After spending an enjoyable year at Lacey, we were transferred to the high school. As eighth graders we had to take all sorts of insults from the upper classmen, who laughed at the way we scurrled to our classes, clutching our books tightly. We couldn't walt until we passed, so that we, in turn, could dish it out for a change. In addition to having our own lockers and a modern gym, we now had a swimming pool and an up-to-date li- brary, more enjoyable classes, and a representative in the student council, Chris Powell, who has since left us. In 1947, we passed into the ninth grade. Now we were full-fledged high school students, and thus we embark- ed on the happlest period in our lives, our high school days. For the first time, we were glven the right to elect our own class officers. To make sure that we got off to a good start, we elected Alex Frlendly Philosopher Novitsky as our President, J lm English as our Vice-President, Myrna McConnell as our Secretary, but for reasons beyond Myrna's control she could not continue as secretary so Charlotte Taylor took over her duties, and Josephine Fantauzzo as our Treasurer. We now had Doyle McIntosh representing us in the student council. Cora Jean Moore and Doyle McIntosh were chosen as King and Queen of our class that same year. Dora Miller started out on her long and illustrious career as a debator. In the coming years, much fame and glory were to come to our school as a result ot Dora's fine performances. In the fleld of acting, a few of the more ambitious members of our class gotlan early start on their acting careers by getting parts in both of the plays in that year, 'Ann of Green Gables' and 'Tiger House . We entered the first semester with our class officers being as follows: President, Alex Novitzsky, Vice-Pre- sident, Jim English, Secretary, Charlotte Taylor, Treasurer, Josephine Fantauzzo, and representing our class ln the student council were Doyle Mclntosh, Howard Wiley, and Betty Ladd. 'I Remember Mama' was the play that many of us enjoyeddurlng the flrst semester. 'lwelve persons from our class were ln the cast of this play and many were working behind the scenes. Yes, our class was active . As members of the various clubs, in athletics, and ln schoolwork our class strove to do the best lt could. One of our class activities was that of collecting dues of ten cents a week to help us in the future. As the football season passed, we knew that the varsity football team had done it again--for the third straight year they went through the season without winning one game. Although this meant that our class, during its high school stay, had not seen a varsity football team win a game--we still looked with hopeful eyes to the following year. Al Ravenscroft was then elected captain of the Cross Country Team. The patient and capable advisors for our class at that time were, Miss. Tltsworth, chairman, Miss. Davis, Miss. Schllchtman, Mrs. Moore, Miss. Oberman, and Mr. Clute. Dora Miller represented our class on the varsity debate team. Doyle Mclntosh and Gloria Jackson were king and queen of our class, that year. During that second semester we saw an upper classman, John Katsoulas, win a S2500 scholarship in the Mich- lgan l-llgh School Forensic Association contest. In order to improve our class scholastically, the homerooms had a contest from April to the end of the semest- er. Mlss Davls's homeroom won. For the second semester the play that most of saw was John' loves Mary with seven people from our class in the cast, and as usual many classmates worked behind the scenes. Representing Hazel Park at the Third National Dramatic Arts Conference, which was held at the University of Indiana, were four members from our class: Bernice Pinchon, Ranette Sechler, Jim English, and Alex Novitz- sky. Yes, summer was here and we now realized that we had come to the halfway mark and prepared ourselves to go the final half. When school began again in September we had lost many of our classmates, who had turned the ripe age of 16 ' and quit school to start out on their own. Our officers were Terry Rowland, President, Tome Carrothers, Vice- Presldent, Gloria Jackson, Secretary, and Josephine Fantuazzo, Treasurer. Our student council representatives were Doyle McIntosh, Howard Wiley, and Betty Ladd. To keep us on the straight and narrow road we voted Ml s. Tltsworth, Miss.Weller, Mrs. Wllllck, Miss. Lombard, and Mr. Rlpmaster as our advisor. Miss. Schllchtman re- placed Mr. Ripmaster later. Members of our class took part ln everything that came our way. In Varsity Sports our lettermen were: Jim Butcher, Doyle Mclntosh, Jerry Sutinen, Don Bowman, Tom Carroth ers, Terry Rowland, and Bob Plouffe ln football, Al Falcone, Jim Butcher, and Doyle Mclntosh ln basketball. Bob Waldron, Howard Wiley, Jlm Butcher, and Bob Pouffe in baseball. Mark Moehring, A1 Ravenscroft, 'Art Richards, and Howard Wiley in track. George Mohyla, and Jim Ainsworth in swimming, Al Ravenscroft