Besides his capable athletic direction, he has been outstanding as a teacher in other subjects. To show our appreciation, we wish to dedicate this 1958 Council to Mr. Bill Landers. MILDRED DILLARD We all look fprward to the publication of the Council. This year it is especially gratifying because we are making one of our dedica- tions to a teacher without whose help this book would not have been possible. For four years she has served Hayti High in the capacity of Commercial teacher, and her patience and interest have helped to make ours a better school. Therefore we wish to dedicate this 1958 Council to Mrs. Mildred Dillard. The new gymnasium and administration building (top photo), a major im- provement in the Hayti school system, was offici- ally dedicated on January 14, 1958 (center photo). In the first basketball game to be played in the new gym, that night, Hayti de- feated Braggadocio 50 27. In action photo at right Hayti rings in a goal. The Future Farmers of America, or FFAâ' as it is commonly known, is the national organ- ization of boys studying Vocational Agriculture in high school. Purposes of the organization include leadership and character development, cooperation, service, improved agriculture, citizenship and patriotism. The Hayti Chapter Future Farmers of America was organized in September, 1946. Major activities include operation of a small farm with the Chapter-owned tractor and equipment, annual parent-son banquet and participation in agricultural fairs and contests. In the 1958 spring contests, the meat team composed of George Eddie Tillman, Eddie Ho- ward Tillman and Rayburn Whitener woo first in the district and group three in the state con- test. Claude Whitener received a State Farmer Award and Jerry Maclin received an FFA Foun- dation first place award in Farm Mechanics. The over-all goal of the Future Homemakers of America is to help girls improve personal, family and community living, now and in the future. Activities throughout the year, beginning with the annual trip to the Mid-South Fair and concluding with the installation ceremony for new officers, work toward the accomplishment of the eight purposes of the organization. Out- standing events on the calendar were the Halloween ââtrick or treatâ for clothes and toys to be distributed to needy families at Christmastime, the ââSilver Bellsâ Christmas party, the Home Ec-Ag Exchange Classes, the annual âSt. Patâsâ Dance and the âMa-Pa-Sister-Brotherâ Ban- quet during F. H. A. Week. Paulette Jenkins and Diane Thompson attended the State Convention in Jefferson City along with Shirlene Smith, who was selected to sing in the All-State Chorus. For the first time the chapter is naming the ââOutstanding F. H. A. Girl of the Year.â San- dra Bell, chapter secretary, was selected to receive this award. The performance is not so important as the experiences gained from it. Membership in Troop 1373. the National Thespian Honor Society, is available through a point system to any student who shows a desire and willingness to work in Dramatic activities. This year the troop was honored by the National Society through publication in the National Magazine of articles concerning our work. These were in the February and March issues. The troop entered a float in the Community Christmas Parade and placed second. The Hayti one-act play placed first at the District Meet at Cape Girardeau and received a Superior rating at the State Dramatic Meet at Missouri University.
