It's a time of your life that will find you alternately happy and sorrowful. A time when you will witness changes in others and changesj within yourself. I A time when you will he faced with the decision of either rising up to the challenge of building your future; 5 Or sitting pacifly back waiting for someone else to do the job.' Grow and develop during this period Build and live for your dreams. Laugh freely and let none destroy your ability to do so. Indulge often in the special friendships you may have. Most crucial of all live! Live while you're able. f S Vv Look back in later years with a smile upon your lips ratherAy than tears upon your cheeks. y Move in unison with the cycle- 2 Mrs. Skomski— She Brings Out the Best in Us Mrs. Skomski is somewhat of an unsung heroine around Hazel Park High School. She has done more than her share around this school in her past 20 years of teaching Physical Education on and off, but few people recognize this fact. Mrs. Skomski was the original founder of Vikettes in the fall of 1957. She has coached many sports and clubs including girl's tennis, basketball, the Swan Club, the fencing team, and this year she even took on the boy's swimming team. She is recognized as being one of the better physical education teachers in the area. She is a total disciplinarian; she expects quality and dedication in whatever is being done, she expects the best. It is this quality that brings out the best in us. Because she has gone above and beyond the normal demands of a teacher, we are dedicating this year's yearbook to Mrs. Donna Skomski. 5 u I j Wonieconiing I n V. Sharp D. Shenk S. Koss R. Wilson P. Davids One of the most exciting times of the school year is the annual Field Day activities. This was the twenty-first Home- coming for the queens and the fourth for the kings. We started out with Spirit Week, which ran from October 25-29. On Monday each class participated in building a monument of their class spirit on the Common walls, where during lunch the classes gathered to show their spirit and excitement. Also it was hat day. On Tuesday everyone, almost everyone, brought a stuffed animal and carried it around all day. Wednesday was girl hush day, and each girl wore a paper football. If they were caught talking to a boy or girl, that person could take their football. However that night, the girl's caught up on all their screaming and yelling at the annual Powder Puff football game. It was a tuff game with the undergrads defeating the seniors 6-0. In the midst of all the yelling was the introduction of the Homecoming Honies. 6 fop 25 On Thursday everyone walked around with their clothes inside out, and Friday was s. simat maroon and gray day. The agenda was doubled this year as many more bright new ideas were successfully added to the list of events. The week of school before Homecoming was designated as Spirit Week - an event very popular at other neighboring schools, but ordinarily not practiced at HP. During this week fierce rivalry took place between the sophomores, juniors, and seniors to determine which class had more spirit. For each day of the week an event was scheduled. Monday was declared Hat Day. Second hour each teacher could be seen tallying up the numbers of toppers present in their classroom. Tuesday was Stuffed Animal Day, and students were accompanied is throughout the day by their favorite cuddly friend. In some cases the stuffed friend was as large as the student! Wednesday was Girls Hush Day; Each girl was given a paper football at the beginning of the day, and if by some small miracle she was able to retain her football till the end of of the day, her 6th hour teacher chalked one up for her class. Thursday, perhaps the most extraordinary event of all took place, the Ping Pong lottery. A helicopter was hired to unload hundreds of numbered ping pong balls on waiting students. Each student reached for all the balls he could, hoping he selected one with the lucky number, for if he had, he would receive a gift! Friday, the last day of Spirit Week, was the traditional Maroon and Gray Day, featuring an afternoon assembly, the grand finale. Overall, the obvious enthusiasm and response on the part of the students and teachers were overwhelming. 20 21 Dr. Frampton Assistant Superintendent changing over to Superintendent Dr. Newberry deputy superintendent, of Ha cl Park School district. i9?7 School Board. During his years of service he has gone above and beyond the calls of his duties, not only for his many different positions but also as a Hazel Park citizen. Dr. Webb started his career at the young age of twenty as a teacher and has since filled a variety of positions including that of a school principal, city councilman and business administrator and his job for eighteen years as superintendent of H.P. schools. As of January 31, 1976 Dr. Webb's retirement will have become effective. As he is leaving the administration of Hazel Park he will be greatly missed, but many will still have him as a neighbor, because he plans to remain in Hazel Park with his wife and son. The setting of a small Salem town (1692) came to life as false accusations, and cries of witchery permeated the air. Football Season Throughout the season, J.V.'s spirit kept them going. As the season went on, they realized their potential ability for the following year. Since the team was made up of sophomores, it was safe in assuming that many fine players will be coming up to Varsity next year. Their improvement throughout the season may have seemed small, but it was very promising. When the going was rough, the mighty Vikings kept their chins up, their shoulders back, and walked proudly. They knew they had done the best they could to end the season with a record of 2 wins, 5 losses, and 2 ties. Watch Out! D. Sanders is coming through! Brad Beshears Ken Calvert Doug Sanders Our J.V. They had improved in many ways but began to realize that their fine opponents had also. After their first eight meets they became involved in a tri-meet coming out with first place. The team accepted the Ypsilanti Invitation, placing fifth out of six schools. The thought of losing became a very strong realization. And they struggled through many fine meets. Performing his best breast stroke is D. Paolucci. We hope to see more interest from spectators for the boys show much promise. And with the kind of fine coaching they will be receiving there is much success ahead. The loss of our only 2 seniors (captains) means much sadness but still anticipation for the year to come. It was a night of slicking your hair back and puting the pony tails in. The main attraction was the choosing of the queen of the hop. This year's queen was none other than Donna Campbell with first runner-up Sue Simat, second runner-up Becky Bryant. The other 3 candidates were Cindy Andrzejewski, Halyna Meronek, and Debbie Gosk. Last year's record for cramming people into the phone booth was 18 kids. This year's new world record was 19. Tuski received the Lions Club Award As another Award Assembly comes and goes, there are many awards given out. There were awards like the Lions Club Award, Science Awards, Band and Choir Awards, and many others. You cannot say that one is more important than the other because to the person receiving it, its really important. This day comes around once a year, and thats when we recognize all those people who have done something outstanding to receive that special recognition. Awards are special and thats why we have that special day to let you know who are the special people around our school. 190 ASSEMBLY Above: M. Finney. J. Strata, and L. Year after year the Senior Banquet is an ultimate success and this year was no exception. The smiling faces and the feeling of sentiment present that night were excellent indicators of the mood of love and togetherness that filled us all. However, unlike all the other years, eyes were not as misty - the reason being time could not be spared because everyone was busy dancing to the music of Eastwood Parke and socializing. In years to come this occasion above all others will certainly have left it's imprint on our memories. 201 PAUL K. ADAMS SHIRLEY M. ADAMS CHERYL L. ADIMARO JAMES I. ADKINS STEPHEN M.
