f 2 i alone can do nothing. i am a fragment; a part of the whole. alone i am powerless; bereft of movement, yet united with others similar to myself (yet distinct in themselves) i am capable of deeds unthought of, and of feats undreamed of . . . i am personal inspiration; a spark that starts the gears turning, the shaft spinning, and the wheels rolling . . . the force of human movement . . . each individual in unison with the whole. this is the stuff of which man is made . . . 4 . . . because I am involved in mankind. For Whom The Bell Tolls No man is an island entire of itself. Every man is a piece of the continent, a part of the main. If a clod be washed away by the sea, Europe is the less, as well as if a promontory were, as well as if a manor of thy friends or of thine own were. Any man’s death diminishes me, because I am involved in mankind. Therefore never send to know for whom the bell tolls. It tolls for thee. John Donne 5 INTRODUCTION Everyday we are involved. .%■ . . ... For the students and faculty, this year has been the end of the beginning. With construction fast becom¬ ing a thing of the past, or at least not of the future, we have turned our eyes to other things. Together we have turned the concept on which Hay- field was founded into a reality. The subschool sys¬ tem has worked, and though we still have our “student numbers,” there is a feeling of individuality which comes from being called by your own first name. Our newness can no longer be an excuse. We are expected to be the best and, ... we have triumphed. 7 INTRODUCTION 8 . . . together! We won the football game last night! It was a group endeavor. Sure there were those eleven guys out on the field. They handled the ball. They scored the touch downs, but didn’t the cheerleaders and drill team also play a part? And that spirited bunch up in the stands, they had their role. “Everybody” didn’t cheer with one voice. We were individuals. Everybody on the football team didn’t throw that long bomb in the third quarter, but they all had their job. Who can say that the interior linemen weren’t just as important as the quarterback or the ends? Each man had his own role of immense importance. If anyone had fallen down on the job, we wouldn’t have succeeded, but none could have pulled it off by themselves. It took the team, the whole group, everybody ... 9 STUDENT LIFE 10 JR ' • -up ; T Vp«r STUDENT LIFE Throughout this year at Hayfield everyday activities have played a large part in the students’ education. There are those things that just cannot be taught in a classroom. These things can only be learned through experience and each day is crowded with enough experiences for everybody. Some teach us to be ourselves, our own men; others go only to strengthen the ties that bind us together in a cooperative unit, a moving, striving whole. 11 The Clown Prince “I never saw him before Cast King Absolute. The whole group working together. It can not be done any other way. Any member of the team may be a star, but without all the other team members he would be nothing. Working, striving, straining, push¬ ing right next to each other, as a unit, is the only way to function efficiently. Each man has his own job, and this job must be carried out. Each person as an individual surging force, with another being, similar to himself, driven toward the same goal, makes a team. This is sports! 23 Kneeling: G. Riser, T. Schulte, managers. A fall schedule composed of dual, triangular, district and meets enabled obr first cross country team to gain valuable experience fdr the years ahead. You might ask ' what it’s like to run cross f: If you like to run and have a fierce desire to yourself and to win, then this is your sport, country can be a valuable sport to anyone bec it increases one’s endurance. I Hayfield has gone through another year of sharing gyms with other schools and always being the guest. Towards the end of Feb¬ ruary we were proud to be able to open the doors of our gym to other schools from the state of Virginia. It was a privilege to host the Regional and State Wrestling Tourna¬ ments and the Regional Basketball Tourna¬ ment. No longer do we have to be visitors; we can be visited. 44 ORGANIZATIONS Through the various organizations at Hay- field, students learn to be individuals as they search for a meaningful experience. They also become members of group endeavors and team efforts. There are leaders and followers; each with his own special place. Executive Council: Bottom Row: D. Lovett, R. Evans, P. With the ratification of a Constitution, the chartering of several or¬ ganizations, the setting up of a cabinet, and the sponsoring of many activities, the SCA has attained that goal. The Harvester Staff was fortunate this year to obtain its own camera and strobe unit, and most impor¬ tant, a yearbook room. However, the staff suffered the usual prob¬ lems. They had difficulty identify¬ ing pictures, writing copy, thinking of headlines and captions, and getting everything in order for the deadlines. Co-editors Betsy Reed¬ er and Ed Collins, and sponsors Mrs. Thomason and Mr. Mason, together with the rest of the year¬ book staff, went through a great deal of turmoil and torture to produce a yearbook that reflects student life at Hayfield during the 1969-70 school year. Debate and Math Teams Compete The Debate Club spent a great deal of time this year in prepara¬ tion for their debates on the ques¬ tion “Resolved: Congress should prohibit unilateral military inter¬ vention in foreign affairs.” The club’s purpose was to expand each debator’s knowledge of the two sides of the issue and to en¬ able him to debate from either side regardless of personal view¬ point. Through debating, the teams have achieved these ob¬ jectives and have learned the importance of the spoken word. Hayfield’s Math Team represented the school in academic competi¬ tion and promoted mathematical proficiency. Under the direction of Mr. Edie and team captain, Tom Bunch, the Math Team devoted long hours to developing the skills of accuracy and skill necessary for competition. 