Dramafics Lovers of Dramatic Art were given the opportunity to develop their talent in various ways throughout the school year. On Novem- ber 23rd an all-school cast presented two one-act plays for the benefit of the Activity Fund. Coaches were Iris M. Timson and C. W. Westley. On February 16, the Junior Class gave a clever perform- ance of The Man In The Green Shir! coached by Myrtle I. Ander- son. The Senior play Skeet Goes Eastv was given April 20th under the direction of C. W. Westley. In the declamatory contest there were thirteen contestants, who showed real talent and good training under Iris M. Timson. Three from the local contest were selected to represent the school in the sectional contest at Culbertson. Harry Schaffert was rated Good,' in interpretative oratory, Ruth Miller received an Excellent in the humorous division and Dorothy Gould a Superior in the dramatic division. From there Dorothy went to Cambridge to the district contest. She received a Superior in the district which made her eligible to represent Southwest Nebraska in the State Contest, which was held at Holdrege, March 25. Here she received a Good rating. Track The Hayes County tracksters were greatly benefited by the new extension built onto the track field. Although our team didn't show up so well at the first of the season, they worked hard and developed into fine track and field men in the closing part of the season. Our outstanding athletes in this sport are Wayne Gage, Edward Wilson, Vernon Rucker, Melvin Steckel, and Stanley Wilson. The juniors won the interclass track meet and the Seniors followed in second place. Some of the boys earned Full-Blue numerals and sev- eral Half-Blue numerals which are awarded by the athletic department of the University of Nebraska. Tlsi

Band Our band is growing and progressing each year, but was forced to remain in the background at the time of the Music Contest and Festival because of the absence of necessary instruments to make it a balanced group. Bass and alto horns are needed badly and as yet the school has not found it possible to purchase these. One member of the band, Helen Fichtner, played a trumpet solo at the Music Festival in Stratton. Under the direction of H. Landon Evans the band played for school programs, Pep Club demon- strations, and football games. I -17-
