We, the annual staff of Haysi High School, wish to show our appreciation to Sylvia Evans for her outstanding efforts toward the betterment of our school by dedicating our 1974 THUNDERBOLT to her. Though Sylvia has been here only two years, she has brought about remarkable changes in the attitudes of her students and acquaintances. She has stirred up student participation in school events. Through her efforts the Pep Club has come to be a truly functioning organization which is eager to cheer our athletes on to success. Sylvia has shown her students and others the meaning of art and beauty. Though she teaches English, her students somehow end up having a discourse in philosophy and experiencing a few ’’sessions” in art and music appreciation. Sylvia ' s main interests include philosophy and religion, which she enjoys discussing immensely. She also enjoys art, music, rapping with friends, and generally having a fine time. The annual staff would like to wish her a long and happy life in which to continue enjoying these and many other things. Sylvia, you ' ve been wonderful and as one means of showing you our appreciation we deidcate to you the 1974 edition of the Haysi High School THUNDERBOLT. Q JjnCUv cJifJLs Mr. Mullins attended V. P. I. where he received his B. S. and M. S. degrees in Agricultural Education and Vocational Educa¬ tion. The events that accompany the approaching end of another school year are now a part of our busy school life. For more years than any member of our student body can remember, I have worked for the improve¬ ment of our school and community. It is not, therefore, strange that a th ousand thoughts and an equal number of memories should crowd my mind as I write this message. I must admit to moments in which I have entertained thoughts of doubt about the extent to which the school was fully meeting the needs of the students it serves. Each of you richly deserves the opportunity to earn a good life for yourself. The function of the school is to provide you with the experiences essential to your success. My negative thinking fades away as I walk among you and observe the heights of attainment to which you have lifted yourselves. Your displays of knowledge, analytical thinking, and self assurance are ade¬ quate proof that your feet have been placed to carry you in the right direction. To the graduates, I hope this beautiful pictorial record of your last year at Haysi High School will become a cherished possession; to those still in school, may it emphasize the voids in leadership that others must now step forward and fill. What you can do at Haysi High School as a student may be coming to an end. What you can do for your school is just beginning. Your interest and participation as adult citizens will forever remain essential. 8