57 DEBATE AND MATH TEAMS STUDIO THEATER Studio Theater: Bottom Row: T. This year, the theater presented excel¬ lent performances of “Sandbox”, “The Clown Prince of Wander¬ lust”, “Animal Farm”, and “You’re a Good Man, Charlie Brown.” The Drama Club was organized on the premise that it would be a springboard into the high school Studio Theater for all those inter¬ ested in theatrical performances. The Shakespearean Club was formed to advance the under¬ standing and appreciation of the literary art of William Shake¬ speare, to foster genuine intel¬ lectual curiosity, and to prepare members for further studies of Shakespeare. Try-out s were held, and a panel of four teachers selected the organiza¬ tion’s new members. The girls, and occasionally a few boys, worked on routines combining ballet and modern jazz dancing. Under the guidance of Mr. Single- ton, and the assistance of Miss Batten, the members exercised and danced to both jazz music and the songs of today. AFS and Junior Representatives Plan for Future The American Field Service chap¬ ter at Hayfield is definitely an organization of the future. The first of its several long range plans is to provide homes for foreign AFS students returning to their native lands after completing a nationwide tour. In the fall of 1971, the club hopes to have a foreign student at Hayfield and a Hayfield student in a corresponding AFS member school. The AFS hopes that this exchange program will improve international relation¬ ships through understanding; the only way. Even in a school operating with¬ out grade or class distinction, there are certain activities which must be conducted within a cer¬ tain grade level. This year, the Junior Class Representatives planned such activities, which in¬ cluded the Ring Dance, Senior privileges, and the Prom. American Field Service: Bottom Row: A. Boland, J. The unification of Hayfield has been our endeavor this year. Through all facets of school life — clubs, sports, stu¬ dent governments, eating, working, playing — we have sought to make Hayfield a well- known school which we can be proud to attend. 86 87 UNDERCLASS Twinkle, twinkle little star — Lafyette pres’dent is what I are. On the outside, Madison Hall appears to be a sub¬ school of Hayfield in it’s second year with about 500 students, its own principal, its own office, and its own guidance system. However, by looking deeper into this structure, it is readily seen to be a group which showed an active and competitive spirit throughout the school year. The student government of Madison Hall worked tirelessly in fund-raising and promoting spirit in the entire student body of Hayfield. The money raised was used to improve and beautify their school. Many traditions have already been established by Madison Hall. This is true of the Slave Auction and Slave Day, Sadie Hawkins Week, and the Spring Fling. Spirit drives took place in the form of balloon and ribbon sales and colors day. Other activities of this year in¬ cluded the Harvest Hawk Hop, candy cane sale, and Madison Hall Week. The students of Madison Hall were given every op¬ portunity of a new and growing school. The faculty gave them modern methods of learning through Hay- field’s magnificent facilities. They were also given guidance and many privileges. In return, the stu¬ dents of Madison Hall gave their time and energy to the growth and fame of Hayfield. They did this through participation in sports, clubs, drama and many other activities. Madison Hall students truly stood out in the endeavor to make Hayfield Number 1. 107 MADISON HALL Miss Maguire works hard to aid Madison Hall stu¬ dents in the decisions they must make. Mrs. Aiken always greets students with a smile when they come to her office for counseling. Mrs. Langford serves as Mona Lisa and secretary all wrapped up in one. As a result of the size of our student body, close coordination and communi¬ cation has been carefully maintained with various or¬ ganizations within the school and community. Since co-curricular activi¬ ties are learning experi¬ ences for students, tech¬ niques in leadership have been stressed through a combined effort of the Fair¬ fax Hall faculty and the Stu¬ dent Cooperative Associa¬ tion. Advantageous Although through most of the year the Phy¬ sical Education Department has been ham¬ pered by a lack of facilities, they have made great strides to overcome this handicap. With complete dedication they have provided a meaningful program. The corrective gymns were cramped into double duty as were halls and parking lots. But, now in our new gym, these are all things that seem to be of a time long past. We have only to look to the future in a gym large enough for each individual to do just that. Using the closed-circuit T.V. and re¬ sources from the community, they have provided several worthwhile surprises for the students. This situation was advantageous be¬ cause it resulted in good student- teacher relationships and it en¬ abled the teacher to coordinate the two subjects, English and History. With special cooperation between all facets of the Fine Arts, including Art, Drama, and Music, students have been provided with a wide range of studies on which to center their exploring interests. This department also sponsored the MADD festival in April combining music, art, drama, and dance. Through this and several other projects, students have found their own individual talents. It has tried to present opportunities that the girls might not have, otherwise. In sewing classes, skills range from sewing a simple apron in the seventh grade to making a tailored wool suit and coat in the eleventh grade. However, the department has not been idle in the field of cookery. The support is not always as easy to secure as it might seem, but with sound logic and a little gentle per¬ suasion, Mr. Worley has helped to make us well on our way to reaching the destination of being one.
