Ninth graders are required to take Algebra, English, General Science, with Home Economics for the girls and Manual Training for the boys. In the tenth grade pupils have carried four subjects which were required. They are Geometry, English, Biology, and World History. Juniors, this year, were able to take their pick of the following subjects: Agriculture and Geography of Nebr., American History,.Newswriting, Oral Eng- lish, Normal Training Subjects, Chemistry, Latin I, and Aeronautics. Due to the fact that Normal Training students must take required work they were not able to avail themselves of all the electives. I Senior subjects ran in the same fields as did the Juniors'. However Rural So- ciology and Economics, American Government, Consumer Education, Professional Training, and Typing were added to the list. FacuH'y SUPERINTENDENT H. However, at the end of the first semester, they picked up two more members, mak- ing the total enrollment nineteen. Six of the members of the class registered for Normal Training while the remainder of the class took the regular course. Members of this class took active part in most of the extra-curricular pro- gram of the school: four in football, six in basketball, three in dramatics, three in pep club, and a large percentage of the class in vocal and instrumental music. The Juniors presented the mystery-comedy Phantom Bells as their class play. ...g- Sophomores CLASS OFFICERS Reed Loomis ,,,7,,, ,,,.,,....,,,,, ...... ,Y,Y,,,,,7, P r e sident Wanda Mintling ,,,,, ,.,,,, V ice President Leona Wittwer .....,L,L,.., ,,,,.A,. They have a total of thirty-five members. Many members of this class are active in extra curricular activities: five in football, eight in basketball, three in pep club, fourteen in dramatics, and a large number in instrumental and vocal music. Several members of this class have appeared in one-act plays given by the dramatics club during the year. Five are taking part in the local dramatics contest. -7.. V ice President Shirley Counce , ,,,,,,, ,,,,,,,,,e S ecretary Robert McKillip ,,,e,. Treasurer Hazel Morgan ,, ,,,,,, ,,,,,. S ponsor The Freshman class is the largest class, with the exception of the tenth grade, in the school this year. This class has an enrollment of twenty-nine. One boy took active part in football and five took part in basketball. Four of the girls belonged to the pep club. Six members of the class took part in dra- matics and a good number in vocal and instrumental music. The Freshmen were entertained at an initiation party early in the year. They spent one day dressed rather funnily with elaborate make-up. This day was cli- maxed by the initiation party. ..g.. Chorus Chorus started the year with some 55 members. This group gave a short Christmas cantata on the afternoon of December 20. At the beginning of the second semester this group was cut to 42 members due to contest regulations. This made the group much easiel' to handle and made it possible to use a smaller room for rehearsal. X From this group, a double mixed quartet was picked, which was 'made up as follows: Sopranos-Marjorie Leffler and Bonnie Leffler, Altos-Fay Gangwish and Jane Adair, Tenors-Maurice Schuman and La Vern Schneider, Basses- Curtis Leffler and Darwin Yonkers. This group will participate in the music festival of the Frenchman Valley and also will enter the district music contest at McCook. This group has received instruction from both Miss Morgan and Mr. Evans. Miss Morgan is pianist for the group and Mr. Evans is the director. -9- Ins+rumen'ral Class Due to the fact that most of the Band and Orchestra graduated in the class of 1940, Miss Morgan and Mr. Evans found themselves with a very serious lack of players at the beginning of this year. However a call was put out for beginners and students responded readily. At the end of the first semester a band of 18 pieces was organized. In this group were 6 cornets, 3 clarinets, 2 baritone horns, 2 trombones, 2 alto saxo- phones, bass horn, snare drum, and bass drum. Three individuals, starting late in the semester, on cornet, saxophone, and clarinet were not ready to play with the larger group and continued their individual practices. The band made its first public appearance at the Hamlet basketball game, February 6. Nine individuals got the benefit of class instruction in violin, given by Miss Morgan. Orchestra was not organized during this year because of the inexperience of all the players but will be among the music activities next year. -10- Boys' Glee Club Boys' Glee Club has become a permanent organization in the music depart- ment of the Hayes County High School. In this club, all boys that have any musi- cal ability what-so-ever are given a chance