CO-EDITORS ' NOTE We, the co-editors hope that this 1972 edi- tion of the Thunderbolt will be enjoyed by all now, and later will serve to take you back through the many memories its pages hold. For this reason we think that our theme Those Were the Days is very appropriate ANNUAL STAFF Ronnie Compton Claudie Deel Stacy Deel Richard Edwards Janie Fuller Yvonne Gilbert James Johnson Junior Lester Jarrell O ' Quinn Eva Owens Rita Owens David Powers Vicki Raines Jodi Sutherland FOREWORD We, the annual staff, very proudly present the 1972 Thunderbolt with the wish that it will give some pleasure to each of you through the words and pictures it contains. We would like to express our sincere thanks to our sponsor, Kathy Slusher, who has worked with us and devoted her time and talents so freely. 4 PRINCIPAL ' S UECSASE ERD UAN MUUJN£ Mr. Mullins attended V. P. I. where he received his B. S. and M. S. in Agricultural Education and Vocational Education. Your years of arduous work at Haysi High School are rapidly coming to an end. These years are not seen nor are they noticed , but they are to be an essential part of your performance in life. In too many areas of life today is the philosophy present that somehow the achievements of success can be reached without the accomplishments of earnest toil and tribulation. I say to you, this can not be so. My associations with you as a teacher and as your principal will long be remem- bered and the thought cherished. I have watched you develop in educational com- petence, and I am pleased with what I see. You may not remold the world in a cast of your own making, but neither will I shudder at the thought of your taking your place in our adult society. After graduation, I hope you can and will return often to the school for a visit. With this pictorial record goes my most sincere wish that the Divine Hand will keep a firm and guiding hold solidly placed upon your shoulder. 6 Mr. R. C. Hay attended East Tenn. State University where he received his B. S. and M. A. degree in U. S. History and World Geography. ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL ' S MESSAGE You have reached one of many thresholds in life. This graduation from high school may just be the most important one, since what you do with the preparation you have received for life depends upon the path you choose to follow at this point in time. There will be those who feel high school is enough to propel them onward. Others will pursue higher education. Whatever path you choose, approach your objective with caution, retrospect, and humility as well as determinat ion. This is a fast-paced world, but compassion and respect for others are still treasured assets. The world owes you nothing; you owe a great deal to it. The challenge of the future is great. The re- sponsibility of seeing that our cherished way of life is sustained upon the shoulders of your generation. May you accept this responsibility with the determi- nation to make tomorrow a little better than today. GUIQANCE fiABSCAGB Mrs. Negatha Powers, Director of Guid- ance, attended Milligan and E. T. S. U. where she received her B. S. ; she also attended Univ. of Va. , V. I. P. , and Univ. of Fla. where she received her M. A. TO THE CLASS OF 1972 Your decision to finish high school is commendable. In many ways, your generation faces more challenges than any generation before you. Young people of both sexes are exerting more influence on all facets of our culture than at any other period of history. I sincerely hope that you will be equal to face the challenges, that you will use wisely your unprecedented freedom of choices, that you will remember that truth, honesty, integrity, wisdom, and the brotherhood of man are internal valves that never change. I felt like our team was much better than our record ind icated and in every close game it seemed that all the breaks went against us. We did lose some close games and the hardest teams we faced we played our best against them. One of our better games was against heavily-favored Clintwood. The score was 6-6 at half-time and it started to rain and our passing attack halted. Our brightest part of our season was our passing attack. Ronnie Compton completed 96 of 175 passes this season for a total of 1260 yards and 8 touchdowns. Ronnie had three good receiv- ers in Tony Hart (503), Jarrell O ' quinn (284), and Jerry Sutherland (240). I would like to thank all of our players for the fine effort put forth: An extra thanks goes to our seniors, the leaders of the Tigers. A coach never likes to lose but I feel that too much is based on won and lost records. It ' s always nice to have the super stars but as a coach , all I want is a boy that never quits. Our team was blessed with a group of young men this year that never quit. A quitter never wins and a win- ner never quits. RONNIE COMPTON Q.
