THE WINGED H ,IUNE '25 O HAYWARD HIGH SCHOOL FOREWORD NOTHER YEAR has slipped byg for some slowly, for others too quickly. . The boy finds it a long time from one birthday to the next, the man of sixty finds his birthdays coming too fast-he may even try to forget them. The boy lives in the present and in his dreams of the future: the man lives in the present and in the memories of the pastg for both alike, the present is the great reality. Now is the day of salvation. This day calls-this one living present day-calls us to clear the mist from our eyes and the fog from our brain and the sloth from our muscles that we may see and think and take hold of life. Take hold, take hold, strongly and wisely. Be teachable. Know that you do not know-muchg know that you do know-something. To that something, add a little each day-this day. Get knowledge, and strive mightily for wisdom-which is quite a different thing from knowledge. Live, live today, with level vision, active mind, helping hand and loving heart. So, when the days have brought around another milestone, you-boy and man alike-can be glad in it. FREDERICK PERLEY joHNsoN, Principal. OUR APPRECIATION Sometimes, words are very inadequate. When one's heart is filled with deep gratitude toward those who have gladly lent a helping hand in one's work-then words seem useless to express his happy thanks. The Editor and her Staff are profoundly grateful to the English, Typing and Drawing Departments for their constant support, to the Student Body at large and to all who have contributed to our book. We are greatly indebted to Miss Rogers and Miss Roemer, who gave their pupils class time to prepare material for the UWINGED H , and to the town merch- ants, our advertisers. We thank you all-ab imis pectoribus. THE EDITOR. Page Four

THE WINGED H JUNE '25 LHAYWARD HIGH SCHOOL EDITGRIAL NOTHER fleeting year has passed. It may not have been fleeting for some--the sick, or the idle, or the discontented, but oh, how swift for those of us who are young and ever busy and who have the blessings of good health and felicity. Before we enter High School, the course of our lives is like that of the little stream trickling down the mountain side, with a small, noisy uncertainty-just bubbling along childlike and irresponsible. On the other hand, there is the mighty ocean, ever roaring, challenging, now, a mass of seething gray waters in the tempest dashing against cliffs, barriers to its progress, and now, a calmer, more dignified, more melancholy body of green waters -yet always in constant motion. We are akin to the turbulent ocean when we have reached the prime of life and are deep in worldly affairs, following a profession or a vocation. When we are failing, we are the fighting gray waters, but when we are successful in our ventures and undertakings, spiritual or otherwise, then we are the calmer blue- green waters, tinged with a philosophic melancholy derived from the atmosphere of life. But the beautiful span of waters between the helpless, trickling stream and the surging, restless ocean is the level, steadily flowing river of our intermediate life-and a great part of it, the sweetest part, is comprised of the four High School years. Then it is that we are the clear, beautiful river, catching the sparkling beams of the Sun of Light, Love and Learning and flashing them back as the current presses onward. And the little boats that come to the banks of this river of High School Life carry cargoes of precious things like materials for character building, stores of knowledge and loads of opportunities for progress and all sorts of careers- some woven from brightest floss in complicated pattern and others more drab, of less intricate design-all there just the same for everyone of us. Then, let us stand to and ply the oars with a willing hand lest the precious opportunities be loosened from their moorings and carried away by the swift cur- rent forever. And, with the confidence and buoyancy of youth, can there be a task of keener enjoyment, fellow-students, than that of getting the most and best out of our intermediate life as it passes swiftly along? Then, let us labor that these opportunities be firmly anchored, that the precious materials be safely disembarked, and that the Sun of Light, Love and Learning shall continue to shine forever on the joyous, sparkling river of High School Life.
