This was the first football championship ever recorded in the annals of Hayti High School. The Indians played a full schedule of 10 games ana finished with a season’s record of 7 games won and three lost. The Indians drop- ped only one conference decision, that one to East Prairie by the score of 33-7. The other two losses were to non-conference teams; Caruthersville beat the Indians 21-0, and Kennett took their measure by the score of 13-0. The Indians swept over all other opponents and usually it was a case of the Indians playing just as well as they had to. Next year’s team will be minus 6 players from this year’s squad, all of them Seniors; Captain and fullback, Richard Hawkins; End, Jerry Bain, Tackle, Bill Simmons; Halfback, Gene Pinkston; Halfback, Charles Watts, and Quarterback, Dawson Wells. As a special treat for the 1948 football squad, the Lion’s Club took up collections from vari- ous businessmen and bought the team’s tickets to the New Year’s “Delta Bowl” game at Mem- phis, Tennessee. Added honors went to various members of this year’s team. Captain Richard Hawkins was the leading scorer in the Little Eight Con- ference with 75 points; and was second high scorer in the district. Dawson Wells Jr. was elected to the All-Conference Team for the second straight year; Ends, Jerry Bain and Hugh Dorris, Fullback, Richard Hawkins, and Guard, Herb Wickham were elected to the second team on All-Conference selections; Tackle, Bill Simmons maide third team All-Con- ference; and Center and Co-Captain, Neal Dawson was given honorable mention. All in all it was a dismal year, for the Indians man- aged to win only 8 games out of a total of 18. There was one bright spot in the Redskin’s season, however, for they beat Caruthersville in the first game of the Sub-regional Tourna- ment by 4 points. This was undoubtedly the best game the team played all year. They were determined to win and they did win. But the Indians weren’t destined to go any farther in the tournament, for the very next night they were upset by Deering, a team that Hayti had beaten in season play by 7 points. The Indians won a third place trophy in the tournament by defeating Portageville. Coach Underwood thinks the basketball future in Hayti is bright- er, though, because many promising players were developed this season and next season all of us hope for a better year.
