SENIORS 5 1978 Viking Yearbook Staff Proudly Dedicates the 1978 Yearbook to Mr. Tom Stephens Helpful and a friend to all students, best describes Mr. Tom Stephens. Tom, as he is known to all students, is a member of the evening custodial staff at H PH S, but his value to the school goes beyond that of his custodial duties. There is hardly a student around who has been in the high school in the evening who didn't need to have a door opened, or help in finding some important item in the school, or advice on how to handle a particular project. Tom was the man to find, and he was the one who did it with a friendly smile and a helpful attitude. Tom is a graduate of Hazel Park High School and an HP resident. During the six years he has been working at the high school, he has made things easier for those needing his assistance. In addition, Tom has been an avid fan and booster of HP sports through his activities in the Quarterback Club. For his devoted interest in the students and activities at HP, we think Mr. Stephens is a very special man, and we are proud to dedicate the 1978 Viking yearbook to Tommy. 7 Debbie Eder gains valuable yardage for the Undergrads. That question is answered at the end of Spirit Week. Spirit Week is the week before Homecoming created by the Pep Club to get the school’s spirit going by stirring up competition bet- ween the sophomores, juniors, and sen- iors. Each day of Spirit Week a different event was scheduled Monday was Hat Day, Tuesday was Stuffed Animal, Wednesday was Girl-Hush Day, Thursday was Dress-up Day, and Friday was Maroon and Gray Day. The number of people participating in these events was tallied up along with the points won in field day and a winner was determined. The winner? The seniors. Ralph Bickford. AUNT Charlie's Aunt was written by Brandon Thomas in the early 1890's. It was also performed for the first time in the I890's. It is a play that is now done the most world wide today. Hazel Park added it to all of the good plays they have done in the past under Director Jim Baird. This is Jim Baird's first year here and he has put together a very good production. Charlie's Aunt was performed on November 17, 18, and 19 after only four weeks of rehearsal. This play usually takes six to eight weeks to prepare, but Jim Baird and the cast put it together in only four weeks. Jeff Batchelder portrays Brassett the Butler. The first trophy they won was at the Oakland University Summer Camp where they won first place for best performance. The second trophy they won was at the Troy Daze Parade where they won first place in the marching division. Then the Invitational, where they won first place for Best Captain, Best Inspection, and Best Performance. Upon winning first place trophies at Rochester, they qualified to travel to Ohio for National Competition. The competition was held at Wright State University where they won first place for Best Inspection. Thus the Vikettes end their season by winning a total of six trophies. Class of ‘79 103 WEST SIDE STORY 104 Tony (Dave Everett) talks to Maria (Tina DiDomizio) about their future plans. West Side Story was added to the long list of musicals done here at Hazel Park. This musical was particularly hard because of all the choreography that had to be done, but was handled impressively by Jeff LaPere and Jean McKiddie. This musical was well received by all who went to see it. Bernardo (Jeff LaPere) pays no attention to what I t. Shrank (Dennis Repkc) has to say. The two gang leaders decide on a place to rumble. 105 The Jets catch Bernardo (Jeff LaPerc) off guard and surround him for the kill. Rosalia (Maria Crifasi) and Anita (Marie Harlick) sing about the ups and downs of America. 106 Bernardo (Jeff LaPere) talks to Anita (Marie Harlick) about going to the war council. Jets vs Sharks Rif (Jeff Batchelder) and Diesel (John Weilcr) hold Action (Dennis Holcomb) back from attacking Lt. Shrank (Dennis Repke). Tony (Dave Everett) and Maria (Tina DiDomizio) sing a love song to each other. PePe (Mark Tamura) and Consuclo (Paula Winters) move out at the dance. 107 Bernardo (Jeff LaPerc) finally talks back to Lt. Shrank (Dennis Repke). Succeeding ex-coach Mr. Chuck Skinner, who is now head coach at Birmingham Seaholm, is Mr. Dave Eldred. Many wondered if Hazel Park would have a chance at another SMA title with a new coach, but that question was answered when the Vikings beat Seaholm by a score of 25 to 6. The championship was on the line, and our gridders pulled through with another victory. They ended up their season with a 7 and 2 record overall and 4 and 1 SMA, which brought them an SMA co-championship. Our Viking team is coming through; they have brought defeat to you. 131 J. V.
