HLAYSI HIGH SCHOOL public LIBRARY HAYS1, HAYSI, VIRGINIA IN MEMORIAM DAVID LEE O ' QUINN son of Mr. and Mrs. Arthur O’Quinn The One We Could Not Save A precious one from us is gone, A voice we loved is stilled, A place is vacant in our school That can never be filled. You are not dead - not lost But just gone on before, You live with us in memory, And will forever more. The loneliness in our hearts Is all that we can bear, We miss you more each day, Since God called you to his care. MAYS! PUBLIC LIBRARY HAYSI. VIRGINIA Yes, God took you home; it was his will, And in our hearts your memory livith still, But only a star shines over the grave Of the one we loved, and could not save. 2OCUNTW00D A 3 GARDEN | H 10 POCAHONTAS f H 28 SR. APTITUDE TEST 3 SCHOOL PICTURES 24 MERIT SCHOLARSHIP CO-EDITOR ' S NOTE We, the Co-Editors of the 1973 annual, hope that you enjoy this edition of the Thunderbolt. Our theme, Let Each Day Bring You Something New, Something Beautiful, Something All Your Own, expresses how we feel about our years at Haysi and how we look forward to the future. Our hope for this annual is that you will be affected in the same way. Our annual would not have been possible if it was not for the hard work and effort that the annual staff put forth. We also owe a lot of gratitude to Mr. Hay, who made this year wonderful. ANNUAL STAFF Debbie Sutherland Pauline Turner Phyllis Barton Colleen Counts Evelyn Bartley Sonia Edwards Cassie Mullins Ronnie Colley Dennis Vandyke Tames Colley FORWORD It gives the Annual Staff of 1973 great pleasure to present this edition of the THUNDERBOLT. Our reward for all the effort and hard work will be the pleasure you receive in turning each page. This Annual was meant for your enjoyment, and we hope it will give you memories you will cherish a lifetime. Our sincere thanks and gratitude go to our wonderful sponsor, Mr. R. C. Hay. For all the help and understanding guidance he has extended, we would like to say, Thanks for making this Annual a great success.” 4 LET EACH DAY BRING YOU ISSSFS s. ' AG . SOMETHING ALL YOUR OWN. 5 We, the annual staff of Haysi High, wish to express our appreciation to two teachers who, in their most sincere way, have given us many joyful memories that will always be dear to us. For all you have done for us and for being the outstanding people you are, we dedicate our 1973 THUN¬ DERBOLT to you. DEDICATED TO MISS LANA PUCKETT MR. BUTCH KISER 6 Miss Lana Puckett is doing her first year of teaching at Haysi High. She is most talented, and gives of those talents to make her commu¬ nity and school better. She plays piano for her church, sings in the choir, and enjoys camping, swimming, music, and handicrafts. She has won our respect and appreciation through her kind¬ ness, patience, and dedication to us, her stu¬ dents. We are so happy she decided to teach here and feel she is a definite asset to our school. Mr. Butch Kiser, a 1966 graduate of St. Paul High School, has been here at Haysi for three years. He coaches our Varsity Football and J. V. Basketball, Camping, trout fishing, and rab¬ bit hunting are some of his favorite hobbies. Although he is a sports enthusiast, football is his num ber one interest. Mr. Kiser and his wife, Judy, have one daughter, Christy. We realize the continuing effort he exerts as coach. In our estimation he has made an outstanding contrib¬ ution to our school. The end of the school year is in sight, and graduation is the next big event on the school calendar. For many of you the longest experience you have all shared, twelve years of educa¬ tion, will be coming to an end. This is a wonderful time for all of us to take a look toward tomorrow and to review the lessons of yesterday. Let us step back for a moment and ponder what the whole of your life might be. Today, as our Nation has been from the beginning, is a time of youth, of freshness and of opportunity. Do not forget that the Declaration of Independence was authored and signed by seventeen men who were still in their thirties; and three were in their twenties. No, you are not too young to begin making footprints in the sands of time. You in school today have the opportunity to be the best educated generation this Nation has ever produced. Your Accomplishments and the America which you create can be even greater than your dreams if you display the wisdom and spirit at your command. I have great confidence about the future for I am confident about you. Tomorrow, and I hope for a thousand tomorrows to come, I will watch your progress and take delight in the knowledge that I had some part in guiding you into the path that leads to happiness, self discovery, and success. You have much work remaining ahead of you. Success and happiness are not God-given rewards to be reaped by laggards and others weak of will and determination. They are attain¬ ments which you, in our great society, have the right to pursue. May I take this opportunity to wish you success in your pursuit and may the harvest you reap be worth the effort. 8 Mr. R. C. Hay attended East Tenn. State Uni¬ versity where he received his B.S. and M.A. degrees in Social Science. ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL ' S MESSAGE To the Class of ’73, I extend my very best wishes and sincere hope for a bright and prosperour future. You are embarking upon a life that will be filled with many obstacles. It is my hope that you have received the necessary preparation here at Haysi High to enable you to conquer these. I am sure that this ’73 graduating class is most aware of many of the needs of the society in which we live. In any society constructive change is necessary, and I am certain that you will accept the responsibility for making necessary changes. What you contribute to these changes is all important. When changes are made, make them not for the sake of change, but to improve upon what you are replacing. I know you are up to the task. It has been a pleasure for me to serve as your Assistant Principal the past three years. May God’s richest blessings be bestowed upon you. GUIDANCE MESSAGE Congratulations to the graduating class of 1973. Hopefully, your diploma represents the acquisi¬ tion of the knowledge and skills which will enable you to live useful and satisfying lives and you will continue to grow in wisdom and understanding in the years to come. May your generation build a world in which all will live together in peace and harmony. Sincere good wishes Mrs. Negatha Powers, Director of Guidance, attended Milligan and E.T.S.U. where she received her B.S.; she also attended Univ. of Va., V.P.I., and Univ. of Fla. where she received her M.A. WE APPRECIATE BETTY DEEL Guidance Counselor EVERETTE DAVIS N.Y.C.
