omecoming l g r Hayward High School's first Homecoming celebration got under way at 8:00 p.m. Thursday, October 20, when a huge bonfire was touched off at the high school. The band provided music for the pep rally which was held in the light of the fire. Homecoming king and queen, Alan Olsen and Goldie Greene, were crowned at the rally. Thursday's activities were topped off with a huge snake dance that wound and twisted its way through town. Friday afternoon, October 21 the parade units gathered at the City Park. The parade consisted of class floats, schoolclub floats, and other units provided by towns people. The winning float was provided by the Junior Class. Biggest event of the celebration was the football contest between the Hayward Hurricanes and the Washburn Castleguards. The game saw a happy ending. We defeated Washburn 12 - 2. The climax of the two-day celebration was the dance, held in the high school gym, Friday night starting at 9:00 and lasting until 1:00 a.m. Selmer Alvey's band provided the rhythm. Our first Homecoming proved to be a huge success.
