Vicky sulkily lbeyed. At the Perry home she overheard a bit of gossip: The professor has been offered a deanship ------- if he can get a wife. His friend John and famlly rally around to help. John offers his secretary a curly headed minx who can't spell, as an ideal wife. Grandma's can- didate is Tootsie Bean, a bit plump, but a master hand with a lemon chiffon pie. Vicky, longing for revenge, proposes a friend Valerie, a southern charmer, who makes a fool out of every man she meetsg Grandpa won't tell the name of his candidate. Convulsing scenes follow. Grandpa makes each of the girls think that the professor has pro- posed an elopoment and they all appear ready for a dash to matrimony. To save the situation, John dresses as a woman and comes weeping in trailing three children after him and passing himself off as the prof- essor's long lost wife. The three girls console themselves elsewhere. In a whirlwind finish Grandpa's candidate winsg the professor finds a wife in the little spitrlre, Vicky. Those who took part in the play were: Dale McNutt, Mary Ann McKillip, Phyllis Laird, Omer Rucker, Carl Schuman, Byrdine Laird, Don McGill1vary, Sheila Counce, Merle Seed and Shirley Counce. Mrs. Dixon directed the play and helped make it a success. The interludes were filled by music before the play by the senior girls, a dialogue be- tween the first and second acts by Jack O'Brien and Junior Wach, a farewell speech between the second and third acts by Bob McKillip, the Class President. 10 Hcus CLASS WILL We, the Senior Class of 1944, of Hayes County High School, Hayes Center, Nebraskag being of sound and disposing mind, and not acting under influence of any persons, living or dead, do establish this as our Last Will and Testament, upon leaving High School, in the following manner that is to say, Whereas, to witg I, Omer Rucker will my slenderness to Leonard Nelms, if he'll take it. l, Bob Huntwork will my manner of reciting poems quietly to Lyle Glee. ENV WM HCHS CLASS HISTORY On a certain September day in 1940, twenty-nine freshmen stepped happily on the bottom round of the ladder which leads ever upward to the all-inspiring climax--Graduation. During the first year after sur viving the usual tortures of Initiation, we took part in many extracur ricular activities. We also had a peculiarity in our many namesakes, Shirley Thompson, Shirley Mosely, and Shirley Gounce among the girls, and among the boys--Robert McKillip, RODBTt Ward, Robert Hgntwork, and Robert Orman. Our candidate for Carnival Queen was Beryle Beebe. One boy took active part in football, while five took their places on the basketball squad. We had four girls in Pep Club. Shirley Gounce re- presented our school in the Dramatic Reading Section at the Contest in Culbertson, and she and Sheila Gounce were in the one-act play UH1s First Girln which rated nhxcellentn in the same Contest. Several par- ticipated in uramatics and instrumental music. Bettie Beazley was our Class President and Miss Hazel Morgan, our Class Sponsor. During our second year our class enrollment was decreased by the loss of four members, but our pride and intelligence was increased greatly. Patty Mead rated nGoodH in the annual Declamatory Contest in Culbertson. We had six boys in Glee Club, six members in Chorus, ten girls in Pep Club, seven members of the class in Band, four boys out for basketball and two boys who took active part in football. We also had a large number in the Dramatics Club. Byrdine Laird was our can- didate for Carnival Queen. Carl Schuman was our Class President. Mr. Fisher was Sponsor until he joined the Air Corps in January and Miss TeSelle then became our Sponsor. The biggest event for us in the following year was the Annual Junior-senior Banquet. A circus theme was very successfully carried out. We started the year with an enrollment of twenty-six. Six boys were in Athletics and a large group participated in vocal and instru- mental masic. We presented a hilarious comedy nHis Ozark Cousinn as the Annual Class Play. As Juniors we received our rings and were well satisfied with our choice. Thirteen members of the class were entered in dramatlcs. Three of the girls---Shirley Counce, Sheila Counce, and Bettie Beezley were in the All School Play nGhost Town.n Omer Rucker was our President. We have now emerged from the cocoon