Text from Pages 1 - 128 of the 1968 volume:

To a few, HNHS is just a school,” but to the majority of students it is the place where they learned together, shared together, and had fun together, These are the happiest days of your life.” These days, which our yearbook has attempted to capture, are full of the spirit of activity. Janice Norrid Teeter Judy Ledbetter Editors G on tents Oecfica ion Cj asses auori es Tlt ifetics | 0raanizations Administration Oecfication No students can achieve their best without the guidance of a good teacher. No teacher or principal can do his best work without the leadership of a good superintendent. Mr. SAM WALLACE, superintendent of schools, provides the type of energetic leadership that challenges both students and teachers to do their best to make this school system better. In appreciation of his cheerful and dynamic spirit, the yearbook staff dedi- cates this 1968 Council to SUPERINTENDENT SAM WALLACE. 3 Though changes in the appearance of the school occur with the passing of years, happy memories of our school days remain. 4 rcMinnr JLIIIVIXJ GERALD MICHAEL ALSUP Science Club 2,3; Library 4; Latin Club 3,4; Spanish Club 2; Science Fair 3rd Place 3; Latin Club Reporter 4; Council Staff 4; Student Council Poster Contest 2nd Place 3; Band 2 MARION MICHAEL AMES Football 2,3,4; Track 3,4 RHONDA AMES Thespians 4; Science Club 3; Majorette 2, Drum Majorette 3,4; Band 2,3,4; Mixed Chorus 2,3,4 PATRICIA BETH ANDREWS Thespians 3,4; F. Review of Senior land Ac ivi ies The band performed at all the football games at home. They also performed at three away games when the Indians met the Caruthersville Tigers, the Malden Greenwaves, and the East Prairie Eagles. Of course, the band played at nearly all of the pep rallies. Next they traveled to Poplar Bluff to the annual marching festival. Some of the students journeyed to Band Day at Cape Girardeau. The entire marching band went to Cape as one of the ten bands selected to march at SEMO’s homecoming. The top ten clarinet students went to Murray State University to learn techniques from Mr. Nilo Hovey, December 4. The band participated in Christmas parades at Steele and at Hayti. On March 30, 1968, the band participated in the District Band competition. On April 30 their annual spring concert was given. Also, select students participated in the All-District Band and All-Division Band. The band ended its 2 1 2 years with Mr. Ron Cox at the close of the first semester. Mr. Jim Karr then took over as music instructor. 73 G£orus ROW 1, L to R - Mr. Cox, R. Ames, M. Bush, V. Ledbetter, M. Pierce, B. Meek, C. Maclin, T. Vaughn, S. Greenwell, M. L. Whitener. ROW 2 - F. As they screeched to a stop, the corner policeman, Michael Grady, known best for capturing reckless teenage speeders, eyed them suspiciously. Farther up the road was a detour sign stating that the chairman of a committee to promote street repairs in Hayti, Jackie Wilson, had the whole square disrupted in preparation for complete reconstruc- tion. Army posters on the back street buildings pictured Regina Mullins and Pat Kerley in an attempt to recruit girls into the service. Two blocks from school they were stopped by a train. Charley Woodson pushed a boxcar door aside and with an old cigar hanging from his mouth, descended. He was truly a success - a bum. The fog had thickened while they were stopped and now they could hardly see. They slowly pulled up to the once familiar but now somewhat strange school . . . what was going on? The shaky foursome cautiously walked in and proceeded to home economics where there were now two divisions of seniors. Carless Johnson was teaching boys and Patsy Manning had taken Miss Monroe s place because she had gotten married several months before to a millionaire. A special speaker in the girl's department was Paula Guise. She began by asking, Did any of you see what Merle Norman just put out? Meanwhile, a fight was brewing in Danny Bradsher's drafting class. His assistant. Bill Wallace, calmed them down. Coach Bland formerly taught drafting but had to quit due to expenses of a large family. Speaking of children, Mrs. Janice Teeter, who is a modern old lady in the shoe with a lot of little Teeters tottering around, has her share. The bell rang and the healthy boys were off to Mike Alsup’s P. E. class. Jimmy Bingle, now mana- ger of a finger-painting factory, was painting names for the foulboard. The not-so-healthy girls advanced to Gladys Diann Morgan's health class. She replaced Coach Lowry so he could do graduate work on the effects of alcohol, tobacco, and drugs. The special guest of the day was Larry Denny who returned as an example of what alcohol, tobacco, and staying up late can do to a person. Third period found a familiar but old student, Gene Boren, who was still trying to pass bookkeeping under