to develop their Voices and to learn to read notes. This year the group is slightly out of balance, due to the over abund- ance of second tenors. From this group, Mr. Evans picked a boys' quartet. Curtis Leffler, Darwin Yonkers, La Vern Schneider, and Maurice Schuman sing in it. Both the Glee Club and the Quartet will sing at the Frenchman Valley music festival and at the district contest at McCook. Darwin Yonkers will represent the boys as Baritone Soloist at the contest. Wilma Mintling is pianist for the group and Mr. Evans is the director. -1 1.. Girls' Glee Club 1 The Girls' Glee Club was organized in a new way this year. The entire group of girls, who wished to sing, was divided into a regular and a junior glee club. The junior group is made up to a large extent of sophomores and freshmen. The regular club has twenty-two members, juniors, seniors, and sophomores. A sextette--Bonnie Leffler, Marjorie Leffler, Thelma Kotschwar, Lorraine Orman, jane Adair, and Fay Gangwish-has been picked by Miss Morgan. Bonnie Leffler will represent the group as soprano soloist. Both groups and the soloist will appear at the district music contest at Mc- Cook. The sextette and the soloist will appear at the Frenchman Valley Music Festival. Miss Morgan has taken direct leadership of this group, however, Mr. Evans has helped with the directing of the regular glee club. ...121 Lucie? jeofmote Our Phofographer Norfh PlaHe Nebraska C Q46 QW QM maze, Jace Foofball Last fall, the Hayes County High School Cardinals started the season with a new coach, lots of fighting spirit, and the will to win, although lack of weight was a serious handicap. Although the year was rather unsuccessful from the standpoint of winning games, it was a grand success from the standpoint of sportsmanship, fighting spirit in the face of overwhelming odds, and the ability on the part of the boys to never give up, no matter how far the other team was ahead of them. Darwin Yonkers was selected conference center for his second year in the Frenchman Valley Six-man football league. Maurice Schuman, Otho Stone, Bill Beezley, and Frank Counce were given honorable mention by the same group. Darwin was elected Honorary Captain by the boys. Junior Wach served as student manager during the season. ....14- Baske+baH The Hayes County High School boys, with a combination of good passing and poor basket shooting succeeded in winning three of the season's games. The ninth and tenth grade boys were successful in their attempt to defeat the Hamlet boys and keep the trophy from now on. However, the upper class boys were not so fortunate and their trophy went to Hamlet for the first time since the starting of the Hayes County championship playoff. The boys were eliminated from both the Frenchman Valley tournament and the Class BU tournament in the first round of play. BasebaH Due to the fact that most of the schools in the valley are planning on play- ing baseball again this spring, We plan to have baseball for our spring sport rather than track. -15- Pep Club Pep Club, this year, had a membership freshmen, three sophomores, three juniors, and of which we are justly proud, includes: Sheila lyn Havens, Vyona Christner, Shirley Counce Lillian Rice, Arletta Wittwer, Evelyn McKillip 9 of eighteen which included four eight seniors. This classy group Counce, Lucille McDowell, Mari- Phyllis Laird, Shirley Thompson, Marjorie Leffler, Wilma Richards, Bonnie Leffler, Mary Leah Jones, Mildred Carter, Nadyne Roe, Jane Adair, and Lorraine Orman. Marjorie and Bonnie Leffler were very successful as yell leaders this year. Mildred Carter was drill captain. Sheila Counce was treasurer. Drills were presented during the year on the home floor, climaxed by the appearance of this club in the contest held at the Frenchman Valley B. B. Tourna- ment. The girls raised money during the year through the sale of candy and gum at home games and through the sale of Hayes County stickers. Miss Anderson is sponsor of this group. -16- Times-Republican I-I. B. The number of points for each activity is on a graduated scale, depending upon the amount of time and the emphasis given to the activity. When the student has accumulated 100 points he is awarded a cer- tificate which entitles him to wear the letter H on sweaters. This year all boys who had played a definite number of quarters of first team games in football and basketball were given a chenille letter NH . The pres- entation was made by Coach Kerns at the annual entertainment of the boys by the pep club girls. After a boy has succeeded in winning one letter he will thereafter be awarded certificates or chevrons for each sport. il K ...N ..,, ., , -K , ,-,, I in :.' ' ' l W QQ if-'P Hi , 3 - Y .
