FIFTH AND SIXTH NEWS On September 4, 1947, twenty-one boys and girls enrolled in our room ready to begin our school work for another nine months. Of this number, eight were in the fifth grade and thirteen in the sixth. On january 26, Marvin Perkins transferred to the fifth grade from Crystal Lake. February 20, we were sorry to lose a member from this grade, as Evelyn Streyle moved to a farm southeast of Garner. Francis Hejna enrolled in the fifth A grade in March. The fifth grade weren't the only ones to gain new pupils for on March 3, Beverly Sanquist enrolled in the sixth grade. One of the highlights of the school year was a field trip to see the famous Grotto at West Bend. Several of the boys from grade six played on the Junior High Basket- ball team when they played a game with Woden. Our art work this year has included free hand drawing, chalk drawing, free hand cutting, making of Christmas gifts, and clay modeling. Along with our regular work there must always be some play, so several parties and treat days were held on the various holidays and birthdays. We have enjoyed our new textbooks in history, georraphy, and arithmetic this year. THIRD AND FOURTH GRADES The third and fourth grades have undertaken several projects this year. Their first activity was making ice cream in connection with a story in their reading class. Several members of the class brought ice cubes and others brought the ingredients with which to make the ice cream. The second project was the making of vegetable soup following a health lesson in which various vegetables had been studied. Every kind of vegetable imaginable was put in the soup and it was delicious. A third project was making pinholders for the mothers for Christmas. The boys and girls brought old felt hats for material and embroidered them with different colored yarn. Shortly after Christmas the class made a batch of fudge which turned out very good indeed. The class had not entirely completed a library corner when the annual went to press but they soon expect to get a second coat of paint on their two tables and hope for sorne new books before the year is over.
