Class Prophecy While sitting in my living room watching television my thoughts wondered 20 years ahead to my graduation class. The Haysi Bridge broke down only a few days ago, and I saw Rodney, the Engineer, trying to figure out whether to start at the top or the bottom first. His assistant, Lou Rat- liff, was standing by patiently trying to get a word in. An old Model T passed by with Loraine Counts and her one family ball team, six girls and five boys, heading for the 1971 County Finals. Just then I heard a loud roar overhead. I looked up and saw George Wright in a Jet headed for Hollywood to star in Wild Man from Borneo. Hanging onto the tail of the Jet was Lorraine Burchette, who is Carmen Mirando’s biggest rival. Tuning in on WSM, I saw Lee Compton, the nation’s No. I hillbilly singer, making his recording of Hickory Nut Waltz. Faye Long, the famous Base Fiddle Player of West Point, was guest of honor. The program was interrupted by banging buck- ets, mops and brooms, and George Ball appeared singing Rag Mop. The Master of Cermonies made the following announcements: Peggy Sutherland is replacing Miss Browning, Eugene Steele is replacing Mr. Tarwater as coach, and Fern Rose will take over the classes of both Mary Cain and Homer D. Willis at Haysi. I switched the button to WLSI, and saw Imogens Stanley, roaming the streets in Middlesboro, Ky. hunting for high alti- tude and Jean Lowery hunting for that man. An advertisement flashed across the screen advertising Jimmy Hay’s Toni Home- Permanents, and showed Nadine Beverly doing the family washing using Charles Woods’ home-made soap. It was time for the news, and Billy Ray Rose, the commen- tator, gave information on the following members of our class: Russell Engle was elected to take John L. Lewis’s place as head of the C. I. 0. Forester Mullins defeated Thomas Dew- ey as Governor of New York. The president pinned the Purple Heart on Beau Johnson. The marriage of Mabel Hall and Nick Hilton Jr., takes place in Hollywood. Mary Mullins received a raise as concert manager of Margaret Truman. June Harlowe, famous Martin Bomberette player, has completed her fifth year of successful playing. Mary Lou Jones is now starring as a chorus girl in Guys and Dolls. Dennis Puckett of Barnum aid Bailey Circus, will be at the Haysi Theater Monday for a per- formance . I turned off the television to go shopping. As I passed, the Town Hall loud voices aroused my curosity. Peeping in the window, I saw Benny Arrington before the judge pleading, for his divorce on grounds of desertion. I walked on down the street and met Jimmy O’quin taking the same girl to the Sat- urday evening movie. On my way home, I passed the Arrington’s home and saw Paul, a henpecked husband, doing the dishes. I was glad to know that my classmates had reached their goal in life. 15
