Ins+rumen'ral Class Due to the fact that most of the Band and Orchestra graduated in the class of 1940, Miss Morgan and Mr. Evans found themselves with a very serious lack of players at the beginning of this year. However a call was put out for beginners and students responded readily. At the end of the first semester a band of 18 pieces was organized. In this group were 6 cornets, 3 clarinets, 2 baritone horns, 2 trombones, 2 alto saxo- phones, bass horn, snare drum, and bass drum. Three individuals, starting late in the semester, on cornet, saxophone, and clarinet were not ready to play with the larger group and continued their individual practices. The band made its first public appearance at the Hamlet basketball game, February 6. Nine individuals got the benefit of class instruction in violin, given by Miss Morgan. Orchestra was not organized during this year because of the inexperience of all the players but will be among the music activities next year. -10-

Chorus Chorus started the year with some 55 members. This group gave a short Christmas cantata on the afternoon of December 20. At the beginning of the second semester this group was cut to 42 members due to contest regulations. This made the group much easiel' to handle and made it possible to use a smaller room for rehearsal. X From this group, a double mixed quartet was picked, which was 'made up as follows: Sopranos-Marjorie Leffler and Bonnie Leffler, Altos-Fay Gangwish and Jane Adair, Tenors-Maurice Schuman and La Vern Schneider, Basses- Curtis Leffler and Darwin Yonkers. This group will participate in the music festival of the Frenchman Valley and also will enter the district music contest at McCook. This group has received instruction from both Miss Morgan and Mr. Evans. Miss Morgan is pianist for the group and Mr. Evans is the director. -9-

Boys' Glee Club Boys' Glee Club has become a permanent organization in the music depart- ment of the Hayes County High School. In this club, all boys that have any musi- cal ability what-so-ever are given a chance to develop their Voices and to learn to read notes. This year the group is slightly out of balance, due to the over abund- ance of second tenors. From this group, Mr. Evans picked a boys' quartet. Curtis Leffler, Darwin Yonkers, La Vern Schneider, and Maurice Schuman sing in it. Both the Glee Club and the Quartet will sing at the Frenchman Valley music festival and at the district contest at McCook. Darwin Yonkers will represent the boys as Baritone Soloist at the contest. Wilma Mintling is pianist for the group and Mr. Evans is the director. -1 1..
