COUNCIL HA YTI HIGH SCHOOL Volume 35 Foreword Once again another class has graduated with mixed emotions of regret and happiness. Next year will mean, for some, another year of school at HHS: but for those who have graduated, a new beginning. The publications class has tried to capture a few of the golden moments and highlights such as the Junior-Senior Prom and the Home- coming games and dances. We shop the 1980 Council will serve as a reminder of all the good times shared by everyone at HHS. Co-editors: Paula Merrell Robin Ody 2 Contents Council Royalty Favorites..... Organizations.. The publications class joins the faculty in expressing to Mr. George McKinzie — high school principal for the past three years — our appreciation for his work while a member of the high school staff. Student comments: “He is understanding and considerate. “I like his attitude.” “I think Mr. McKinzie is a very under- standing person who sits down and talks to you before he makes his decision.” 32 INDIANS HAVE FINE SEASON When compared to the last few years' football teams, the 1979 varsity football Indians were a fine team, win- ning three of the nine games played. Although the tribe defeated only South Pemiscot. Doniphan, and Portageville. they played very well against their other opponents, especially against Caruthersville. Scott City and Malden. The home game against Scott City was one of the best games ever played on the home field. 34 Joe Young Coach Finle observes as Indians practice. NINE NAME D TO ALL-CONFERENCE Players named to the All-Conference First team: Yural Eggleston Quarterback. Darin Suddarth Kicker. Joe Young Defensive back, and Ronnie Tice — Linebacker. Those five named to the Second Team are pictured on pages 36 and 37. Yural Eggleston Darin Suddarth Ronnie Tice Jerry Cooper Dewayne Rowsley Buddy Inman Jim Phillips relaxes with two Indians during a break in practice. 36 Head Coach Rayburn Whilener keeps a watchful eye on two Indians as he tells them how. Coach Whitener comments: We feel, playing as we did with Caruthersville. Scott City, Malden, and East Prairie, that we were very much in these games from start to finish and this in itself was encouraging. The boys never quit, even though we lost some tough games with these four opponents. We were just a play away. A highlight of our season came following the Scott City game held on Saturday night early in October. With several area coaches and fans present, we gave them a game and left an impression with each of them. 38 FOUR MAKE ALL-DISTRICT Hayti Indians placed on the All-District team were: Yural Eggle- ston. First Team Quarterback; Darin Suddarth. First Team Place- kicker; Ronnie Tice. First Team Linebacker; and Joe Young, First Team Safety. Coach Ratliffs comments: Needless to say-1 am very proud of these girls. They have played a long and tough season, determined to make it the best. They won all ten regular season games, two invitational tournaments, and, to top it all off, the District Champion- ship. Of this team, all but three will be returning, hopefully, next year. Rhonda Nolen, Jennifer Rowe, and Irma Sanford will be graduating this year. Kneeling — Shirlene Eggleston, Cathie Robinson. Donna Borders, LaJoyce Trotter, Irma Sanford. Standing— Pat Moil. Alberta Thomas. Rhonda Nolen, Lois Ruff. Jennifer Rowe, Stacey Cooper. 40 COACH RATLIFF COMMENTS ON ‘B’ VOLLEYBALL GIRLS The “B” volleyball girls did a great job this season, ending with a 10-0 record. They played almost every school in this area, dealing a few of these teams their only loss. This is a young team with only four sophomores and eight freshmen. These eight freshmen will be left to carry the team next year and I have confidence that they can do the job. There's a lot of ability in these girls and I am looking forward to their next season. 41 These three girls are graduating seniors who will be lost to the team next year. The “B” team had three outstanding players: Dennis Thomas led the “B” team Indians with a 14.2 average per game. Percy Ruff averaged 12.5 points and Thomas Johnson averaged 10.5 points. Mrs. Kay Ratliff has spent much time in her efforts to have winning volleyball and track teams. She has had winning sea- sons time after time and has shown the girls sportsmanship as she led the teams to state competition. Two students commented: “She attends school functions and adds to the school.” “She is a dedicated coach.” We dedicate the 1980 Council to a deserving teacher — MRS. KAY RATLIFF.
