These librarians have the tasks of keeping order within their small domain, of aiding those students who need help with reference work or in choosing and finding books suited to their individual interests, of checking circu- lation books in and out and of collecting and recording finesg for, inevitably there are those who keep books out just a little longer than the library laws allow. The library is a busy place because it fills many roles. It can be a refuge for the student who merely seeks relaxation. He can find it here in the pages of a novel, in a book of travel or of poetry, in the account of someone else's life, or, perhaps, in a recent magazine. The library is a ready source of information. Encyclopedias, dictionaries almanacs, a magazine clipping file, and reference books on assorted subjects await the student with a questioning mind--or maybe the stu- dent with an assignment which requires some research. And certainly not the least part of the library's contributions is that period of relaxation that so many find on a Friday afternoon look- ing at the pictures in Life or chuckling at a cartoon in the Qglllgglg or the Saturday Evening Post--silently, of course. Colorful murals of Hawaiian scenes were painted on the walls and palm trees swayed gracefully amid tropical flowers. The band provided music for the pep rally which was held in the light of the fire. Homecoming king and queen, Alan Olsen and Goldie Greene, were crowned at the rally. Thursday's activities were topped off with a huge snake dance that wound and twisted its way through town. Friday afternoon, October 21 the parade units gathered at the City Park. The parade consisted of class floats, schoolclub floats, and other units provided by towns people. The winning float was provided by the Junior Class. Biggest event of the celebration was the football contest between the Hayward Hurricanes and the Washburn Castleguards. The game saw a happy ending. We defeated Washburn 12 - 2. The climax of the two-day celebration was the dance, held in the high school gym, Friday night starting at 9:00 and lasting until 1:00 a.m. Selmer Alvey's band provided the rhythm. Our first Homecoming proved to be a huge success. lip r omecoming My 'E i kk,, Lk ,, ,. . cwxgiigl 1 Grand March Prize float Bonfire Mtn 'UQ Freshmen float PGP Tally jooflaf Touchdown I 1 3, Interference 14? y I -2' 1-F l Tn .,. .5 .- I .n .u- ' . -'. . The ledger shows lh wins chalked up in a total of 20 games. Conference record: 9 wins, 3 losses. In conference competition the Hurricanes captured second place, after holding top spot a good share of the season. Playing scrappy, aggressive ball, the Hurricanes proved one of the fastest quintets seen in action in many years. Smooth ball-handling by guards Alan Olsen and Jerry Tordoff, plus dead- ly marksmanship by this pair, accounted for much of Hayward's offensive strength. Hawking the ball in and around and under the hoops by Jim Archambault, center, and Roland Heinkel and Duane Barber, for- wards, also added to the teams' success. Most important quality was consistent, smooth, Teamwork. Everybody played the game hard and well. Reserve players saw plenty of action and always did a fine job in relief roles. Individual scoring records show what an important job the re- serves did. They include Bob Woodbeck, Dennis and Jim Barber, Larry Somerville and Tom Larson. Two seniors, Alan Olsen and Roland Heinkel, will be absent from next year's cage roster. These boys played the game well and will be missed when competition is resumed next fall. The B team also ended a successful season with a record of 9 wins against 3 losses. lfl Clldj .W , s ' f V. 5 593+-N I 'f GLH ar SEPTEMBER ff 5--School begins--315 students Football practice --First football game at Cumberland Kwon? --Election of class officers Football at Frederick Cwonj 26--Dougherty's Dolls, Ventriloquist and Puppetteer Seniors sport class rin s 30--Football at Barron Kwon? 16 23 OCTOBER 7--Freshmen Initiation lh--Teachers' Convention at Eau Claire Night football at Ladysmith flostl 20--Homecoming rally, bonfire R snake dance 21--Down-town pre-game float parade Slogan, nBeat Washburnn Homecoming football game fwonl 2 --Carl Thorson, The Jovial Jesting Juggler 2 --Football here with Spooner Ctiedl Hallowe'en party, sponsored by Juniors NOVEMBER L--End of first quarter Basketball practice begins 7--Elliott James, Miraculous liquid-air demonstration ll--Armistice Day program Cone-half day of school! 15--First basketball game, DePauda here Cwonb 17--Mason's stage NMonke Business at its bestu 22--Basketball at CumBeriand Cwonj 2h-25--Thanksgiving vacation 29--Basketball, Cable here fwonj DECEMBER 2--Basketball at Ladysmith Qwonj 6--The Roamers, Four singing Vagabonds Basketball, Shell Lake here fwonl Z--Basketball, Rice Lake here Kwon! l --Basketball at Barron Cwonl 20--Annual Christmas Ball, sponsored by Seniors 21--Football boys at a special banquet 22--Annual Choir Concert 23--Basketball at DePadua Clost by 1 point!