Mrs. Summar. Remaining on the bulletin board from the first of school was a list of new teachers. Iva Walker - who had graduated from Lincoln University, married, and had a family - is teaching at Hayti South Elementary. Orville Beatty is teaching mathematics and Benny Hail lias taken Mrs. Garrett's place as speech and drama teacher. Duane Curtis introduced a new course on law and has his own office and private secretary named Sooz. From the window could be seen a Nine-0 cab with fresh lettering on the door reading Under New Management - Harold Goodwin and Gary Tull. Following behind, and also late, was Johnny Darnell, still driving the same dirty 61 Chevrolet. The period was almost over; so the driver's education cars were returning. Michael Sprouse, owner of General Motors, now supplies the school with these cars. At lunch a most popular eating place for all students was Sargent's Dairy Serv, which is only one of a vast chain between here and Chaffee owned by Pamela Sargent. Some boys spend lunch hour at the Blue Room, formerly Sherwood's Lunchette, now owned by Willie Hawkins, who sells as much liquor as possible and has regular dice games on Monday. Carol Long, a familiar face on the society page of the newspaper, was to speak in an assembly after lunch, but became so wrought up in trying to beat the slot machine in Jimmy's barn that she failed to make it. The most exciting part of a day was when someone was called to the office. After the excitement died down, the announcements came out informing the students of a two-part movie featuiing death- defying tricks on a horse by that well-known horse trainer, Debbie Mathis; and films and demonstrations by Christi Curtis, a hula dance instructor on Waikiki Beach. The announcements also spoke of an early dismissal due to a minor crumbling throughout the old building. 119 That afternoon the four students decided to relax at the show and attended the matinee. When they became too loud in the lobby, Erma Ledbetter, floor-bouncer and owner of the theatre, demanded they be quieter. The real noise maker. Sherry Mercer, was given no warning. She was bounced out swiftly. Sue Bell became rowdy also but Erma wasn't about to tangle with the World's Champion Wrestler. After the show they noticed the car needed gas and decided to go to a service station. On the way, they noticed Allen Barker had been pulled over in his NHRA stock eliminator he has been driving over the streets of Hayti. They pulled into the closest station. The manager, Wayne Vaughn, filled it up. Now they were on their way home and approaching another thick fog--maybe back to the present. Could they have been in the Twilight Zone? The 1968 Council staff prophesies that twenty-four of the 1968 graduates will be living in areas outside of Hayti. We foresee that Ray Tyler will be flying airplanes over Vietnam in ten years, since the war will still be going on. Claudia Smotherman will also be there fighting as a second lieutenant in the Marine Corps. Three of the '68 graduates will go into the teaching profession at the United Nations World School: Tamara Wade and Claretta Hooper, who will be teaching in the largest school in the world; and Judy Ledbetter, who will be teaching foreign language. In ten years Gordon Duckworth will have graduated from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, ranking first in his advanced math class. Ann Guarr will still be wanting to go to A. S. U. instead of Cape. Bobby Brunson will become a defense attorney after having graduated from law school. Barbara Grant will have graduated from Lincoln University and be raising a large family. We see David Craig as the head trainer for the World Champion Green Bay Packers, and Mike Stet- son as the sole owner and coach of the Boston Celtics. In ten years Dianne Tillman will be the con- ductor of the New York Philharmonic Orchestra. In the field of business we foresee Dawn Vincent as a fashion designer for Dior or Rucci. Rhonda Ames and Sammy will have an adjoining beauty parlor and barber shop. Ten years from now Ira Holmes will be the general manager of the Kellogg's Cornflakes Company. Elijah Thompson will be the world distributor of Zonderman Publishing House. Tony Newsom will become the editor of Mad magazine. Rosie Gamble will work in the Social Security Department in New York. Gary Crites will be president of the Worldwide Donut Holes, Incorporated. Phil Johnson will be manager of Pogo Sticks, Inc. We see Karen Howard under the T. V. cameras doing a tooth paste commercial for Ultra-brite on NBC. In ten ears Bill Faris will be a young doctor known by the infamous name of Stinky Bear. Earnest Babcock will have his own chain of variety stores and will take Saturday nights off to play organ for Lawrence Welk. Thus concludes the predictions for the year 1978. enior 120 S'- vS
