THE GOLDEN NIEAN CLASS POEM Once as I sat pondermg Over what this class should do A splrxt came and spake these words That I w1ll repeat to you A Dreamer stood and gazed and dreamed At the edge of a desert plain Had v1s1ons of flourlshmg c1t1es And f1elds of wavmg gram., But he only dreamed nought dld he To make those vlslons come true And trudgmg home he only thought Of the thmgs he would like to do A worker came to the self same spot To try and see lf he might Wrest from the stubborn soll The lwmg that was hls by rlght Hard and fast tolled the Worker All day under blazmg sun No one could call hum a shirker When the end of the day had come Spake the Vo1ce In a Solemn tone Though both had a worthy sp1r1t Each was a faulure alone Then to the plam came another To try where the others had failed W1th a cheerful smile and a hopeful song He bravely the task assa1led He tackled the job wxth eagerness Wxth a far sighted atm in v1ew He toxled and strove with a PURPOSE And worked txll those dreams came true Now where the Dreamer dreamed dreams And the Worker toiled m despaxr May be seen the flourishing c1t1es And farms and gardens rare Blessed the Dreamers and Workers Spake the Voice when the tale was done But more blessed still is the happy man Who is both of these in one Then the spirit ceased speaking Leaving me calm and serene For we have this Truth to live by But, Alas: for the Dreamer, the Workerg The wisdom ofthe Golden Mean.
