a guUim m g atA Hayti High School Hayti, Missouri J. W. RICHARDSON Deviation BELOW - Mr. Richardson is present at nearly all school activities. This year the staff wanted to honor two peo- ple not directly connected with classroom teaching but who serve well to help make Hayti High a better school. We are pleased to dedicate the 1974 COUN- CIL to Miss Barbara Allen and Mr. J. W. Rich- ardson. Of Miss Allen, students say: I think she is dedicated to the students at Hayti High. She tries to help solve their problems and shows understanding.” She takes time out to talk to you even though she is busy. She has a good disposition and is just O. K. Of Mr. Richardson, students say: He’s been very helpful to both students and faculty. He is liked by almost everyone. He has done all he could for our class as well as for others, without hesitation. 2 BARBARA ALLEN BELOW - Miss Allen took an active pan in the Sadie Hawkins Day observed during the 1972-1973 school year. 3 owieumd The Council has at last been completed. The staff has worked long and hard on it, but we have learned much and have truly enjoyed our work. As our high school years close, we look back with fond memories upon the wonderful moments as students of Hayti High School. As you look through the yearbook, we hope that it will make you smile and recall the good old days at H. H. S. (1874-1974) January 1873 - A new district was formed in Townships 18 and 19. Range 12, designated Sub-District 2 of Pemiscot County. April 2, 1873 - Qualified voters met at the residence of George W. Hayes and elected local directors of the new district: George W. Hayes, Cunis J. Oates, and Winchester Relfe. This old building now stands on the inside of the fence surrounding the football field. August 8, 1874 - It was decided to build a school house on the East side of the McFarland land in the place where the school shed sat. The building was to be 20 X 24 feet, a box building with weather boarding and three win- dows in each side with a double door at the end. November 30, 1874 - The site finally selected for the new school was the George W. Hayes land (where the South Elementary is now located) and the new house was completed and finished according to contract and received from W. C. Varner, the contractor, for the sum of $375. As of January 1974, the Hayti Schools consist of four campuses: South Elementary, North Elementary, the Junior High, and the Senior High. There are 1473 students enrolled in k-12, and the personnel consists of 82 faculty and 69 other employees. The valuation is $5,758,857. 46 FAVORITES FROM LEFT TO RIGHT - Roy Ross, Derrick Flowers, Marilyn Sanford, Corliss Taylor, Eddie Martin. WAYNE ALEXANDER Catcher KENNETH HIGGINS Third base 57 1973 SPRING BASEBALL TEAM WINS DISTRICT TOURNEY AND ENTERS STATE TOURNEY The Hayti Indian spring baseball team of 1973 had to be the best yet. The mighty Indians had an overall record of 16-3 and went undefeated in the Conference. The Indians had it all. Their pitching was excellent as the staff had two ace right- handers in Randy Gardner and Bobby Alexander. To back up the good pitching, the Indians had the good defense, as they boasted one of the best double-play combina- tions in the Conference with the team of shortstop Danny White and second baseman Mark Cartee. Rounding out the infield were Freddy Booth, the sure-handed third- sacker, and our rocket-arm catcher Jerome Maxie. In the outfield, with the speed and sure hands ready to cut down opposing runners, were left fielder Harry Grant with the speed, center fielder Jimmie Morgan with the speed, and right fielder Mike Jackson with the sure hands. Along with the pitching and defense, the Indians had a thunderous hitting attack. The Indians had a team batting average of .344 and a team total of 15 home runs. At the end of the season there was no doubt that the Indians were among the top four teams in the state. We know that the Indians would be ineffective without a coach and we believe they had one of the best. Coach Jerry Cecil taught the Indians how to win and then encouraged them to do so.
