Mr. Thomas Purdy, always there with a smiling face, even if you are in trouble for skipping classes. If you’ve ever gotten sick or had to go home for some reason, he was always there to help you out. Mr. Purdy has involved himself with Hazel Park High School since he came here in 1955. Starting as a social science teacher, he then moved on to teach biology. In 1963, he became Assistant Principal in charge of attendance. From 1955 until 1962, Mr. Purdy coached varsity football with Mr. Tom Krupa and Mr. Chuck Skinner. In 1957 the football team went undefeated for the first time in Hazel Park High School’s history. Not only did Mr. Purdy coach football, but he also coached tennis from 1955 until 1966. In 1963, the tennis team went undefeated and won the first annual Oakland County Tennis Tournament. He is still a tennis enthusiast, and often helps both the boys and girls tennis teams with practice. For all your extra work and dedication, for times when you went beyond your call of duty, for your easy-going nature which makes it so easy to walk into your office with a problem, the 1980 Viking yearbook staff dedicates the 46th edition of the Viking yearbook to Mr. Thomas Purdy, THANK-YOU! ii Mr. Noud, principal Mr. Purdy, assistant principal Mr. Bloetscher, assistant principal Principals and Secretaries — What Would We Do Without Them? There were a lot of fun activities such as the tricycle race, the pie-eating contest, and many others. All three classes put up a good fight for first place, but the seniors won it again. Then, when the fun was finished, everyone started to get excited about the announcement of the 1979 Homecoming King and Queen. The lucky winners -- Jim Stuef and Kim Bing! The team really got it all together after the Dondero game and all opponents from then on had to watch out! Next they met the Shamrocks of Catholic Central - who later became the State Champs - and gave them the toughtest fight of the season, but lost 13-0. This year's team exceeded all expectations and once again maintained Hazel Park’s fine reputation in football. The Vikings domi- nated the league, and swept the SMA cham- pionship for the fifth time in the past seven years. Then it was statebound for the mighty Vikes! The stage was set for an exciting rematch between the Southfield Blue Jays and the Vikings, in the state quarter-finals. The Vikes came out of Pontiac Wisner Stadium victo- rious—with a score of 21- 6. 80 S.M.A Champs - State Semi-Finalists Oh — What a Great Season!! 82 Quarterback P. Gebhart back for another T.D. Varsity Basketball— Seniors Lead The Way For Young Vikes When the 1980 Varsity Basketball season started the team looked very promising. For some reason, things did not turn out the way we had hoped. Perhaps one reason for the lack of success was the fact that there were few experienced players, and many young players were forced to step into key positions. This year’s record does not necessarily indicate the quality of the team because there were many close games that could have gone either way. Junior guard Ed Diaz set the school record with 96 assists! Dan Salamango, leading scorer with 278 points, out leaps the opponent! 106 Bill McCarrell driving hard! Senior Breakfast- Seniors Stop for For his most appreciated help, the Senior Class gives Mr. Grant a standing ovation. Breakfast Along the Winding Road This year the Senior Breakfast was a great success, with 70 percent of the Senior Class in attend- ance. “SENIOR BEGIN- NINGS,” was the 1980 breakfast theme - an appropriate name, because this was the first official time that the 1980 seniors assembled as a class. The breakfast was not only a time for the seniors to get together and have a little fun, it was a time to look to our peers and say, “We had to work hard, but we’re finally at the top.” The breakfast was a great way to start the seniors off on their last lap on the road to graduation. 211 Sinda s4f.