stage, to that of the full- fledged butterfly. we are in possession of certain inalienable rights which are ours as seniors. A new record has been set, as our pictures were received about Thanksgiving time which was unusually early. This year when the football season rolled around, the senior boys did their dest for Hayes County High, they also did their share in basketball. A good many of the seniors took part in vocal and instrumental music, and five members of the class--Junior Nach, Bettie Beezley, Mary Ann McKillip, Byrdine Laird, and Sheila Gounce were in the All School Play nYoung Doctor Young.n Our Senior Play, nProfessor, How Could Youln was appreciated by our large audience. With Robert McKillip as Presi- dent and Mr. Bartell as sponsor, we feel that though the class of 1944 is graduated, they will be long remembered for their outstanding char- acteristics and they in turn will remember and be grateful for, the many opportunities offered them by their beloved Hayes County High. 12 HCHS ff CLASS PROPHECY New York City February, 1954 Dear Mr. Bartell, Since you were our class sponsor, I can imagine you would like to know how all of the members are now. In the first place Robert Huntwork is the owner of a garage in Hayes Center. He says that business is good. Speaking of H.C., there is a new hospital being built through the efforts of Shirley Mosley whose vast fortune has made her very popular. I presume that you have heard Jack O'Brlen's comedy program on the radio Friday nights. Carl Schuman and his swing band also come on Friday night but his vocalist is what I like. Mary Ann McKillip really has a wonderful voice. Speaking of fame, Beryle Beebe has made good in Hollywood. She is now starring in the current picture NA NIGHT IN EDINBURG.u Only two of the class became teachers. Arlyiss Housman liked it so well, she eventually became a child psychologist. Phyllis Laird is teaching in a college in Chicago, but I think she is more interested in a sailor out there. The cousins did well as Shirley Counce is a scientist noted for her research in new plastics. Sheila Counce, after working in a hospital for some time, married a doctor and they live in Vermont, Merle Seed is the only farmer and to date is unmarried but you know the country is still full of single girls. Junior Each owns the title of the DEVIL WHO DEFIES DEATH with Lynch's Dare-Devil-Death- Drivers. Darlene McLeland is the one that surprgsed me. She is on a world cruise and is in Russia at the present time. Robert McKillip makes a good warden at the State Pen and is the idol of the prisoners there You remember Jeane Ward, the girl with the black hair? She is a beauty operator in Los Angeles. She has a very nice office. But you could never guess about Omer Rucker! He owns a dude ranch in Nevada. If you want to know of a good place to vacation, I advise you to go there, as it is quite a place. A couple of them are making home-making their career. Bettie Beezley lives with her husband in Hawaii, and Shirley Thompson who is also a sailor's wife lives in Cheyenne. Opal Schneider isn't married yet, but I hear she is contemplating matrimony with one of the roomers at her boarding house. Byrdine Laird has achieved her ambition as an air-line stewardess. She is engaged to a handsome pilot. Dale McNutt has been very successful. He has a profitable job in Washington D.C. He is very modest about it, however, he is also a good friend of the President. Donald McGill1vary is at home among the natives of Borneo as he is a missionary there and Hardy Reese is the minigter of his home town, good old Hayes Center. People shouldn't talk about themselves but I guess you are inter- ested in me, too. I have become an authoress. I'm not saying how famous, but I am preparing for a trip in the South for material for my new novel. There you have it, the where-abouts and information of the grad- uating class of 1944. I'm sure every one is proud of them for we always were a good class. The class has only four boys, but they are athletic. Duane Reese, Lyle Glee, and Edward Schmeller went out for football and now they and Charles Stiles help make up our oasketball team. Thirteen participate in singing groups and six members are re- presented in band. The class play nMama's baby B0y,n a comedy, was presented both in afternoon and evening performances.
