GIRLS' BASKETBALL SQUAD After many years, a girls' basketball team was again organized in Hayfield. As the game was new to the girls, they had a little trouble get- ting organized. The squad was made up of four seniors, one junior, and one fresh- man as the regulars. They were: Mary Ann Wellik, Eleanor jakoubek, Mildred Busch, Winona Schnebly, Sheryl Hutson, and Esther Nedved. Ardith Hanson, Glennis Hutson, and Imogene Weiland were the first subs. The most thrilling game of the season was at Goodell when our girls led throughout the fir st half, but were unable to stop the tall pivot player in the last half, and lost the game 25-30. BOYS' BASKETBALL SQUAD The 1947-48 basketball season opened November 11 with' the Hayfield team traveling to Crystal Lake to meet defeat. Four lettermen returned to the squad: Formanek, Blank, Rayhons, and Nedved. We played eighteen games during the season, winning seven, losing twelve. The highlight of the season came when the Hornets went on a winning rampage to win five straight. The Hornets took their second win of the season from Wesley, and went on to beat Goodell, Woden, Goodell, and Garner FFA. All of the five are juniors, and the Hornets have high hopes of a better season in '48 and '49.
