The Senior Class of 1969 Proudly Present 1969 Thunderbolt Haysi High School Haysi, Virginia HAYSI PUBLIC LIBRARY HAYSI, VIRGINIA TABLE OF CO-EDITORS FOREWORD DEDICATION ADMINISTRATION Happiness Is . . CONTENTS FACULTY ACTIVITIES CLASSES ELEMENTARY ORGANIZATIONS ATHLETICS ADVERTISEMENTS Co-editors, Thana Taylor and Geneva Davis CO-EDITORS’ NOTE We, the co-editors of this 1969 Thunderbolt, wish to personally express our sincere wish that all of you will enjoy this edition of our yearbook. Upon seeing the ’69 Thunderbolt, we agreed that all of our long, arduous, and occasionally desperate, hours of trying to give this yearbook completeness, originality ... uniqueness were recompensed. We ear¬ nestly hope that not only this moment but all the moments to come will prove to be as happy for you as the many, many moments gone into the creation of this yearbook have been for us. We, on behalf of the annual staff, feel that happi¬ ness definitely is the 1969 Thunderbolt. CO-EDITORS, Gr£ £ Q ANNUAL STAFF FOREWORD We, the annual staff, present our 1969 Thunderbolt. We would like to thank our sponsor, Mrs. Kathy Slusher, for her unending patience and devotion. With¬ out her understanding, this publication would have been impossible. Our annual this year has been a lot of headaches and worry. We selfishly encroached on certain people for their help and they unselfishly gave it to us. We hope it will be worth our efforts. The theme for our annual this year is HAPPINESS IS and we want to assure you that happiness js presenting the 1969 Thunderbolt to you. DEDICATION Because of your understanding as a teacher, your respect for others, your witty ways, and your earnest effort to make the best better, we the Senior Class of 1969, dedicate the ’69 Thunderbolt to you - MAYNARD OWENS We hope that you will view this small tribute, not as the cumulating award of your respected profession, rather a rededication in your efforts to improve the minds of those you come in contact with. Thanks for always meeting us with a smile. Mr. Owens enjoys teaching at H.H.S. Mr. Owens enjoys fishing as ' well as hunting. At home with daughter, Robin. Administration SUPERINTENDENT’S MESSAGE PAUL W. SKEEN received his A.B. from Marshall University and his M.A. from Peabody College. I congratulate you on the completion of your high school education. I hope you will continue your edu¬ cation beyond the high school level. Many educa¬ tional opportunities are now available within our own area, the Southwest College, Clinch Valley College, and area vocational and technical schools. The deci¬ sion is yours, and I hope your decision will find you enrolling in some learning center. I extend to you my best wishes and a success in your field of endeavor. Sincerely, PAUL W. SKEEN PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE C. C. Short attended East Tennessee State University. He also attended the Uni¬ versity of Tennessee where he received his B.S., V. P. I. and the University of Virginia where he received his M.A. Dear Seniors, I congratulate you on successfully completing your high school program. The faculty and I have enjoyed working with you as you advanced to adult¬ hood, both mentally and physically. Your progress through high school has been marked with many worthwhile contributions to the school program; your individual accomplishments as students and athletes have become a part of the school - a part you will be happy to recall as the years go by. You are now ready to leave and we sincerely hope that your tenure in high school wiM make the road to success a little smoother and the attainment of goals easier. Good Luck C. C. SHORT Principal ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL TOMMY STREET Hiwassee A. A., E. T. S. U. B. S. and M. A. MESSAGE I have certainly enjoyed working with the students of HHS since I returned this year. I feel this has been a fruitful year for everyone here. We have profited by our mistakes and shortcomings and will think of them before committing others. I sincerely hope that each senior has set his goal to go higher in his education and training - there is no room at the bottom; higher goals are required if you wish not to be smothered by the masses. Assistant Principal A MESSAGE FROM THE GUIDANCE OFFICE MILLIGAN, E.T.S.U., B.S. Univ. of Va., V.P.I., Univ. of Florida, M.A. To the Seniors of 1969: Your graduation from high school marks another important milestone in your life: You will have completed twelve years of formal training. I sincerely hope that this experience has taught you more than reading, writing and arithmetic - that you have grown in the wis¬ dom of human relationship, which developed a strong sense of moral integrity, and mature human dignity. Your education must not end here. In order to survive, to be happy and productive, you must continue to learn. You will be faced with many alternatives and many decisions for so long as you live. Your decisions may not always be the right ones - all humans make mistakes, but if I could give you one parting gift, it would be that you have the “courage to be” - the courage to face each crisis without faltering, the courage to admit mistakes and make new decisions, the courage to endure failure and disappointments without becoming bitter and disillusioned, the courage to love and be loved, the courage to weep and the courage to laugh, the courage to live, and the courage to die. We shall miss you. You have made an imp rint on all those with whom you have come in contact. Our interest in you will not cease upon your graduation; your achievements will be our achievements, your failures our failures. Your cumulative folders will be moved from one filing case to another, but you will always have a claim on us for any service we are able to render. A TREASURY OF THOUGHTS FOR 1968-69 LEISURE What is this life, if full of care, We have no time to stand and stare No time to stand beneath the boughs And stare as long as sheep or cows No time to see, when woods we pass, Where squirrels hide their nuts in grass. No time to see, in broad daylight, Streams full of stars, like skies at night No time to turn at Beauty ' s glance And watch her feet, how they can dance No time to wait till her mouth can Enrich that smile her eyes began. A poor life this if, full of care, We have no time to stand and stare. W. R. DAVIES It is not just as we take it, This mystical world of ours, Life ' s field will yield as we make it A harvest of thorns or of flowers GOETHE SATURDAY You may have cares and duties There are dozens of things to be done But don ' t let the day come to an end Without some laughter and fun Remember this, - that very little is needed to make a happy life.
