HA ZFL GREEN ACADEMY Svcty seven years ago three men in this community had a vision of a school for the underprivileged children of this mountain area These three men made a contrtbutton of S 500 each toward the bulldlng of a school house which became known as Hazel Green Academy and toward the employment of a teacher The first three or four years the school was maintamed by contrnbutnons and the further efforts of tts founders Because of the rapid increase lh the number of students it became necessary to enlarge the bunldmg and employ additional teachers and because of the inability of the citizens of the community to lend further fmancial aid the promoters were compelled to seek outside aid for the continuing of the school or give up the project The situation was brought to the attention of the Christian Woman s Board of Missions of Kentucky Those noble women caught a vision of the need felt the desire to help and accepted the challenge as their own responsibility Heriocally they supported and guided the work of the school until the formation of the United Christian Society when agam the continued need of the School was seen And now for more than twenty fwe years this great or gannzatnon has been responsible for the Academy The course of study offered in Hazel Green Academy is in keeping with state regulations for all accredited high schools In addition to these requirements courses ln Bible are also required by the Academy Regular chapel exercises conducted by the members of the faculty and also by members of the student body tend to deepen the spxrttual and moral hfe of the students As the school has grown ln years so has its equipment and its services to of land are two comfortable dormitories a modern school butldlng a gymnasium an mdustrial building housing the central heating system and work shop a community cannery and modern daury barn equipped with electric milkers and a sllo On the second floor of the boys dormitory ts a hospxtal whxch serves the community and whtch has rendered an mvaluable se rvtce through the years It is the only hospital um Wolfe County and its service should be expanded trained nurses a dentist, and another doctor to work wtth our present doctor are needed Changing conditions such as improved roads and a larger number of schools make mt increasingly apparent that educatuon ts no longer as un times past the unique function of mountatn missions And so durmg the past several years whlle continuing to offer educattonal opportunities to the youth of the area Hazel Green Academy has also sought to offer services to the general public One of the finest contributions being made to the community IS through the demonstration farm of 2.12 ac res The tractor combine and hammermull are made avatlable to farmers at fair prtces In times of their need Several scores of farmers have been served m this way The modern da1ry barn and community cannery have been valuable additions to the farm It was mdeed a pr1v1lege to work with Work Campers UI producmg and canning over 6 tons of food for European reltef The school has also been of considerable service to the farmers of this area by breeding and making available to them htgh grade dairy and beef cattle and hogs. the community, On our campus, a slightly rolling hilltop containing about 30 ac res