in cross country, and Doyle Mclutosh in golf. Dora Mlller and Jim English were our debators. As for dramatics, well, that was even a greater collection of names and faces. In the play You Can't Take It With You, Charlotte Taylor had the lead as a My friend Irma type mother, Jim English was her equally loveable husband, and their children, were tow entirely different types. Bernice Pinchon was the charming, sensible one of the family, while Ranette Sechler, layed aside her pride to be a ballet dancer. The spring play, was a. horse of . at sash--. A I a different color. with J im English, Ranette Sechler, and Bernice Plnchon, portrayed the leading characters, while Theresa Kanlarz, Jerry Sutinen, Alex Novltzsky, Joan Jackson, Betty Ladd, Bob Waldron, Bill Brook, and Mary Ann Bacalla took part also. This doesn't include the important back-stage workers who get things ln order so we could put on the plays. The National Thesplan Society was lnltlated that year to further dramatlcs in Hazel Park. The first officers were Charlotte Taylor, President, Ranette Sechler, Secretary, and Bernice Plnchon, Treasurer. Who sald thls lsn't a woman's world. A few of our classmates were initiated into the National Honor Society. There were Alex Novltzsky, Bernice Plnchon, Dora Miller, Doyle Mclntosh, Howard Wiley, Betty Ladd, and Josephine Fantauzzo. Our Coronation Ball was a success. The gym was beautifully decorated. The Klng and Qleen of the school and incldently our class King and Queen, were Dlerdre Batchelder and Al Falcone. The June Prom was held at the Dearborn Inn and everything was perfect. Even though it rained, lt was qulte comforting for the girls to know that they had someone to turn to lf they were struck by lightening. Rilth Bllbrey, a 1950 June graduate, and Ranette Sechler sang during thejntermisslon, and Alex Novltzsky dld a skit. Juanita Grace was Dalsey Mae at the Sadie Hawkins dance which was given by the 1951 January Class that year, too. The generally suddessful year came to a close, but there was regret in our hearts for a fellow classmate, Edel Perkins, who passed away the summer before, and Mrs. Sink, a member of the faculty, who taught most of us our 8th grade math, who passed away during Thanksgiving Vacatlon. We were really growing up, some of the girls even became engaged. Our officers for the twelfth grade are: Terry Rowland, President, Tom Carrothers, Vice-President, Gloria Jackson, Secretary, and J osephlne Fantauzzo, Treasurer. Student Council representatives are Howard Wiley, President, Doyle Mclntosh, Vlce-President, Betty Ladd, Secretary, and J lm English and Richard Moxley. Our class advisors this year were: Mis. Tltsworth, Miss. Schalm, Mrs. Wllllck, and Mr. McCloy and Mr. Lutkus. We started our senior year with thoughts about graduation. Everybody was thinking about the class trlp, which took place on May 27-30. We journeyed by boat to Mackinaw Island. This year the senlor girls started the Girls Athletls Assoclatlon with Betty Goldtrap, President, Yvoxme Boyd, Vice-President, Evelyn Dwyer, Treasurer, Juanita Weber, Secretary. ' During our senior year our football team won its first game ln four and a half years. The lettermen of this year were: Jim Butcher, Doyle Mclntosh, Tom Carrothers, Don Bowman, Howard Wiley, A1 Ravenscroft, Mark Moehrlrg, Terry Rowland, Bob Waldron, Al Falcone, Blll Robb, George Mohyla, Alex Novltzsky, Jim Ainsworth, Jerry Sutlnen, Art Richards, and Chuch McGhee. Tennis and wrestling, new sports, have been added this year. Our class did very well scholastically wlth Betty Ladd and J osephlne Fantauzzo leaving all A records. We have 14 persons ln the National Honor Society. They are: Doyle McIntosh, President, Howard Wiley, Vice president, Gall Corser, Secretary, Bernice Plnchon, Treasurer, Dora Miller, Alex Novitzsky, Betty Ladd, Yvonne Boyd, Jeanne Deleruyelle, Cynthia Stone, Carol Mitchell, Fred Gomez, Mark Moehrlng, and Ranette Sechler. Betty Ladd and Jeanne Deleruyelle were chosen Co-Editors of the Vlklng. Assisting on the staff are: Angelo DeSantls, Art Editor, George Dzendzel, Assist, Fred Gomez, Photographer, Gall Corser, Society Edltor, Yvonne Boyd, Sports Editor, Valerie Palm, Proof-Reader, Cynthia Stone, and Ann Zarkls, Copywrlters, Katherine- Welgandt, Sales Manager, Alberta Bubar and Janette Anderson, 'lyplstsg Bill Brook, Ralph Powell, Advertising, with Miss. Schalm and Mr. McCloy as advisors. Our King and Queen for the Coronation Ball were, Terry Rowland and Joan Jackson, with Terry being chosen the the King of the school. Several members of our class participated ln the school plays of this year, these plays were, Smllln' Thru ' and A11My sons. ' Dora Miller, Ken Courtney, Tom Carruthers, Blll Brook and Jlm English were the debators this year. And so we end our last year of high school wlthour class motto, We finlsh to begin. by Ed Kraft Alex Novltzsky Francis Stevenson Ranette Sechler WN Ar H45 ACOL CAN W Ay B1mK wnm... .56 .
