FOLK DANCING Folk danclng a very enjoyable rec reatlon has been a part of the extra curricular activities for eleven years Th1s fascmating group play was mtroduced to the puplls by Frank Smith of Berea College It has been carrxed on under the dxrectxon of Pryce Tutt who has had tralnmg at the john C Campbell Country Dance School Berea Kentucky and The Country Dance Society New York City The group meets twice a week to enjoy Engllsh and American dances Danish traditional dancing Morris and Sword dancing and play party games This is a noncompetltwe rec reat1on nn which the students who avall them selves of its fun and trammg find themselves well prepared for participation m college and youth groups everywhere The dance which IS the oldest form of human expression IS rich in trad1t1on and IS as defm1te a part of our cultural hentage as the great prose and poetry of the ages MUSIC DEPARTMENT Long after xt was heard no more The Glee Club w1th 30 members meets each Frnday They presented a cantata entxtled Tmsel and Gold at Christmas time and also a cantata pageant at Easter One of the outstandmg programs of community interest of year IS the Spring Music Festwal given by the combined choruses from several county hlgh schools Two classes a week ln Public School Music are held for the seventh and elghth grades and the Freshmen class in high school The seventh and eighth grades have also organized a Harmonica Band Private lessons ln volce and pxano are given to from fifteen to twenty students each year Two recxtals are gwen each year One recital was given ln playlet form entitled The Obhgxng Clock another one a muslcal style show was gwen by the Home Economxcs and Music departments combmed I I . . . i . . BASKETBALL Basketball is about the only mterscholastlc sport we have at Hazel Green Academy so when basketball time rolls around everyone takes ln terest This year we elected three cheerleaders Edna Nlckell Laverne Castle and Dorls Gwlden who we think are the best ln the world Pep sesslons are called and basketball yells are practiced At the start of the season for the flrst two weeks basketball consisted mamly of gettmg mn shape Each day we ran around the gym and then dnd various exercises which Mr Shemwell our coach taught us Then we practiced shootmg and runmng offensive and defenswe plays Th1s year as far as v1ctor1es go we have not been too successful bemg w1th each other and making new frxends One thxng we stress above all others 1s sportsmanship Although we have lost many games none of us has ever lost control of hls temper Frlday afternoon February 6 1948 the first team went to Highland to play a game After a long hazardous trlp we were determined to win a game At the end of the half we were still ln the lead fzz Z1 The second half we stayed in the lead from Z 5 points most of the tlme Wlth a mxnute and one half to play we scored 13 polnts to come out at the end of the game w1th a 63 56 victory So we returned to Hazel Green with a victory and wlth the deter mmatlon to practice and xmprove each year GH After all we don't play basketball just to winl We play for the fun of playing, . . -
