We have enjoyed com¬ piling this edition of our yearbook for you, and we hope that in the years to come, as you turn through the pages of the yearbook, you will recall the treasured memories of happy and worthy experiences, achievements, and the lasting friendship formed with the students and faculty while at H. Annual Staff jfureUmrii We, the Annual Staff of 1970-71, proudly present this edition of the Thunderbolt in order to preserve the happy and warm memories of the carefree, though busy, hours we have spent at H.H. S. A lot of hard work has gone into our annual and we hope each of you will truly enjoy it. May each glance at your classmates, friends, and teachers remind you of moments you wish to remember. All of us would like to give Mrs. Kathy Slusher our greatest thanks for being such a patient and understanding sponsor. We, the 1970-71 Annual Staff say, YOU ' LL LIKE IT! 5 r_... Always around when one ' s in need. 4 0 Me Beiritate (Hh Betty Beel We, the annual staff of Haysi High, would like to preserve, in our ' 71 Thunderbolt edition, the special memory of a teacher - one whom we know as warm and at all times ready to help students; one who laughs alot, works hard for students in her teaching and guidance capacities, and always has time for a smile. For these memories and more, we dedicate our annual to you, Mrs. Betty Deel, with our thank you for being what you are. will i III p w p JT BhHh k Bn i priimpafs Message ERDMAN MULLINS Mr. Mullins attended V.P.I. where he received his B.S. and M.S. in Agricultural Education and Vocational Education. Your years of arduous work at Haysi High School are rapidly com¬ ing to an end. These years are not seen nor are they noticed, but they are to be an essential part of your performance in life. In too many areas of life today is the philosophy present that somehow the achievements of success can be reached without the ac¬ complishments of earnest toil and tribulation. I say to you, this can not be so. My associations with you as a teacher and as your principal will long be remembered and the thoughts cherished. I have watched you develop in educational competence, and I am pleased with what I see. You may not remold the world in a cast of your making, but neither will I shudder at the thought of you taking your place in our adult society. After graduation, I hope you can and will return often to the school for a visit. With this pictorial record goes my most sincere wish that the Divine Hand will keep a firm and guiding hold solidly placed upon your shoulder. 8 Mr. R. C. Hay attended East Tennessee State University where he received his B.S. and M. A. degrees in U. S. History and World Geography Mrs. Negatha Powers, Director of Guidance, attended Miligan and E.T.S.U. where she received her B.S.; she also attended Univ. of Va. , V.P.I. , and Univ. of Fla. , where she received her M. A. Assistant principal s Message . . . Mankind has struggled with limited success to achieve perfection in his worldly existence. This struggle has been marked by victories and defeats. To a lesser degree you have had similar experiences in your educational life. It is my hope for you that the frustrations in the life that faces you will be fewer and the triumphs many. Keep in mind that to obtain success you must be able to share the respon¬ sibility as well as enjoy the privilege. We should seek perfection, but seek it with moderation, or we destroy ourselves. You have been a wonderful teacher to me. You have taught me the true meaning of service, and I am eternally grateful. If I have given you but one ray of enlightenment with the same impact that you have taught me, I feel I have succeeded. The future is great and promising. Put all your energies and talents to whatever you wish to achieve and success will be yours. K Qfntiimnce Message . . Dear Seniors, Your graduation from high school will be your third giant step forward in your education. Your first giant step was leaving the security of your family and entering the bewildering world of the first grade; your second was entering high school. This third giant step will require the most adjustment on your part. You will have to make more of your own decisions and you won ' t have a textbook with all the answers. You won ' t have a handbook which lists the do ' s and don ' ts. You ' ll work your schedule out by yourself. I sincerely hope that you have formulated your own guide lines; that external discipline has taught you internal discipline; that you have the capacity to love and be loved; the inner strength to accept disappointment as well as gladness, sorrow as well as joy. Best wishes for a full and happy life. If I can be of any help at any time, please contact me. G- ouo e.£$ 9 LEFT: Patsy Kilgore Secretary RIGHT: Violet Tarwater Librarian B.S. She has four children who are all in school. Mrs. Deel decided to come back as a senior and finish her education in order to get a good job to help support her family - she is taking business courses. She is tied for first place in her graduating class with an average of 4.04. The students average is based on a scale with the highest score an A or 4. , so Mrs. Deel’s average is better than an A. After Today there is always Tomorrow. Progress opens her golden hand to reveal the promises of the years to come. Bak tiict nr tan Jennifer Ann CnlUui S Jennifer has been one of the top students of her class. She is taking college prep courses and is going to attend V.P.I. in Blacksburg, Virginia. She plans to enter in the fall. Her average is 4. 05 which makes her tied for first place in the senior class. Jennifer is a straight A student, and an active participant in various clubs. She was selected to the Society of American High Schools ' Most Outstanding Students. Last fall Jennifer was the captain of our Haysi cheerleaders, and is now a basketball cheer¬ leader. With far-seeing eyes we build and hope and plan. Yesterday is but a memory; Today is soon gone, but To¬ morrow lives forever. 21 J alutatnmn Karen is third in her class with an average of 3.85. She is one of the co-editors of the school paper, an active member of several clubs, and an avid sports fan. Karen, who plans to enter college after graduation, was chosen as one of American High School ' s Outstanding Students. We play in the Lonesome Pine District and our opponents were usually bigger and more experienced than we. I feel that we played all of our opponents on a pretty even basis this year and we bowed out to a couple of big teams in the last few minutes of the game. I feel that this year’s Tigers was the best football team that Hay si has ever had. At the beginning of the year, we set two goals: the first was to win more games than any other Haysi team and the second was to win the Sportsmanship Award. We did win the Sportsmanship Award and I feel very proud of the Tiger’s actions on the gridiron. Our defense was much stronger than it had been in the past and our offense moved the ball much better than in the past. Clayton Justice made the 2nd team All-district halfback this year. He is only the 2nd player in Haysi’s history to make the team. I feel that we had some other boys that should have made the team. Kenneth O ' Quinn also set a district and a Southwest Virginia record this year by kicking a 45-yard field goal. Kenneth has the talent and ability to play football for any college. As a team, we were much improved this year and a much better balanced team than in the past. We, the coaching staff thank you, the players, for the excellent effort that you have given us this year. One thing that we would like for you boys to remember is, Winning isn ' t every¬ thing, but the will to win is. 95 JERRY STANLEY Quarterback Senior CLAYTON JUSTICE Halfback Senior KENNETH O’QUINN Halfback Senior RICHARD NOWLIN Tackle Senior MARK SUTHERLAND Tackle Senior GARY O’QUINN Fullback Senior RICK ARRINGTON Center Senior RICK MULLINS Tackle Senior DANNY RASNAKE Guard Senior 96 MICKEY TAYLOR End Senior JARRELL O’QUINN End Junior PAUL McKINNEY Fullback Junior DENNIS O ' QUINN Linebacker Junior BENNY FLETCHER Tackle Junior CARTER HARRISON Halfback Soph.
