CLASS PR OPHECY As I stepped out on No. 18 with aethumb protruded, I waved a passing car. The car whizzed on, leaving me standing with a determined look upon my brow, my pack on my back, comics in my shoes, and a penny for luck. I was a failure in the social world, but I was a mere twenty-five, with years to make my fortune. Isn't that the same car coming back? That's strange. I seem to know that face.' Yes, it was Wellik, with her red jet convertible, screaming, Hi ya Buschllu She was accompanied by her six French Poodles, Thanatopsis, Ovaltine, Hick, Alfrado, Cleopatra, and Herbert. She informed me she was now Mrs. Archibald Dale Van Golbuff, Mary Ann being married three times, fto Dalej. Dale had a soft job caring for the maid, while Mary Ann managed al large business corporation on Wall Street. She had done very well for herself, and Dale. Mary Ann gave me one last giggle and then went whizzing off. I hitched a ride, and soon came to Reno. I was looking for something interesting to do, so I went to the library, as I just adore books. I'was fully absorbed in The Three Bears , when I observed the librarian tripping lightly fover a desk, across the hall toward me. The face was familiar but the hair do and black stockings and glasses were not. The voice was that of another classmate, Elaine. Her merry laugh' was gone. After six husbands, men were utterly the last word with Elaine. She told me she lived extrava- gantly on her alimony. Elaine informed me of a circus coming to town. I love a circus, and as Elaine admired the sword swallower, we went to the Heller Brothers Circus. We went in to see the famed fat lady, and who should we find as the fat lady but Sheryl, who had given her- self the stage name of Gayle johnson. She eats candy canes and all the fattening food, but is always disappointed, as she is still thin. She told us she had a lot of Stuff to do in the show. How she ever got that job is a mystery to all who know her in real life. Sheryl toddles out on the stage daily, and almost laughes herself hoarse trying to make her stomach jump up and down. ' After seeing all the sights of Reno, including Sheryl, I bade farewell to my friends of old Hayfield High , and continued my journey to Hollywood. I climbed to higher level and hailed a plane from Gerlach's Supersonic Air Service . In a few seconds I reached my destination and wandered around in a haze admiring the old-fashioned lucite houses with their extremely large bay windows. I bought a newspaper, The Daily Blow from a newspaper boy, and in large headlines I read that Madame Fifi Eleanora, a Parisian model, was appearing at the Slick Chick Style Show. I was determined to attend the affair of astonished women. A I inquired from a pedestrian as to the location of the Slick Chick Style Shop. I found my way to the heavenly looking joint, and got in on my snappy appearance. I was astounded at the appearance of an old friend on the stage. She gave me a greeting with a shriek and a Why Buschy, ya old son-of-a- gun . Well, l nearly fell over. It was Eleanor I!! We chatted on as she had her wrinkles rnassaged. The odor of cheap perfume set me dizzy. But I was quickly revived by smelling salts, and bade my friend Eleanor farewell. I began my return trip to Hayfield. ' Irreturned home, and was much pleased at seeing old friends and classmates. My Travels continued, and my shoes grew thinner. What a wonderful lazy life. CLASS HISTORY Cn August 31, a group of 17 offspring entered the Hayfield School building to begin their twelve years of study. Among these were Elaine Fric and Eleanor jakoubek. Mary Ann Wellik brought her pencils and crayons to join the class a little later on in the year. Our patient teacher, Miss Mabel Earp, helped us in our adjustment to this new life. Our second year took away and added new class members. With these was Mildred Busch. We all dreaded to leave our beloved teacher, but we soon got used to our third grade room and teacher, and the different atmosphere. We trudged on through more years of fun and experience, and of course the inevitable. W01'k!! We all have II1eII10I-'ies of those years. ' Sheryl drifted in from a rural school, and continued earning her diploma from the sixth grade on. Then came the time of graduation from the eighth grade. Every girl had a new dress and a bright locket or some remembrance. There was larger class, with a few boys. Each of the thirteen got a red diploma,.and a shaky feeling inside. Our Freshman year was a meek year for a group of green brilliants. We knew all there was to know, but a few days in High School told us a little different. Our High School years have been great. We've been able to enjoy every year of it, and only wished we could live parts of those past years over again. , We want to thank our teachers, parents, and community for giving us an edu- cation, and helping us through the critical times of our' lives. Soon we'll be out in the great world to gather knowledge without our books and teachers. We are sure we will do justice to our school and our learning. CLASS WILL We, the members of the Senior Class, bequeath our most prized poss- essions to the following: Mary Ann's gift of gab to Bobby johnson. Sheryl's height and slimness to Charlotte. Gertrude may take over Busch's ability to argue. F1-ic's teeth to chew nails to Ardith. jakoubek's ability to steal the hearts of men to Wanita. JUNIOR CLASS HISTORY On September 4, 194-7, two girls and seven boys chose desks in the junior section. Everyone was eager to learn, whether it might be mischiev- ous pranks or lessons. Election of class officers took place. They were elected as follows: Herbert Heller, President: Sylvester Blank, Vice-President: Winona Schnebly, Secretary and Treasurer. Two of the junior boys did not go out for basketball, but the re- maining were the first five on the first team. When girls basketball started, both junior girls participated. We are proud of those on the two teams. Winona and Ardith were active in the Soprano section of the girls Glee Club. All junior boys were members of the fall and spring baseball team. They did very well, with Dale and Virgil as the battery. W Winona was elected one of the cheerleaders. SOPHOMORE CLASS HISTORY On September 4, 1947, twelve eager Sophomores set out to write a new chapter in their book of life. The boys and girls were equal