniors came through to win the Spirit Pot. After the battle, came the announcement of the 1980 Homecoming King and Queen. The deserving winners—John Koczak Sue Pearce. 99 1980 Homecoming King and Queen John Koczak is thought of as the active runabout in a varsity jacket. He is the type of guy who stays involved in many activities and helps out in whatever he can. John represents and shows pride in Hazel Park by partici- pating in sports, the Senior Class, and student government. Besides just being active, John has another great quality - his personality, and we’re proud to say he’s our king! Sue Pearce’s bright smile and friendly attitude builds her popularity and friendships. Like John, Sue takes part in many school activities. She's a member of the varsity cheerleading squad and the financial committee in student government. Although Sue keeps herself active, she finds time to plan her future. She wants to attend Central Michigan University to study broadcasting. Later in the year at a clinic in Rochester, Michigan, Mary Beth Wilson and Sherry Boyd also qualified to try out for the team. A few projects have been selling candy hearts for friends and sweethearts on Valentine’s Day and they also sold flowers the first day of spring. The Language Club also plans field trips for the end of the year. These people are missing out on alot of fun and excitement! The Science Fiction group, advised by Mr. Dave Fobear, goes on many field trips during the year. The group has seen such movies as “Final Countdown”, “Hanger 18”, and of course, “The Empire Strikes Back”. Going on such field trips upholds the interests of the students. The officers this year are getting groups together to play Science Fiction War Games. This also helps promote interest in the club. Jeff Darcy Science Fiction Club Officers. We learned to look through microscopes without getting “ring around the eye”, to know the use of the buttons of a calculator, to make up footnotes for a term paper, and that the jams weren’t too good in the language classes. Getting along with the teachers wasn’t always the easiest, but the “brown-nosers” always seemed to find ways. If they weren’t answering every question from the teacher, they were the only one with their homework done. All and all, the teachers did do their best to prepare us for the outside world. 140 Principals and Secretaries - School Operation, Administration Is In Their Hands The administrators of our school are the bases of the operation of our school. Pictured from left are Mr. Thomas Purdy, assistant principal; Mr. John Noud, principal; and Mr. Loren Bloetscher, assistant principal. Each has his own responsibil- ities around the school. Mr. Noud teaches an algebra class, and has responsibilities of the hiring and supervision of the teachers, the conduct of the students, the upkeep of the school, the budget, and he substitutes sometimes when a teacher is absent. Mr. Purdy is responsible for taking care of the tardies, absences, attendance, enrollment, and writing out excuses. Mr. Bloetscher takes care of scheduling, registration, and the enrollment at the beginning of school. They keep things organized. The secretaries also have a major role in the school's organization. They take care of the written work, filing, typing, and keep the students records, schedules and endless informa- tion in place. The administrators work together to keep the school in shape so we know where we’re goin'; what we’re doin'; and where we’ve been. 142 Top: Mrs. Dutkiewicz. The sophomores had one of the largest classes in a long time, and the juniors weren’t far behind. The juniors were able to take spirit week with the sophomores second, due largely to their strong size. The sophomores were successful in junior varsity sports. The J.V. football team were league champs. The girls J.V. basketball and volleyball teams made commendable showings, along with the wrestling and boys basketball. Some even participated in varsity play. The juniors received their first taste of varsity sports, and handled it well. 180 181 Allen. J. Allen. J. Allen. R. Anderson. S. Asaro. P. Asbury. J. Askins. Ed Greaves Elbow Ping-Pong? 199 Seniors Everyone said the Senior Class of ‘81 had no spirit and didn’t care about anything having to do with school. It was shown by placing last in the first spirit week and the cancellation of the Senior Variety Show. The class size of less than 300 did hurt, but the seniors did pull together when the banquet and prom were doubtful and made them memorable. The second field day was a runaway victory for the seniors. Regardless of the talk, the Senior Class of '81 did provide the leadership and example for the future classes to build on. 200 Above: Dr. Frampton Left: Robert Sanborn Tracey Mercier. Rhonda Brecht. So many roads to choose, We start out walking and learn to run. And yes, we’ve just begun. Sharing horizons that are new to us, Watching the signs along the way, Talking it over, just the two of us, Working together day to day, together, together. And when the evening comes, we smile.
