It is located on the site of property which was originally owned by George Washington. After the Revolutionary War, he sold it to his cousin, Lund Washington, who had been manager of Mt. Vernon. It was Lund and his wife Elizabeth Foote Washington who built the lovely Hayfield Manor House in the late 1700 ' s. Although the house was destroyed by fire in 1917, its foundations still remain. Hayfield ' s name came from the spreading fields at the edges of its sweeping lawns. Also in the site was a formal boxwood garden that was planted by George Washington, and was said to be one of the finest in the state of Virginia. The famous sixteen-sided barn which stood on the property also burned in 1967. EUGENE F. WARE 6 OUR BEGINNINGS WERE OFTEN DIFFICULT BUT REWARDING Daring to begin . . . our first year at Hayfield is the story of a beginning. At first, there was nothing but an administration, a faculty, and a student body. Even with these prerequisites we could not call ourselves a school, but almost immediately, the spirit and ideas, these things which really make a school, began to be seen. Slowly at first, then with gathering speed, Hayfield gained an individuality, and we began to have pride. Our spirit gradually increased; it hit a peak when we finally moved into our own building in January. With our new building came the satisfaction of having a foundation from which we could develop, and the realization that our future could take any form and direction we wished. No matter what these beginnings mean to others, they are very meaningful to us. Whether successes or failures, we have begun. 7 8 FACULTY AND ADMINISTRATION The faculty is the framework of a school. They are what keeps the school going, the driving force. Perhaps the most trying problem the members of our faculty have had to face was the lack of available facilities in our host school. Although now settled and provided with better equipment, the faculty worked long hours and under great pres¬ sure in the beginning of the year. By working closely with the students, the faculty has given us the tools with which to acquire knowledge, the greatest gift of all. 9 Mr. Floyd W. Worley, Principal Confronted with the many problems of opening, organizing, and running a new school, our principal, Mr. Worley, has demonstrated what perserverance and determination can accomplish. These obstacles were compounded by the vastness of our school and the fact that the initial semester was spent in a host school, where facilities were cramped and activities hampered. With the invaluable assistance of Dr. Wilson, the school has become a success. Dr. James R. Wilson, Associate Principal 10 Mr. John G. It was the production of one of the largest complexes for intermediate and high school students anywhere, and it was a pleasing perfor¬ mance. There was the rapid unification of the student body, a commendable adjust¬ ment at Edison, and an even finer adjust¬ ment at Hayfield. All this is something to cherish and to remember with pride. i • 35 FAIRFAX HALL President: Dee Silverthorn 36 SEVENTH GRADE Susan Adams Diana Adcock CHntoif’ATferi ,£jl en Almon d -Ga grqanne Ander s Paul Anderson Kenn eth A rnold Evelyn Arocho .Rodney Bagan Leslie Bain bridge Ronald Bank s Jean Barbour Earn Bell T+ieresa Bilbrey Deborah Blackwell Karen Blundon Mark Boldio Erna BoTton“ ' Patricia Bo wen Tim Boyer Jiillie Kay Boyette St even Brady Tony Brannan George Bray Cathy Breary Dolores Broe William Broomall Tawana Brown Qeborah Buck S a ncTraTJu me F George Butler J.ulie Butler usan Butler -Ja nnine Carlto n Jimmy Caudill 37 Willis Chancellor Kathleen C hapman Penny Liar - Elizabeth Clement Lvnne Collin s Lance Coscia Janice Crawford Bill Danner _Carolvn Davies DianneTUavis ' Roxanne Davis Laurie Delaire Sharon Dem int Kathy Denson John Desmond J ame 15evie rs Donna Dittmer tecky U omingue Wilson Donald Fred Dotso n Adrian Doyle Michele Eastridge Patti e Edso n ■Lei th Elder D ebbie EM iott ETieen English” Joyce ErTcIcson John Eskew 7 my F iebelkorn Anthony FieTcnm Brian Finnel l Steven Flem jna L jiura Fletcher T eresa FoJey BettyForbes Michele Fowler William Frazier Gary Freeman Norma Frye 38 am es Fu llerton lvfartFT3 ns -G hpry| Harria -4XkJu_£arland - B i11 Gentry Michael Gibbs _A[etha Golas MTEe GoT3 5 Samuel Gonzales G arQlGood PaulaGrahs . Even more than our daily school life, these par¬ ticular events will remain as part of our- our life-long remembrances of significance. 161 We waited a long time for opening day. There were frustations . . . the de¬ lays . . . .but when that first day rolled around, it was worth it. The ribbon cutting . . . the doors opening officially for the first time, these are just memories now, but the spirit and pride of school still linger on . . OPENING DAY 162 The New Velvet Haze “ORANGE CREATION” The teachers had fun, too. 163 SPIRIT WEEK A GREAT SUCCESS Spirit Week, sponsored by Madison Hall, did just what it was intended to do—it boosted school spirit to new highs. Orange and white victory links were sold, and the chain was a tangible measure of spirit since it grew to almost five hun¬ dred feet. Orange and white garters appeared everywhere, and a door decorating con test was held and was won by homeroom 103. The week was climaxed by the basketball game with Edison, where the school spirit was tremendous. Homeroom 103 won the door decorating contest Donna Martin, Kitty Emrico, and Kim Flinchum model outfits. A most popular outfit . . . FASHIONS Hayfield ' s first dramatic production, Chamber Music. The fashion show, sponsored by Simplicity Pattern Company, and put on by the Home Economics Department, was given for the girls of all four schools. Various spring fashions were presented and modeled by girls attending Mayfield. The play. Chamb er Music, was a production of the drama department under the direction of Mr. Meyers. The cast, performing at Ft. Hunt High School, received a good rating in the one act play competition held there. It was Hayfield ' s first dramatic production, and both the cast and Mr. Meyers did a fine job. CHAMBER MUSIC 167 , O ' ■dr ' ,(% X Sc ' y .. A s A v v O ? But to all it was a turning point, a beginning. Indi¬ vidually and collectively, the members of the faculty and student body this year have taken the first steps and laid the foundation for the years to come. Just as the edifice remains after the builders are gone, the tradi¬ tions which we originated here will remain after we are gone. The year has come to an end; the traditions are begun . . . we, the founders, have reason to be proud. THE END OF THE BEGINNING ' mMm 174 . . . AND AHEAD We have dared to begin; the frame¬ work is completed. We hope to meet future challenges with the same spirit and will that has brought us through this first year. 175 The HARVESTER staff would like to thank the following people: Mr. and Mrs. Howard Marler, for their excellent photographic help; Mr. Herbert Lelansky, for girls ' and boys ' basketball action pictures; Alston Studios, for the student and faculty portraits; and Mr. Jim Ellis, our Hunter representative.
