It was the year of the energy crisis, so high school athletics were cancelled for a two week period, and the wrestling team didnit get to compete in the Alden Invitational Tournament. Also due to a mix-up the squad only wrestled in eleven dual meets rather than the allowable twelve. So because of these two factors some of the individual records were not as high as they have been in other years. The 1973-74 season would have to be high-lighted by the fact that the team finished in 2nd place in District II Wrestling Competition. Albert Lea placed 1st: Hayfield 2nd with 79 team pointsg Austin 3rd with 77 team points. This is the first time a small school has finished that high in District H. The loss of the seniors off of this yearis squad will create quite a hole to fill. Don Cilbertson has wrestled varsity for 3 years, Russ Wildeman for 2 years, Wade Kester for 4 years and Mark Bauman for 5 years. Not only their experience will be missed but also their leadership: Mark Bauman. Russ Wildeman and Wade Kes- ter were tri-captains for the 1973-74 season. But the enjoyable quality of athletics is as one individual ends his career there always seems to be some one waiting to take his place and to try and achieve new goals and set new records. xi Some action during the tlonferenrze Tournament-Hayfield took 2nd place A Squad Randy Hagan Dave Dvorak Rod Kester Paul Thee Don Cilbertson Wade Kesler Larry Klocke Ross Clayton Mark Bauman Doyle Peterson Russ Wildeman Ieff Peterson Greg Cerhart leff Thoe Coach Erickson 38 .4 1 Rod and Wade Kester were both champions at the Caledonia Invitational and the Conference Meet C Squad M W 1 25 A Agri' 1,943 i 15 f -I11d1v1dua1 Varslty Statlstlcs- I AB R H RBI K's BB AVE. The Hayfield boy's track team was led by co-captains Dave Fredrickson and Kim Swanson. The thinclads placed fourth in the Conference and were runner-up in the District. One of the highlights of the season was Kim and Dave's entry into the State Track Meet held at St. Cloud. Kim set a new Region I record in the discus and Dave tied the Region record in the high hur- dles. Dave also set a new school record of 15.3 seconds in the high hurdles. Hayfield had its first State Champion in track when Kim Swanson won the discus event in the State Meet. His toss of 155' 8 also set a new Class B record. Most of the class left from there to get on the bus at 4:00 am Thursday morning. The first two hours of the bus ride were unusually silent for the Class of 574. A breakfast stop was made at 6:00 am in the Cities at a Country Kitchen, where it was discovered that Sarah Espe had been left behind. A car was sent back as far as Faribault to pick up the only class member that had overslept. The Senior Class then proceeded to Madden's in the worst weather possible ....... heavy showers and cold. The buses arrived at the resort at approximately 10:30. Eighty tired and bus-bored students and their chaperones filed off the buses to find they couldn't get into the rooms and cabins until 1:00. After eating lunch many went swimming in the luxurious indoor pool, some went canoeing, a few attempted to go kayaking on the rough and freezing cold lake. Others enjoyed the sun lamps and sauna. That night the class danced to Silver from 8:30 till 12:00, after which pizza was served. The band was terrific and everyone had a good time. Friday morning arrived with more rain showers t-hat lasted the remainder of the day. Due to the rotten weather, the activities were somewhat limited, nevertheless the Seniors still had a very memorable class trip. The departure time was set for 1:30. The group stopped in the Cities at a McDonalds for supper. The buses pulled into Hayfield at 8:00 pm and then to make the trip complete some of the seniors went to the Terp in Austin and some went to a party held at Gene Tapp's house. N 4:00 is extremely early in the morning-even earlier when you haven't gotten any sleep K May 9th 8: 10th seemed more like March 9th 8: 10th-the weather was cold and rainy 4. 55 r L gl ff 'fa..Xf:4f55gge,ffZg.F - a '1 f 5 Y 6 Mx N 1 8 NSA 1 I K N xx Q Si gXX,MR'F QSM Sj, N 5 :X , ' D , , 5 F ' Q f -xx.-was-F1 'ik 'XB 5 iijzgf Qf1-4 - L'-A S Class of 1974 H 57 COMMENCEMENT EXERCISES HAYFIELD HIGH CHOOL CLASS OF 1974 t Thursday, May 23, 1974 ' High School Auditorium - 3:00 p. m.
