I urge you to develop your potential to the fullest, to make the most of every opportunity and do your best in whatever endeavor you may pursue. May you so live your life that you will bring honor and credit not only to yourself but to all your loved ones. My best wishes to you. Sincerely Paul W. Skeen B. A. Marshall University M. A. George Peabody College We would like to say that the annual staff has worked long and hard ... we have overcome and we, together, put out a good yearbook. Now when we look at our work, we get a good feeling - one we hope you ' ll share. It ' s what this book is all about. . . it’s called a natural high. ” Tony Hart Sandy Owens Carol Owens Joe Mullins Billy Powers Dexter Ramey Norma Colley Robin Colley Robin Powers Sonja Bartley Rockie Fuller Robin Johnston Thomas O’Quinn O’MumI It gives the annual staff great pleasure to present to you the 1974 edition of the THUNDERBOLT. The purpose of an annual is to give its viewer pleasure and bring back happy memories. We hope this annual serves its purpose well for it was put together with care and with the desire to please. We would like to extend our sincere appreciation to our sponsor, Mrs. Kathy Slusher. Without her out¬ standing help and guidance this publication would have surely been impossible. 5 We, the annual staff of Haysi High School, wish to show our appreciation to Sylvia Evans for her outstanding efforts toward the betterment of our school by dedicating our 1974 THUNDERBOLT to her. Though Sylvia has been here only two years, she has brought about remarkable changes in the attitudes of her students and acquaintances. She has stirred up student participation in school events. Through her efforts the Pep Club has come to be a truly functioning organization which is eager to cheer our athletes on to success. Sylvia has shown her students and others the meaning of art and beauty. Though she teaches English, her students somehow end up having a discourse in philosophy and experiencing a few ’’sessions” in art and music appreciation. Sylvia ' s main interests include philosophy and religion, which she enjoys discussing immensely. She also enjoys art, music, rapping with friends, and generally having a fine time. The annual staff would like to wish her a long and happy life in which to continue enjoying these and many other things. Sylvia, you ' ve been wonderful and as one means of showing you our appreciation we deidcate to you the 1974 edition of the Haysi High School THUNDERBOLT. Mhy Peace, Love and Happiness be yours throughout your life. 6 ADMINISTRATION Tenderly now let all men turn to the earth Nancy Newhall Q JjnCUv cJifJLs Mr. Mullins attended V. P. I. where he received his B. S. and M. S. degrees in Agricultural Education and Vocational Educa¬ tion. The events that accompany the approaching end of another school year are now a part of our busy school life. For more years than any member of our student body can remember, I have worked for the improve¬ ment of our school and community. It is not, therefore, strange that a th ousand thoughts and an equal number of memories should crowd my mind as I write this message. I must admit to moments in which I have entertained thoughts of doubt about the extent to which the school was fully meeting the needs of the students it serves. Each of you richly deserves the opportunity to earn a good life for yourself. The function of the school is to provide you with the experiences essential to your success. My negative thinking fades away as I walk among you and observe the heights of attainment to which you have lifted yourselves. Your displays of knowledge, analytical thinking, and self assurance are ade¬ quate proof that your feet have been placed to carry you in the right direction. To the graduates, I hope this beautiful pictorial record of your last year at Haysi High School will become a cherished possession; to those still in school, may it emphasize the voids in leadership that others must now step forward and fill. What you can do at Haysi High School as a student may be coming to an end. What you can do for your school is just beginning. Your interest and participation as adult citizens will forever remain essential. 8 MR. FINIS McCOY attended East Tennessee State University where he received his B. S. and M. A. degrees in English. Your efforts have been rewarded with this grad¬ uation. Your future success will depend greatly on how well you put to use your preparation thus far. If you plan to go into the world of work, always try to give the mos t difficult or the simplest task your very best. It is a rare person indeed who is able to get more out of life than he is willing to put into it. You are going into a cold world, but I am sure you will make it a better place for having been there. It has been an honor and a genuine pleasure to work with you seniors this year. I can only hope I contributed to a pleasant year for you. It has been gratifying to me to work with you. May the Divine Master shower his blessings upon you all the way through life. To the Class of 74 You face the greatest challenge of any graduat¬ ing group in history. You may well be confused by the inconsistent and contradictory actions of some of those who had an obligation to set you an example and instead have failed you; who exer¬ cised authority by the dictum Do as I say” rather than ”Do as I do. ” You have heard and seen evi¬ dence of wrong-doing all the way from the local to the national level. You may well wonder what role you should assume. I trust and believe that you will be able to dis¬ tinguish the genuine from hypocrisy, honesty, and integrity from the greed and lust for power and that you will choose the good rather than the evil. You are a unique human being, created in the image of God. You have intelligence and some freedom of choice. Live accordingly; be truthful regardless of the consequences. Be honest though you do not gain immediately by it. Laugh, love, and be merciful. Treat every human being as if he or she were your brother or sister. In the final analysis, you must bear responsibility for your own actions. You cannot justify them by the actions of others. It is not too late to build a better world. The task is great. You can do it! Qwe ts MRS. We were talking - about the space between us all And the people - who hide themselves behind a wall of illusion Never glimpse the truth - then it’s far too late - when they pass away . We were talking - about the love we all could share - when we find it To try our best to hold it there - with our love With our love - we could save the world - if they only knew. Try to realize it ' s all within yourself no-one else can make you change And to see you’re really only very small, and life flows on within you and without you. We were talking - about the love that’s gone so cold and the people Who gain the world and lose their soul - they don ' t know - they can ' t see - are you you one of them? When you ' ve seen beyond yourself then you may find, peace of mind, is waiting there - And the time will come when you will see we ' re all one, and life flows on within you and without you.
