The PTA is a self-governing unit that plans its programs and activities to meet the needs of children and youth in the community. The PTA welcomes into its membership parents, teachers, and all other citizens that are interested in the Welfare of children and youth. Our junior high unit differs from those of the elementary school units for two main reasons: 1. We serve youth in the entire community. 2. Our activities are geared towards the interests and the problems that confront our teenagers and their parents. Our main objective this past year was one of informing our members in areas that are often over looked. EIGHTH GRADE : - -:,,. The club tries to meet at least twice a month and enjoys many field trips and extra activities. Trips such as the following, Halstead Health Museum visitation, attendance of the Science Day at Kansas University of Lawrence, and touring of Wesley Medical Center are just a few examples. Guest speakers are also welcome at any opportunity. Another main activity of our club is our participation in the annual district Science Fair being held each year during May. Every one works very hard on a project of their own interests and to gain the opportunity to take their project to the Regional Science Fair held annually at the Beech Activity Center. Our club usually sends at least ten members and as many more as possible. We are always proud when any of our members gains acknowledgement there. We Would also like to show our appreciation to our science teachers who help sponsor our activities. These are: Mr. Craig, Mr. Van.Etten, Mr. Hebb, Mrs. Winters, and Mr. Simmons. These girls support the school teams throughout the year. In addi- tion to attending both home and out of town games, the girls boost school spirit by such activities as making signs and decorating bleechers. Sponsors for the Pep Club are Miss Bicknell and Miss Sibley. Y-TEENS Y-Teens is a non-denominational club open to all girls of junior and senior high age. As part of the YWCA, the Y-Teens Club secures its direction, program emphasis, and goals from the YWCA Purpose which is to 'build a fellowship of women and girls devoted to the task of realizing in our common life those ideals of the personal and social living to which we are committed by our faith as Christians. In this endeavor we seek to understand jesus, to share his love for all people, and to grow in the knowledge and love of God. The members partici- pated in the UNICEF drive, World Fellowship Fund, and worked on the hanging of the Greens, a Christmas party for the underprivileged children. Thus they strived to reach their goal, To grow as a person, to grow in friendship with people of all races, religions, nationalities, to grow in knowledge and love for God. 38 LIBR RY CLUB 1 The Library Club is an organization dedicated to service the library. Library Club members meet regularly dur- ing 4th hour on Mondays. In these meetings they plan projects to promote the library. Some projects are con- cerned with publicity and observance of special days, National Library Week, American Education Week, etc. Other projects are planned to raise money for improving the library. Money earned from this year's projects will be used to increase the number of listening stations in the library. LIBRARY CORP The Library Corp is a team of students who learn to do the various tasks that are necessar to o erat' a ff' ' y p ing n e ici- eint library. They man the charging desk, shelve books, read shelves, dust furniture, and answer students' ques- tions courteously. Besides being conscientious workers, Library Corp members are avid users of the library. 39 ORCHESTR The orchestra gives the students a chance to participate in what has often been called the highest form of musical expression . In this organization we combine the driving brass and Woodwinds with the singing strings. The orchestra meets during the fourth hour five times a week. Throughout the year it gives at least three or four concerts. These concerts include playing in exchange assemblies with other schools, a full Sunday after- noon concert, and a mass orchestra concert with all orchestras of the district. Those students in the junior High who try out and do well get to play in the Mid West Youth Symphony. Here they meet some of the prominent musicians of our day. The junior High Band offers the student a laboratory in which to perform on a woodwind, brass, or percussion instrument. The excellence they attain is determined somewhat by the amount of effort put forth by each student and by the group as a whole. The band serves the school by performing in parades in the community and by performing at athletic events. In addition to the band, the students have an opportunity to participate in Ensembles such as the Clarinet Choir, Saxophone Choir, Woodwind Quintet, Percussion Ensemble, and Stage Band. BOYS ENSEMBLE Len Gregg, Richard Frasher, Dennis Carrico. The Boys Ensemble is a new organization this year and we will be rehearsing at least once each week when we are full or anized. On th ' A h' h l ' ' ' y g e junior ig evel we are really searching for more boys with changed Voices to be able to sing in such an ensemble. MIXED CHORUS The mixed chorus this year is on a building program. We are anxious to find and develop more bass voices and next year we are sure that We will have them, for by that time at least half of our present number of boys will most likely be able to support the chorus as bass voices. GIRLS GLEE Our chorus of girls will be carrying the major portion of responsibility in concert because of our rehearsal time and number of girls enrolled in girls chorus. 42 ATHLETICS EIGHTH GRADE FOOTB LL TEAM FRONT ROW: Wayne Unrien, Steve Sawhill, Robert Woodman, Steve Pegg, Eddie Greenwood, Kent Latimer, ' ' - h B t Randy Kruse, Ricky Mason, Robert Ward, Dino Pelaccio, Rodney Deffenbaugh. Under the guidance of Mr. LeRoy Blasi and Mr. Steve Clanton, and with much hard Work, the team was able to end the season undefeated. The SEASON STATISTICS record was six Wins and one tie. Hflwks One of the highlights of the season was the Qoiliard 20-6 defeat of a powerful Ark City team which had cle mgtgn 12' 12 a long record of Wins over a period of several D eirwa er 34'7 seasons. The defensive team especially dis- Sr .Y 34-0 played a great effort in stopping Ark City late Winfield 4O'O in the game in our own territory. This pre- Garmin 32'6 served the Win which could easily have been a Afk City 13-7 loss had they scored. This team contains great talent and desire. It is hoped that they can continue their suc- cessful Ways throughout their years at Cam- pus. This year the team was selected from about forty boys and finally cut to fifteen. Seventh grade basketball teaches good basketball with emphasis upon good sportsmanship, team play, basic basketball fundamentals, and a desire to lead a school in the proper Way. Win or lose, a school is proud of the bas- ketball team, for they represent the school as leaders. This year's seventh grade team had fifteen good ball players with a desire to learn and Win. They faced good competition and with extremely hard Work have Won and lost. Anyone can be a good winner, however, a good loser is one Who tries to overcome and improve by harder Work. This squad has done just that. They are to be commended on their outstanding improvement.