in number. Mrs. Bock was appointed our class sponsor, and in a short period of time, we elected class officers. They are as follows: Clarence Stupka, Presidentg Dean Geddes, Vice-Presidentg Frances Kiefer, Sec- retary and TreasurergDon Mallow, ReP01'feA1'- Eugene Horecka and Glennis Hutson were elected Student Council members from our class. FRESHNIAN CLASS NEWS On September 4-, 1947, ten freshmen entered the high school assembly. It seemed to us it was quite a little running around in the hall, but we did get used to it. Our class consisted of five girls and five boys until the first of February when joan and Alice Perkins joined us. One week after school started we elected our class officers, Mr. Stice as our sponsorg Bernard Heller, Presidents Anton Trca, Vice-Pres- identg Gertrude jakoubek, Secretary and Treasurer. After having eight days of Christmas vacation we came back to school worrying very little about our semester exams. On February 14- we sent clothing to the European Relief Association. We hope they received it, and were all pleased. SEVENTH AND EIGHTH NEWS Twenty six boys and girls enrolled in the junior High School last September. There were thirteen in the seventh and thirteen in the eighth grade. At the beginning of the second semester Colleen Smith enrolled in the seventh grade. Marie Streyle left us in February. Donavon Sanquist entered the eighth grade in March. We have worked hard, but have also had some fun during our school year. On October Z9 we had a Halloween party at the school house. The Teachers and the student council members were our guests. November first is a day that we will all remember, for on that day the members-of our room and Miss Goll's room went to West Bend to see the grotto. ' The eighth grade dramatized the Courtship of Miles Standish at our Thanksgiving program. The junior Choir, under the direction of Miss Baker, helped present the pageant The Nativity at our Christmas program. We have enjoyed having Miss Baker as our music teacher. Monday evening, December Z2 was enjoyed by all, for that was the evening of our caroling party. Miss Baker led us in the singing of carols to the shut-ins about town. After singing at many places, we returned to the school house and played games and had lunch. We also had a Christmas party and Valentine party in -our room. The junior High basketball team played the Woden junior High team on February 2, but were defeated. 7th 84 8th 5th 81 6th Identification-Fifth and Sixth QFirst row-L. to RJ Dennis Jakoubek, Roger Schnebly, Bobby Tschirki, Gary Golbuff, Ronald Brozik, Dean Weiland. Of this number, eight were in the fifth grade and thirteen in the sixth. On january 26, Marvin Perkins transferred to the fifth grade from Crystal Lake. February 20, we were sorry to lose a member from this grade, as Evelyn Streyle moved to a farm southeast of Garner. Francis Hejna enrolled in the fifth A grade in March. The fifth grade weren't the only ones to gain new pupils for on March 3, Beverly Sanquist enrolled in the sixth grade. One of the highlights of the school year was a field trip to see the famous Grotto at West Bend. Several of the boys from grade six played on the Junior High Basket- ball team when they played a game with Woden. Our art work this year has included free hand drawing, chalk drawing, free hand cutting, making of Christmas gifts, and clay modeling. Along with our regular work there must always be some play, so several parties and treat days were held on the various holidays and birthdays. We have enjoyed our new textbooks in history, georraphy, and arithmetic this year. THIRD AND FOURTH GRADES The third and fourth grades have undertaken several projects this year. Their first activity was making ice cream in connection with a story in their reading class. Several members of the class brought ice cubes and others brought the ingredients with which to make the ice cream. The second project was the making of vegetable soup following a health lesson in which various vegetables had been studied. Every kind of vegetable imaginable was put in the soup and it was delicious. A third project was making pinholders for the mothers for Christmas. The boys and girls brought old felt hats for material and embroidered them with different colored yarn. Shortly after Christmas the class made a batch of fudge which turned out very good indeed. The class had not entirely completed a library corner when the annual went to press but they soon expect to get a second coat of paint on their two tables and hope for sorne new books before the year is over. Jerry Perkins was the only new student enrolling during the school year. Hecarne from Crystal Lake. The different holidays were observed by us in their order. Appro- priate room decorations were made for each and parties were enjoyed. Christmas gifts were exchanged. The seasons were also studied and dec- orations used in keeping with them. We each had a part in the Thanksgiving and Christmas programs which were presented to the public. Many birthdays were observed with parties and treats during the school year. Birthdays are real red-letter days in our lives. The dental card campaign was our big project in health this year. We worked for 10073 return of cards. GIRLS' BASKETBALL SQUAD After many years, a girls' basketball team was again organized in Hayfield. As the game was new to the girls, they had a little trouble get- ting organized. The squad was made up of four seniors, one junior, and one fresh- man as the regulars. They were: Mary Ann Wellik, Eleanor jakoubek, Mildred Busch, Winona Schnebly, Sheryl Hutson, and Esther Nedved. Ardith Hanson, Glennis Hutson, and Imogene Weiland were the first subs. The most thrilling game of the season was at Goodell when our girls led throughout the fir st half, but were unable to stop the tall pivot player in the last half, and lost the game 25-30. The highlight of the season came when the Hornets went on a winning rampage to win five straight. The Hornets took their second win of the season from Wesley, and went on to beat Goodell, Woden, Goodell, and Garner FFA. In the second game of the evening the Hayfield boys trounced the Woden boys 40-28. The main attraction of the evening took place during the half time of the boys game, when Dale Golbuff and Mildred Busch were crowned king and queen for the 194-7-48 season.
