These librarians have the tasks of keeping order within their small domain, of aiding those students who need help with reference work or in choosing and finding books suited to their individual interests, of checking circu- lation books in and out and of collecting and recording finesg for, inevitably there are those who keep books out just a little longer than the library laws allow. The library is a busy place because it fills many roles. It can be a refuge for the student who merely seeks relaxation. He can find it here in the pages of a novel, in a book of travel or of poetry, in the account of someone else's life, or, perhaps, in a recent magazine. The library is a ready source of information. Encyclopedias, dictionaries almanacs, a magazine clipping file, and reference books on assorted subjects await the student with a questioning mind--or maybe the stu- dent with an assignment which requires some research. And certainly not the least part of the library's contributions is that period of relaxation that so many find on a Friday afternoon look- ing at the pictures in Life or chuckling at a cartoon in the Qglllgglg or the Saturday Evening Post--silently, of course.
