We hope that these pages have fond and treasured memories. As co-editors we wish first of all to thank the staff and our sponsor, Mr. Fuller, for their work and assistance. We owe a special thanks to Binky Rush who took many of our pictures for us. Creating a yearbook is a long and grueling task but a rewarding one. We hope our addition of the activities section will win your approval and give you the pleasure we intended it to. We feel we have added something to the THUNDERBOLT and it can be summed up in one word--UNIQUENESS. CO-EDITORS Ct y 4 ANNUAL STAFF FOREWORD We, the Annual Staff, present the 1968 THUNDERBOLT. We wish to thank our sponsor, Mr. Larry Fuller, for his understanding and help. This year we decided to make the annual unique not only by its cover but by its contents as well. With the addition of an entirely new section,. ACTIVITIES, we hoped to show the students and their organiza¬ tions in action. We feel we have not only made our yearbook unique in appearance, but also unique in its ability to provoke pleasant memories. 5 Busy at work. Devotion as a teacher. Enjoyment of life. Because of your devotion to teaching, your friendly smile and cheerful greeting, and your infinite patience and understanding, we the senior class of 1968, dedicate this issue of the Thunderbolt to you - MR. JOSEPH S. (JACK) COLLEY MR. JOSEPH S. (JACK) COLLEY DEDICATION May this dedication serve to impress upon you that your tolerance of the foibles of youth profoundly touches all who have been recipients of it. 6 SUPERINTENDENT’S MESSAGE PAUL W. SKEEN received his A.B. from Marshall Uni¬ versity and his M.A. from Pedbody College. I congratulate you on having completed the necessary requirements for graduation from the Haysi High School. I feel it is an honor. It is an honor not given to you, but one which you have earned. I urge you to continue your education after graduation. I urge you to develop your potential to the fullest. I urge you to make the most of every opportunity. Finally, I urge you to do your best in whatever en¬ deavor you may pursue. May you always be the type of person who will bring honor and credit not only to yourself but to those who have known you. Good luck to each of you. PAUL W. SKEEN 8 PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE C. C. Short attended East Tennessee State University. University of Tennessee where he received his B. S.; V.P.I. and the University of Virginia where he received his M. A. Dear Seniors, By completing your program of studies in high school, you have taken a major step forward. Whether this is the end of formal education or just the beginning is now in your hands. A tour of duty in the military service is in store for many of you while others will enter college. A few of you will complete the step to adult¬ hood by marrying and seeking permanent employment. It is hoped that the training you have received here at Haysi High will guide you in making decisions which will contribute to your welfare, health and happiness. C. C. Short Principal 9 ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE NORMAN MULLINS attended Lincoln Memorial University where he received his B.S. degree. I hope that the five years you have spent at Haysi High School will be the basic founda¬ tion that you will need for a successful life. Days spent in high school are usually reflected on as the happiest days of one’s life. I am sure that the school, in some way, has been a, help to each of you. It is my fondest wish that the Lord will bless each of you and that your life will be a long happy one. SECRETARY Miss Patsy Kilgore 10 Milligan, E.T.S.U. B.S. Univ. of Va., V.P.I., Univ. of Florida, M.A. To the Graduation Class of 1968 This perhaps the most difficult “farewell” message that I have ever attempted to write. You, the class of 1968, are a very special class for many reasons. I have known many of you since you entered the first grade and have observed your progress and growth through each of your twelve grades; I be¬ came interested in each new member as you joined the original group. You are in many ways a most original and unusual class. I have watched you meld into a fairly close- knit unit and yet, in general, you have been able to maintain, to a high degree, your own individuality. This is a most difficult accomplishment and is indicative of strength of character, courage, and a sense of personal worth. Keep them always. Individually and collectively, you have many talents. I hope you will continue to develop them and will use them wisely and constructively for your own advancement and that of your fellow men. I cannot say “farewell” to you. I can only say that my prayers and best wishes will go with you wherever your pathway leads. Let me hear from you and do not hesitate to let me know if I can help you in any way. For the soul is dead that slumbers. And things are not what they seem. Life is real! Life is earnest! And the grave is not its goal; Dust thou art, to dust returnest. Was not spoken of the soul. Not enjoyment, and not sorrow. Is our destined end or way; But to act, that each tomorrow Find us farther than today. Art is long, and Time is fleeting, And our hearts, though stout and brave, Still, like muffled drums, are beating Funeral marches to the grave. In the world ' s broad field of battle, In the bivouac of Life, Be not like dumb, driven cattle! Be a hero in the strife! Trust to Future, howe ' er pleasant! Let the dead Past bury its dead! Act, -- act in the living Present! Heart within, and God o’erhead! Lives of great men all remind us We can make our lives sublime, And, departing, leave behind us Footprints on the sands of time; Footprints, that perhaps another. Sailing o ' er life ' s solemn main, A forlorn and shipwrecked brother Seeing, shall take heart again. Let us, then, be up and doing, With a heart for any fate; Still achieving, still pursuing, Learn to labor and to wait.
