Top rebounder for the team was Alfred Jones with a whopping 362. He also finished the season with an 11.3 average points per game. Coach Reynolds' starting five all scored averages in double figures. The balanced scoring held their in- dividual records below some of the other players in the state, but their even distribution of points and balanced team play paid off with a state title. 63 ROAD TO CLASS 2A CHAMPIONSHIP The Indians’ road to the state championship began when Hayti defeated South Pemiscot to take first place in the Boothcel Conference. The Indians faced the Bulldogs again on Feb. 5, defeating them by 65-60 to win the Con- ference Tourney. From the Conference Tourney, the Hayti “Hoopers” traveled to the District competition Feb. 21-25 at Three Rivers Community College. Proving themselves worthy of their number-one seeding, they defeated Senath 83-68, North Pemiscot 70-62, and (the fourth time) the South Pemiscot Bulldogs. Hayti won that game 56-53 to take the Regional Championship. Winning the District gave Hayti the right to face the Kelly Hawks in the sectionals at Sikcston. On Feb. 28 the Indians and the Hawks met, and Hayti emerged victorious, beating Kelly 87-79. Hayti then advanced to the quarter finals in Flat River. On March 2 Hayti faced a very tough Wcllston team, but managed once again to come out on top, defeating the Trojans 67-62. With that victory, the Indians and the fans packed their bags and embarked on the journey to Springfield for the semi-finals. On March 4. the Tribe faced Palmyra Panters in Hammonds Center at Springfield. Hayti extinguished Palmyra’s hopes for a bid at the State Championship, trampling the Panthers 72-58. On March 5, the mighty Indians squared off against a talented Licking Wildcat ball club. Hayti went into the half with the score tied 34-34. In the third quarter the Indians fell behind, but during the fourth quarter they showed why they were playing for the State Championship. Through great team work, accurate shooting and superb sportsmanship, the Indians came back to defeat Licking 78-72 to become the 1983 Class 2A State Champions. VARSITY TRACK TEAM DOES WELL IN BOTH DISTRICT AND STATE This year was a historical year for the Hayti boys track team. For the first time ever, the Indians placed at the District Meet as a team. Hayti captured fifth place in the nine-team competition at Willow Springs. Ronnie West, Gene McIntyre, Maurice Washington, and William Townson earned the right to compete in State competition by taking first place in the 800-mctcr relay. Ronnie also won first place in the 100 and 200-meter dashes, enabling him to compete in those two events, also. In the State competition, the Indians placed 19th out of 70. Individually, the 800-meter relay team cap- tured second and Ronnie West took fifth in the 100-meter and eighth in the 200-meter. All four of these guys received All-State recognition for the fine job they did. 70 GIRLS HAVE SUCCESSFUL TRACK SEASON The 1982-83 girls track team had a very successful season in spite of the fact that the majority of the team was com- posed of freshmen and sophomores. The Lady Indians made a very strong showing at the District Meet by finishing second behind the host team. Willow Springs. This was the fourth straight year for the girls to finish either first or second in the District Meet. Due to first and second placings in the District these girls earned the right to compete in the Slate Meet: Sonji Dunn.
