MR. FINIS McCOY attended East Tennessee State University where he received his B. S. and M. A. degrees in English. Your efforts have been rewarded with this grad¬ uation. Your future success will depend greatly on how well you put to use your preparation thus far. If you plan to go into the world of work, always try to give the mos t difficult or the simplest task your very best. It is a rare person indeed who is able to get more out of life than he is willing to put into it. You are going into a cold world, but I am sure you will make it a better place for having been there. It has been an honor and a genuine pleasure to work with you seniors this year. I can only hope I contributed to a pleasant year for you. It has been gratifying to me to work with you. May the Divine Master shower his blessings upon you all the way through life. To the Class of 74 You face the greatest challenge of any graduat¬ ing group in history. You may well be confused by the inconsistent and contradictory actions of some of those who had an obligation to set you an example and instead have failed you; who exer¬ cised authority by the dictum Do as I say” rather than ”Do as I do. ” You have heard and seen evi¬ dence of wrong-doing all the way from the local to the national level. You may well wonder what role you should assume. I trust and believe that you will be able to dis¬ tinguish the genuine from hypocrisy, honesty, and integrity from the greed and lust for power and that you will choose the good rather than the evil. You are a unique human being, created in the image of God. You have intelligence and some freedom of choice. Live accordingly; be truthful regardless of the consequences. Be honest though you do not gain immediately by it. Laugh, love, and be merciful. Treat every human being as if he or she were your brother or sister. In the final analysis, you must bear responsibility for your own actions. You cannot justify them by the actions of others. It is not too late to build a better world. The task is great.
